Life / Why do people think that I'm Polish ? [92]

i don't look polish at all ...... this morning someone told me are you polish???? ...... ...... are there any manners or common things polish people say that u can realize that that person is polish?????????

When people tell me that I look Polish I take it as a compliment (I'm 1/2 Polish, 1/2 Russian and all American). Perhaps it's your refined manners that give away your Polishness?

Life / Why do people think that I'm Polish ? [92]

I have two master's degrees (one of them from one of the top post graduate schools in the country) and a doctorate from the school ranked #6 in the U.S. I am tall, blonde, refined, slender and green-eyed. My skin is the clearest most beautiful porcelain. I have delicate features, and I have rosy lips, not to mention the hourglass figure and long, long legs!

Ok,ok, you talked me into it. I live in Chicago and I'll buy (you) dinner. You don't mind being seen with an aging but sprite lothario, right?

History / Can anyone from Poland tell me about Auschwitz and The Ghetto? [582]

...at the order of a Polish government which was made up of Poles? OK, guess they weren't Polish then. One thing though: why did the camps outlast Stalin?

Yes the 'communist' Polish government ran them even though only a small percentage of Poles were communists (Is this where I should add that a much higher percentage of Jews were communist?). As to why the camps did "outlast Stalin" um, this is one of those 'duh' answers; it's because the Soviet Union outlasted Stalin. The Russians were still there. Ever hear of the Warsaw Pact?

You seem to have a blind spot when it comes to the whole picture.

Life / What Polish people think about the Italian and Spanish men? [39]

(We) think that Spanish and Italian men (and women) are wonderful but our favorites are ambidextrous Brazilians who are 1/4 Aboriginies, 1/4 Macedonian, 1/4 Inuit and 1/4 Hmong. We 'feel' those are the best people.............

History / Polish-German alliance. [489]

I don't have the information here but I recall that in 1938 Hitler made an overture to Poland where he wanted access across the northern region (Gdansk, et al) and if given that an alliance would be possible. Some here might want to follow up on that.

Poles like you make me wish that Britain had joined the war on the side of the Nazis.

Ah, therein lies the true "heart of darkness". ... revealed. Thank you!

History / The restoration of Polish cities from WW2 destruction [118]

I have always been fascinated with the process of rebuilding of Polish major cities after the WW2. For me it is an amazing phenomenon

I've wondered about that as well. No Marshall Plan for Poland but hard work. An amazing feat. Thank you for the pictures.

Genealogy / Does your last name end in CKI not SKI [60]

Well, it's kind of late but I just found this thread.

In Polish, the 's' comes after consonants. The 'c' comes after vowels. Otherwise, it's essentially the same.......

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

Don't get me wrong but Catholic Church in my opinion have a bit to do with Poles being miserable. We are very religious and every Sunday instead of spiritual fest people are singing all these sad songs and are supposed to regret all their sins and pray...nothing else.

A valid point; the church is not especially known for its humor. Poles carry a burdensome history. By that I mean that they have been 'victims' so often because of their geography and because of their frequent quests for freedom which threatened other countries.

As to the British, they don't smile because they have bad teeth.

Life / Is the word "Polack"rascist? [185]

but I use being a Polack an excuse for when I do something stupid.

I suggest you drop that since it is such a negative connotation about Poles. Tell 'em your German when you do something dumb..........

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

When I was a kid (hundreds of years ago), I grew up listening to Bohemian jokes. When I met someone who was Czech I took a good look at him and wondered what was different.

Nothing was but children are impressionable and that's where the ethnic joke is sociologically dangerous.

I rarely hear "Polock jokes" today. About 20 years ago in Las Vegas, I was listening to a comedian who started telling them. I shouted from the audience "tell me the same joke about yourself". The audience was quiet and the comedian asked if I was Polish. I told him "yes, now let's see how funny you are". I was surprised when he apologized.

A few people in the audience applauded (don't know if they were Polish or not).

redheads sometimes need more drugs than other people.

That's just an excuse. Maybe I 'feel' that ex-blonds need more drugs; well, I did before shaving my head.

I don't think Blacks are free to spout anything offensive they want. Haven't you heard of defamation, libel or slander? It applies to everyone.

Black comedians in particular can and have spoken in the most insensitive way. Whether it's sex, or the "N" word, or characterizing people, there has been an allowance for them.

Only relatively recently have rappers come under (some) attack.

History / Polish-German alliance. [489]

"The Germans want your land, the Russians want your soul." I've heard that a few times but it seems to me that both Germans and Russians want Poland's soul and land.

Of course historically and against all odds it seems that Poles are too stubborn (by nature?) to give either up.

Why are you belting on about Russians and Germans stealing things?

It's good to keep things in perspective. As you know, we are supposed to learn from history.

Having said that, in a previous thread I noted, if Adolph Hitler had a kid, that kid should not be thought of as guilty for his father's crimes, and todays Germans and Russians are innocent of past crimes done by others.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [656]

I was wondering whats the typical Polish look of the Poles. The hair, eye, skin color, body build in both men and women, facial features.

You can tell someone is Polish by the twinkle in their eye; the shiny clean hair, melting smile, erect posture, courteous manner, philosophical wisdom, good manners and self-confidence.

News / US to deploy Patriot missiles to Poland [404]

The latest on the shield: Poland hopes U.S. will not let it down on shield

(Reuters) - Poland said on Sunday it hoped the new U.S. administration would not abandon plans to station a missile defence system on its territory.

President Barack Obama's administration is reviewing U.S. security policy, including the missile shield plan. This has prompted speculation he might shelve a project that has angered Moscow, with which Washington wants to mend ties.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Poland had taken "something of a political risk" in signing an agreement with the Bush administration to host the system.

Love / How to show a polish Guy I like him [56]

Just tell 'ski that you'd like to take him out to dinner. (he'll bite, pun intended).
Ply him with slightly too much wine and be your friendly self. Later, tell him you had a wonderful evening.

Anyway, that does it for me.

Life / Polish stereotypes of other nationalities!? [472]

French surrendered after 3 weeks (they were attacked only by Germans)

Poland after 45 days (and we were attacked from the both sides: by Germans and by Russians)

Glaswegians doesn't know much history. It's true that some Polish forces were still fighting after one month in Poland. Additionally, Poles never became like the Vichy French and Poles had substantial armed forces fighting Germans in other theatres not to mention the RAF. Paris never had a anything like the "Warsaw Uprising".

Amazing what people don't know and yet develop their opinions on.
