News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1538]

No mental gymnastics required - I visited Polin because I had some spare time and I felt like it. Just like today I fancied taking my kids to the mall and doing some shopping andd visiting Pizza Hut - I know that will shortly be on the list of proscribed activities too.

As for what Polish Jewish acquaintances are doing or think about this law, I have no idea and I am not going to ask them because I don't care. One for example is a tax lawyer, another works in real estate and my interactions normally start with some chit chat about family and holidays and move on to whatever business we have to cover. It's called normal life and I recommend more people try it..

But a jew who lives here now and was born after 1945 murdered nobody, betrayed nobody. I know such people and they are true Poles - speaking Polish, living as good citizens, employing people and contributing much more to Polish society than an expat Pole spewing senseless and nihilistic ancient hatreds from his bedroom in Chicago.

Most white Zimbabweans would identity themselves as Zimbabwean in my experience- they certainly wouldnt say they were Dutch. Your obsession with blood and miscegenation is rooted in the 1930s - an era that most people except PiS and Orban would like to leave behind.

Amazed at the number of sensible people here talking about collective responsibility, reparations etc - what my grandparents did is nothing to do with me. Try to live your own lives right rather than rewriting the past

News / Poland's economic future? [294]

I know that long division is difficult but you need to take into account that Sweden has 4 times less people so the GDP per head is4x that if Poland. Just like, at a guess Poland and say Philippines probably have a similar GDP but your average Pole is much richer than your average Filipino.

Growth rates in mature economies are always lower than in emerging economies because there is a higher base - in fact in dollar terms then the increase of 1 percent for a Swedish citizen would be similar to the increase of 4.6 for a Pole.

dominionpost.com/Mobile/News

Here are the court reports from one week from one town in West Virginia. It's a very heavily white county, in the most trump voting state in the union.

What you will see is two murders, one sexual assault, one assault on police, one kidnapping, various drug convictions, and on the front page of this journal and enormous opiod problem.

That is about as relevant and as representative as keep posting dubious links about some kids in Morocco abusing a donkey.

If you're so worried about these things, it's always an option you stay put there in Illinois . You can still get Polish culture by folk dancing and pierogi somewhere on Milwaukee Avenue And you won't have to worry about being a few hundred K from any migrants.

Dirk the number of murders by whites in the US is multiple times the terrorist muders in Europe. It is obvious that violent death is far more common in the US, even in nice towns, than in the most dangerous parts of Europe.

You can view the hate speech laws with contempt- i dont much like them either. But they do exist, have been implemented by democratic govts right left and centre in Europe and if you want to live in one of those countries then they should be respected just like speed limits or laws on smoking weed.

There is in fact a long tradition in the US of disgruntled and alienated whites masscacring people indiscriminately - in cinemas, discos, in McDonalds, at school, at music festivals, sports events, college campuses etc etc.

Hate speech is very clearly defined in many legal lexicons. Most countries of the EU have such laws on the statue books. It is also clearly defined by the Council of Europe. The one people who didn't make a hate speech law were the slave owners of 18th century Virginia who probably didn't anticipate Facebook or social media trolls.

You arguments about crime in Sweden and Germany have been rebutted on many occasions by their governments - the Swedish government even made a special page because they were sick of right-wing trolld using those arguments.

As has been pointed out before there are also significant increases in crime in countries following Polish immigration - it was a long and boring useless thread about it in the UK for example

You don't seem to have solutions to the problem apart from moaning about immigrants. The German and Swedish government were reacting to this in their own ways - both of them have been through elections since this time.

Dirk in 1939 there were more than 100.000 Jewish soldiers in the Polish army.

There were none in WWI because Poland did not have an army then.

Not sure why these racist rants are allowed really - for the first few pages of this thread there was a sensible discussion about the law. Then they cracked open the krupnik at the Red Apple buffet and all sorts of nonsense theories started.

Real Estate / Inheritance law in Poland - My brother refuses to share profit from apartment sale [8]

Re his right to live there you must see a lawyer unless something was specified in your parents will. But it's better to sort it out with your brother in a human way first. As Dom says there is no way people here will know all the background.

