Life / Tattoos and Popular culture in Poland [51]

It would be a visible connection to my beliefs, to my heritage, to my ancestors

Then people should respect that. Thats a cool thing to do, especially for those (like myself) who treat their heritage as something to be valued and respected. Where are you from?

I didn't know the native Americans use them too?

Don't quote me, im not 100% sure. But I studied the American West and they look similar to those that were used by the Indians at that time, during rituals etc.

Though you're probably right, certainly more Viking etc...

I'm thinkinh of getting a tattoo, but as I was saying before, I think people do get them for the wrong reasons, and i know too many people who have done that in the past becasue they thought it would 'look pretty'.

Though I think with something like runes you get them for a meaning right? theyre a good conversation starter too, for people who are either interested in them, or who don't know what they are...

I'm thinking to get one of these

As it says on the pages, try them out temporarily first. Do you have any other tattoos?

I guess those tattoos represent Celtic or possibly American-Indian (Native American) tribes? Are you polish?

people get tattoed just to have a tattoo and they don't attach any particular meaning to it.

I totally agree. My ex had loads and they were utterly pointless and stupid, he will regret them later.
But i think that if they have a true meaning attached to them then its ok. Having said that i'd never get a partner's name tattooed, you never know whats going to happen ;)

Life / Alcohol problems of Polish people [141]

Zubrowka is great. :)

It is :)

My friend registered with a doctor in england recently and the questionaire he had to fill out asked him how much alcohol he drank a week. He just giggled and circled none. I know he drinks beer as soon as he finishes work (he is a baker, so this is generally 4 in the morning) because he says it helps him " sleep better ". Lol.

To be fair it is only one.

But come the weekend, 1 beer turns into about 1 litre of vodka. And a hangover the next day? You've got to be joking.

But as many of you have said previously, they're no worse than any other country. Lets not be too hard on them ;)

Svastika tattoos are especially liked in Poland.

Haha, my friend jokes that he is a mini-hitler and that he is planning something evil. Its pretty worrying...i can never tell whether he's joking ;) lol.

Genealogy / Polish person's average height? [210]

Im not sure, one of the Polish guys I work with is over 6ft, whereas another is only 5ft 4 (bless him, he is tiny.)
The other two are about 5ft 8, so I imagined it would be like any country, a broad variation in height. British people certainly vary greatly.

The only problem I see with tattoos is----once you mature ,with a family and all the partying is done,it's time to have them removed.

I agree. My polish boyfriend had a tattoo of 'eminem' on his hip when he was 14, and still living with his family in Poland.
He also has a tribal on his arm which looks lovely, and when I asked him if that was the only one he shook his head and started blushing (later if found out about the eminem tattoo). He said he regrets it now, so I guess its not just people who have settled down (he's only 23 now, still loves Eminem haha).

But otherwise, as Arien said, I think its seen as quite fashionable.

Food / Polish polskie pierogi recipe (prepared at home) [72]

Dec 30, 09, 23:32 - Thread attached on merging:
Need a recipe (easy if possible) for PIEROGI! :)

My friend has just been back to Poland for Christmas and brought back some pierogi. I know it has mushroom and sauerkraut in, but how do you make the outside?? is it like pasta or pastry?

They were really tasty and we've eaten them all between three of us so I want to have a go at making some to suprise them ;)

Any recipes would be appreciated...
Thanks

Language / Nice Polish phrases to say to men [76]

ooshak

Love 'bejbasku', pronounced 'beybasku right?
Am getting to grips with the proper pronunciation of characters now, and spending time with three of the guys who all speak to each other in polish is helping-recognise much more, so they cant away with talking about me so much now ;)

'Misiu' is teddy/bear isn't it?
I got called that the other day, and (I dont know how to spell it) something that I think means 'sun'. Soneczku?? Sorry for butchering the spelling... :(

Language / Nice Polish phrases to say to men [76]

Thankyou :)
but everyone's contribution is welcome and MUCH appreciated ;)
To be fair some of these would be funny, he's got a fantastic sense of humour...
Sometimes some of the translations from English-Polish dicitonaries are too literal, so I find that awkward, but so does he when he tries to call me English words (he got confused about 'honey', couldnt understand why I would want to be called something that was sticky and messy ;)

But as I said, everyone's contributions very very helpful :)

Merged: English Girl needing affectionate words to call a Polish boyfriend :)

I'm totally new to this,
but a Polish guy I work with has just asked me out (in a sense, the language barrier is a problem ;P )
He calls me Skarbie and Kochanie
And I just wondered if anyone had any ideas for words to call him? I'm friends with his two flatmates (also polish) and all they tell me are pretty rude words :)

HELP!
