News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

I know something about Brexit.

Primarily that it is a stupid idea , that none of the politicians who supported it are willing or able to implement it, that it is already having severe detrimental effects on the UK economy, that it has made it impossible to pass any laws in the UK due to another chaotic election and a coalition without a clear majority; and I know that the money that it was supposed to save will now not materialise.

I know that these half baked ideas appealed mostly to senile people, bigots and the uneducated.

Dry cleaning is slow and expensive in Poland but getting better. You will pay about 80 zloty for a weeks worth - most shopping malls have a place with convenient hours. I don't know of any Service where they pick it up from your apartment.

Work / Confused ... 1 yr London Vs Poland Base hiring [30]

He probably has mortgage, nice car and kids at an expensive school plus skiing and a couple of weeks in France in which case he won't get much change from his 100k but it is not struggling as a Polish person would understand the term

[moved from]

They did not vote en masse for Brexit - it was 52-48 with the 52 made up of the old and the poorly educated. Support for Brexit had fallen very much, the country is ungovernable and the govt is now begging to stay in the single market until they find something better.

In the US too I think people are realising its not a good idea to elect inexperienced fools

Work / Doctor in Poland refuses to give sick leave for day earlier [3]

Wait until you get paid - if it does not include the hours you missed them call your Dzial Kadry about it - they will mostly want a quiet life and probably pay you the extra few zloty. That will save you the time and transport cost to the doctor.

Work / Is Poland's ZUS obligatory for a one man LLC? [13]

I was not aware of that change which was implemented last year. It seems to have closed a loophole whereby you could pay yourself as a director and avoid ZUS. Not sure what country you are from, or if you have the possibility of one other person taking 81% of the shares, but it's best to discuss that with an accountant.

Work / Is Poland's ZUS obligatory for a one man LLC? [13]

I think maybe the terminology you use is confusing. If you mean a limited liability company, sp z o.o, then this does not need to make any ZUS contributions. If you pay yourself as an employee then you would need to pay ZUS at circa 19 percent.

If you are not talking about a limited company, but rather a sole trader, dzialalnosc gospodarstwo - then you need to pay the flat rates of ZUS described above.

Welcome back Polonius :) hope you are well !

Iwno is a small village but was the seat of the aristocratic Mielzynski family - in fact I think they are in discussions to get some of the property back.

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [214]

So when you say "we" does that mean you are active in one of these idiotic Dads Army operations ?

Their anti semitism is not just "one unfortunate thing" - it is a very important part of their ideology.

But from what I have seen most of these morons are more interested in casual violence, cheap amphetamines and souped up cars than in real politics so they are mostly harmless and comical.

News / Poland on course to end European winter/summer time [19]

Finland, the Baltics, Romania, Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus are all in the EU and would all be on the same time zone if we changed, it's a matter of geography not politics - I'm in favor as I hate those dark mornings taking the kids to school. As it stands Poland is not in its natural time zone (edit having looked at a map it probably is, but at the edge of it and I still hate getting up in the dark)

I didn't know Moscow has changed its time zone in 2014 - thought it was still two hours ahead so I learn something every day !

News / Polish-German Reconcilliation Seminar [491]

So the 1000 lawyers think the repararions should be one trillion - but you are willing to settle for 1 percent of that amount ? Your 10 bilion comes to about 250 euros a head. Still I should be able to get a new fridge with that as i saw a whirlpool today for 899 zloty so i am nów converted to this brillant idea.

Do you honestly think the Poles rebuilt their economy in their own, with no outside help ? Compare it to Serbia or Ukraine, both outside the EU - I doubt you have visited either of them but you can read up on it. I don't know if you were in Eastern Europe in the 90s but there was plenty of support from Germany, the US and other mature democracies.

All nonsense but there are plenty of separate EU threads.

Each of your clueless statements is easily rebutted.

There is no interest payable on those EU funds

Germany got a 38 million market, Poland got an 80 million market with three times the spending power.

Yes Poland has a cheap labor force - but EU membership has meant that it is now far more skilled than it was in 2004, again the mutual benefits of free trade.