He can't be forced by law to buy you out - he probably does not have cash to do that and limited access to credit.

Work / What is the average accounting/auditing salary in Poland? [42]

Even if you earned 50k euro in Warsaw you would have a very comfortable life, be able to save and given Polands low tax rate you might not be so worse off.

But rather than ask here a much more sensible approach is to discuss with a recruiter in your current town about the market there or think of where you would like to live - most places are short of accountants and your employers are being cheeky by wanting your skills for less money (you mamy have some experience they cant find in Warsaw).

Well said Maf - who can possibly want to rip up Poland's most beautiful and best known asset. Even if it did create jobs then life is about more than that - we are not the only creatures on earth and we have to share it. I would have thought people who preach about Christian values would understand that.

Law / Polish immigration law - permanent residence euro cit [4]

Are your lawyers clear on what are you looking to achieve ? You want a right to stay after Brexit or is this a tax question ? Question title includes Euro CIT but then does not mention them again

What did you pay U.K. tax on ?

You could not avoid Polish tax just by sitting watching tv - if it's more than 183 days you must file a tax return in Poland

No it is not clear - any crime committed would probably be by a non polish speaker and then you would have to explain what Jarod means. If all the Poles in a certain village locked up all the Jews in that village in a barn and waited for the Nazis to collect them does that count as an action by the narod ?

I don't have strong feelings about Poles or Jews but like Maf I think this law is extremely poorly conceived - it does not effectively solve any problems but it does create new ones.

Not sure what is to be gained by this unenforceable law - seems to me that PS were deliberately trying to provoke a culture war but didn't think the US would get involved.

But my main issue is that given it has become so sensitive why is it discussed in the middle of the night ? People rarely do their most thoughtful and error free work at 1.30

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

I think 19 percent is a fair rate - more of an issue is how it is spent.

The Hungarian consumer has no choice but to pay the VAT that they had to introduce to fund the corporate tax cuts.

They needed those tax cuts to maintain investment after investors got spooked by Orban forcibly nationalising banks and targeting other foreign investors.

So come to Warsaw and try and do a big deal in zloty or dollars - over a certain level here then business works in Euro.

The Euro is not stagnant - it has gained strongly against the pound since Brexit and the dollar since Trumps election. You can see money talking about where people think will be a safe investment.

EU funds might only be 3% of GDP, but they are closer to 20% of investment and in peak years it was over 30 %. That is very important since investment multiplies. This is stuff from literally week 1 of an economics course.

In fact without this investment, the amount of capital expenditure by Polish owned businesses is one of the lowest in the developed world - Partly because of the Audi syndrome, where successful people first buy flash cars and houses rather than re-investing in the business.

Polish exports to the EU are 30 percent of GDP - a figure that has doubled since the 90s and which would probably halve if there was a Polish exit.

Reimittances from Poles working abroad are another 1.5 percent of GDP and much of it goes into houses and domestic infrastructure (new rooves, plumbing, new furniture)

Finally millions of Poles are employed by EU companies in Poland - often receiving valuable training and certainly without that the pool of management talent in Poland wold be very thin - the education system here is good technically but awful for soft skills.

These are the facts that should be widely disseminated, not some economically illiterate twaddle about its only 3 percent. And if the price of all of that is that you might have to take in a couple of thousand migrants is that really so onerous ?

Can we here from a Pole in Poland about whether the EU is beneficial, rather than words shouted across the table of the Red Apple buffet after a dodgy bottle of Krupnik ?

Right - but what was in it for Austria, Sweden, Belgium or any of the other 10 net payers ? Nothing to do with wanting a buffer but everything to do with wanting a stable and prosperous democracy that they can trade with and wouldn't go up in flames like Bosnia

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

Poland's minimum wage only crossed 1000 zloty in 2006. So plenty of people were working for less than 50 zloty a day. Unemployment was nearly 20 percent so you could employ people for peanuts. Many employers did not even want to spend that 1000 and there was a thriving grey labor market. It was not "a bit poorer" than Germany, it was many degrees poorer. You would not know any of that because you were probably at school in Chicago.

Without a doubt inward investment revolutionised the labor market here and made local employers both raise their wages and behave themselves fairly.
