Life / Feedback on Smart Bank / Nest Bank [4]

You will have to make your own judgment about whether it's good or not - it's the newest, smallest and least capitalised Polish bank but it has a rating similar to most of the rest.

Yes it is covered by the NBP insurance scheme - I would not read too much into that because if things go really wrong it's unlikely the Polish state has the money to cover losses. There have been some small banks (more like credit unions) going bust in the last two years and it has not been easy for depositors to recover cash, I think they will get it but I have heard anecdotally that the ones who have emigrated are at the back of the queue.

Work / How to earn interest on Euro Account or Deposits? [5]

That will be difficult - You will need many thousands of Euro to earn anything worthwhile. Only three banks earn more than 0.50 on Euro fixed deposits and they are all Polish owned.

On current accounts just forget it - and work instead to ensure you don't pay any fees. When they say it's a wallet they are talking metaphorically.

Food / Mexican food store in Poland (online) [5]

There is also Arriba-Sklep.pl. they have pretty much the same stuff as Don describes in Kuchnia Swiata plus a small selection of other sauce etc. But you will have to improvise ! Good thing about Poland in summer is lots of good fruit and vegetables and it is tasty so I'm sure you will get to love a polish food too :)

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [214]

Before getting Democrats to work with him, Trump first need to get republicans to agree with him. That's not going to be easy to do, when you have spent the past two years insulting and belittling them. I thought this guy was supposed to be the worlds greatest deal maker?

He was elected, probably fairly, and he has a Republican house and Senate. It is up to him to deliver his agenda and not pass the buck all the time, especially regarding laws that were passed a generation ago.

It is the same with Brexit - now that the idiots that organised it have to deliver on their promises, they are suddenly blaming everyone else for the fact that it is very difficult and everything is still the fault of the EU or Remainers.

If you want to put this back on topic, then I would suggest that recent vote in Austria France, Holland and Germany show that people have now had a wonderful one year live experiment before heir eyes showing what it's like to put idiots in charge. To solve deep problems you need to engage all of society not just 50% and deliberately antagonise the other 50%.

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [214]

I can't think of any government in the developed world more focused on redistribution, and more opposed to liberal economics than PiS. 500 plus is to be followed with a pensioners version, effective tax rates are increasing as deductions are cut off, banks are taxed half of their profits, state owned companies favor employee benefits over shareholder value.

All of that has to be paid for by about 9m taxpayers, which is roughly the 39 percent figure you use :)

Travel / What is the cheapest way to get from Modlin airport to Warsaw? [106]

Was talking about Uber with a friend last night and their price from Modlin on their website is nuts - 61 zloty, but the gas on its own would be 30 zloty, let alone the cost of insurance, car depreciation ZUS. I can only assume that Uber is subsidising Polish drivers to a huge extent - otherwise why do it ?

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

Indeed - there are 11.000 people with hiv in Sweden of which about 6000 are migrants. That 6000 will include some Poles, some Americans and some British by the way.

The total number of migrants in Sweden is 1.2m - so the percentage of migrants with hiv is 0.5.

In Sub Saharan Africa the rate of HIV is now below 5 percent, not the 20 percent.

Blaming refugees for disease is an old tactic of the far right.

You could explain that many times without it being understood. Anyway Dirk is suspended - not sure why but probably something more serious than bragging about the size of his car.

Love / How common or culturally accepted is divorce in Poland? [43]

The rate is about 35 percent - one of the lower in Europe. I disagree with Dom - I think it is roughly as common in villages as it is in towns - partly due to the strains caused by lots of villagers working. Don't have any evidence for that but this just my observation.

I don't think there is any social stigma to being divorced here, most people would not bat an eyelid. There is a stigma to walking out on your kids when they are young however - that tends to be done by people who are not married in the first place.

Post 221. In fact it was 75 percent.

It is not a resort and not elegant.

Anyway as Roger says not worth it - I'm off in the Maluch to see if I can scrape together enough grosze for some flaczki to eat with my ugly wife in my hovel. :)

That is not the same as 40 percent of migrants having HIV - christ only knows what kind of schooling you get there.

The cruise ship cost is less than 50 euro per day per head. Its difficult to eat and drink on that money in Stockholm let alone find a bed. It's p to the Swedish taxpayers if they want to put up with it.

They are nonsense - he cannot seem to read details or do maths. On top of that there is the normal embellishment - a bankrupt business hotel in dreary Halle is somehow a 4 star resort. A mothballed cruise ship dragged out of Brest harbour is a luxury liner etc.

In fact less than 0.5 percent of migrants in Sweden are HIV positive.

The luxury cruise ship was 35 years old and already retired from service.

No hotels have been bought out - the German govt asked for tenders for a temporary solution and this was won by Holiday Inn, a US company.

Where do you get all these lies from ?

Of course you can contribute. It's a free country and a free forum that is generally well managed - though I think that all of these migrations threads should be rolled into one as they spam the site especially once the US based members have woken up and had their six pack of Schlitz.

But we would have a more sensible debate if you did not speak in cliches that come straight from Breitbart or Rush Limbaugh. In real life nobody has ever used in my presence the words virtue signalling, statist, cuck etc. If they did start talking to me like that I would edge gently away from them or take a sudden interest in the sports game on the TV in the corner of the bar !

A few weeks ago there was some other dude here who started asking about his holiday in the Polish lakes, where to buy the best pierogi etc and quite quickly moved on to race wars and the need for Poland to be dominated by Russians.

The members of the European Parliament are elected, including some fairly barmy Polish ones like Korwin Mikke. This is also the only elected office that Nigel Farage has held.

But in any case the refugee deal was not made by MEPs but was agreed by the elected leadership of the 28 member states.