Some of those grants might go to German companies, plenty more goes to Polish businesses. In any case those German own businesses are employing Poles, paying Social Security, paying taxes, supporting the zloty, and most of all significantly modernising the manufacturing capacity of the country.

But we only need to mention one - The opening of German and other EU markets free from all restrictions, to Polish businesses. That is the very basis of Polands current boom and the dramatic rise in living standards that has accompanied it.

News / Polish-German Reconcilliation Seminar [491]

Why against reopening the issue ? Because long term reconciliation is better for peace and prosperity than short term money. Poland is now more prosperous and stable than ever before - not because of PiS or PO but through 28 years of work by its people and governments. The EU and NATO have been a strong part of this transition to a mature democracy and within those bodies Germany always a strong partner. Poland will gain little from replacing the UK as the most awkward member of the EU, in fact it will probably lose its status as the biggest voice of the 2004 countries.

If you live here rather than in Chicago you have more knowledge of how interconnected the economies now are and more at stake if It goes wrong. It would play into the hands of the worst elements of German society.

So none of the 1000 lawyers are looking at Russia because they can't be expected to do much ?

You are poor at maths Dirk - the Greek compensation would be 1.2bn based on your high rate of interest - that is 600x less than the figure you are quoting for Polish compensation. Or even more if you allow for the fact it was in DEM

And Germany might have a fraction of US power when it comes to trade but it is a large fraction - German total exports are 92% of the US level of exports. It is the third biggest trader in the world and it is unlikely that even a nut job like Trump would enter into a trade war or trivial 3rd party reasons.

As for the 1000 lawyers working on this then they can use as a starting point the fact that there are treaties signed by both governments saying the matter is closed - I don't know what the other 999 will do but I'm sure they will be charging a lot of hours and taxi fares if they were anything like typical Warsaw lawyers.

Yes - and based on your logic the Iraqis of 2083 will have an excellent case for reparations against the US, UK, Poles and a few others for this illegal invasion.

We can indeed circle back in a year to check your prediction that US luxury car buyers will be funding German reparations to Poland via a tariff on Porsches. As I remember tariffs was also the idea for collecting the money for the stupid Mexico wall ?

You do realise that when tariffs are imposed the other side normally responds ?

Why on earth is it game over just because the White House is involved ? How are they doing getting the money from the Mexicans to build that wall ? Trump does not trump international law and he is not going to have much luck making German or Russian taxpayers cough up for something their grandparents did 80 years ago.

In any case they obviously have no time to deal with nonsensical disputes on a different continent.

I imagine my grandparents misery is equal to yours - between mine and my wife's we have 2 deportations, 3 burned farms (one German, two Soviet) one dead, two wounded, a house bombed by the Germans etc. i don't want any reparations for that - rather I would like my own kids to live in a world where it does not happen again.

Which is why refighting the battles of 80 years ago is not constructive.

Life / Boring Life after work in Poland (Bydgoszcz) [29]

Perfect storm - start of winter plus splitting up with a girl. Don't worry as I'm sure you will feel more positive in a few weeks.

Strongly suggest you follow up the sports idea, even if it just joining a gym or learning chess like Dirk suggests. and why not take some trips at weekends - Warsaw, Gsansk, Berlin even.

It's a bit weird being an expat here and leaving work at 4pm - lots of companies worktheir expats very hard, but look after them well in terms of housing, schools etc.

So maybe it is better to ask Russia for reparations ? They prevented Marshall Aid and probably caused equal damage as the Germans did. But PiS will not ask them because they know strong leader Putin will give them a humiliating two word answer.

That is not the normal way for governments to behave at all. Imagine if the Germans suddenly said that their 1991 signature on the treaties recognising the finality of the Oder as the border, no longer applied.

I'm no huge fan of Tusk but I don't think it's correct that most people here hate him. I have never heard anybody express strong sentiments about him - and I know quite a lot of normal PIS voters. Yes he has got a limo. Most of the current government here also have limos, and so does The prominent backbench MP who cannot even drive.
