Language / How do Poles feel about foreigners learning their language? [105]

I am American and have been to Poland many times over the last several years. I don't speak Polish, but I continue to try and use Polish words and string them together in really ugly sentences. In my experience, Polish people love it when you try to communicate to them in their own language - even if you butcher it in the process. In fact, I once tried to buy ice cream from a little cart in Krakow. She refused to sell it to me until I could say Vanilla correctly. It took me about 5 minutes of trying before I could say "Waniliowy lodi, prosze". Once it came out correctly, I got my lodi and a bunch of people clapping around me. From that point on I promissed myself I would learn Polish.

I'm just getting started again trying to learn. It's hard but it's worth it. We're going again next summer, and I want to talk to friends and family in Polish this next time there.

News / Are Polish People Being Discriminated Against? Problems getting a US visa. [258]

I just had a very interesting conversation with my family and friends here in Poland. They are telling me that it is next to impossible to get a US Visa. They say that you have to spend hours on the phone to get an appointment - and every minute they are on the phone they have to pay $$$. Then once you do get an appointment, they are denied. Even worse is a story I heard that the Visa was not denied until the Pole got to Chicago - where he was not allowed to enter for no reason at all.

I know that it's not the easiest thing in the world to get a Visa to the US, and quite frankly, I don't mind it being difficault for security reasons, but are Polish people being discreiminated against?

Is this true, or are my family and friends blowing this out of proportion? Have any of you applied for a US visa lately, and if so, how did it go and what are your suggestions?

I just can't believe that with all the ways Poland has helped the US over the years that we would treat them like third class citizens.

Thanks for your comments....

Travel / Mobile Internet in Poland (traveling for a couple of months) [17]

Mattski,

Did you ever find a solution? I'm in the same boat and would like to use my iPhone as a modem with my laptop. I just don't know what carrier or plan to go with.

Please let me know what you found out.

Thanks,