It is strange that several weeks ago you arrived with a fairly innocent questions about finding a job here. Now you seem intent on long illogical generally ill informed rants about migration, cucks, virtue signalling, the perfidy of the EU et cetera et cetera .

Work / Is it difficult to make a living playing Soccer (football) in Poland? [54]

Probably quite low - there is a limited number of professional teams here and outside the top 2 divisions the money is probably less than you would get working minimum wage in the U.K. So you would probably need another job to support yourself.

Have you ever spent any time here ? It's now Thursday and in the week so far I cannot remember a single discussion with a Pole about migration - and I spend a lot of time in talking about business, the economy or politics. More prosaic discussions with friends or in bars are about the doctors strike, Lewandowsk, Kaczynski returning, the price of butter or what's in the Lidl ulotka this week.

Immigration is much further down the agenda than you think.

Yes you can say that. Like John Godson or Olisadebe.

You could say it even more if you were born in Poland, educated here, bought up your kids here and paid tax here. Just like Sadiq Khan does in Britain.

At some point one of your Portuguese ancestors became American

Fortunately The British parliament gets to decide who is British - not Americans based in Saudi

Sadiq Khan, son of a hard working tax paying bus driver and a dedicated public servant would seem the very model of assimilation that you question is possible.

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [214]

Well you probably have more experience of those places than I do. Most of my exposure to the Muslim world has been in Pakistan and Bangladesh, but I haven't really travelled in the Middle East. There are plenty of unsavoury aspects of western culture, I have just come back from my morning swim, where I saw vapid tattooed girls taking endless narcissistic selfies (not that I minded !).

Of course, you have no problem taking their money! Not sure what line of work you're in - defence? But in order to pay you they must have some level of civilisation.

I am not in favour of unrestrained immigration, but I am in favour of genuine refugees being treated with the same dignity as Poles and Hungarians were in the 40s and 50s. I also believe that Poland should aspire to be a modern, cooperative member of the EU and not just to replace the UK as the awkward squad. That means working with our neighbours to solve big problems and little problems.

Thinking Poland should abide by its previous agreements and contribute to the EU does not make you a radical leftist statist.

And the EU was certainly far more than just an economic entity when Poland voted heavily in favor of joining in 2004.

I'm generally a right wing person - business owner, believe in low taxes, individual responsibility, small govt; but being honest I see more danger in the world today from Trump, Putin and Erdogan than I do from any migrants or from what you appallingly refer to as 7th century cultures.

You are ignorant of the facts

The EU financial system does not require half of the funds being stumped up by villagers for a simple village hall or asphalt road. It's a grant not a loan. Have any of you driven over cobblestones in snow ? Each one becomes a tiny ice cube.

when you say they voted for "it" what does "it" mean ? Hard Brexit ? Soft Brexit ? Single market ? Customs union ? Switzerland and Norway are both in the Single Market and in the EEA and in the customs union - but this is a position the British government have not decide on yet (they have not decided on much)

Britain did need Europe in 1972 when it joined - left without an empire after the 60s it was falling badly behind its neighbors economically which gave it the impetus to join.

Right - rip up a perfect trade agreement with the 27 democracies next door and start to negotiate new ones with dictatorships on the other side of the globe (who only have one thing to sell). The logic of Brexit ! Might be a long 5 years......

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

Almost every word you write is incorrect - Brexit will screw London hard as the banks lose their passport if right and the free movement of capital with the EU is curtailed. It is already costing thousands of jobs in London that are going to Dublin and Frankfurt. That is why the govt is begging for an extension to the negotiating period - they know it is an economic disaster.

As for "less rules" then in order to keep exporting to the EU currently 45% of exports, then they will need to follow the EU rules anyway, except now that they will not have any say in the formulation of those rules.

Investors and the markets are scared because Brexit is a moronic idea that nobody is able to implement in a sensible way.

migration being the biggest issue ever is clearly your belief but for most people here it is way down the list - after employment, living standards, the health service, the constitution etc. The danger from migrants is far less than the danger from Trump and Putin.

The Brexit campaign did not mention any economic downturn - in fact they said Brits would be better off. This and all the other lies were taken down from their website the day after the vote.

Can you find some quote from Merkel inviting a million refugees ? Even though you are single issue migrant obsessives, I doubt you can find that.

Farage is I believe now presenting a radio show. Boris Johnson is putting in a terrible performance as foreign minister as the UKs influence in the world is plummeting. May has an impossible job ahead of her cleaning up the mess made by these clowns and the gullible voters.

Life / Gdansk Tips for Person relocating there [14]

Yes possibly - but they would struggle to wash, dry and iron in 100 zloty session ? With a dry cleaners you just dump the mess on their desk and let them do their thing. I guess I am normally dropping off a few other things - suits, ties etc that I wouldn't trust my cleaner with :)

The first sentence is corrrect but how does leaving the EU resolve that ? How will exiting the largest single market in the world, making things far more difficult for your exporters and devastating your main industry stop that happening again?

The Germans did not invite the migrants to Europe - they came up with a poor solution to an existing problem. An important reason for the migrants is The chaos caused by the wars in the middle east, in which the UK was an enthusiastic participant

A huge drop in the value of the pound since the referendum was announced; as a result the highest inflation for five years; an immediate increase of 20 billion in the government borrowing requirements in October 2016 and I suggest you wait for the budget later in November when this figure will be increased considerably - that's money that UK taxpayers your children and your grandchildren will have to pay in the future; economic growth that has slowed from being one of the best performers in Europe to just about the worst.

As for laws that have been passed - I cannot think of any major good laws implemented by the government since June 2016 - maybe the thing about tax credits? The rest of the time has been wasted in political infighting, a senseless election and bribing the voters of Northern Ireland. On her first day in office May made a speech about how she was going to address all of the burning injustices in British life - none of those promises has been addressed at all.
