I've traveled all over so I like the idea of discovery as well. And generally University districts or artistic communities is where I do my bidding... and the outskirts.. never forget the outskirts!

well, you will love e-55 or hells kitchen.

carlton is the university district.

artistic, try fitzroy, northcote, collingwood. trams 86 or 112.

there are shitloads of bars all over melbourne hidden in different nooks and crannies. you just walk around and find them.

Yeah, but what makes a local a local? I mean, if you live there you're a local, right?

hard to define.

i work in the city and live 20 mins train ride away. i would never call a place in the city my local, but the bar 5 mins from where i live i would call my local.

some people however would call the pub/bar they frequent their local.

Well, I'm just operating on sheer intuïtion here, but I really don't think you could ever go wrong with a name like The Drunken Poet!

here is a link to the pub (and forget about it being an irish pub, its just like any pub):

myspace.com/drunkenpoets

melbournepubs.com/venue/893/

Yeah, but what makes a local a local? I mean, if you live there you're a local, right?

I decided to shorten the commuting distance to Broady, by, well, moving to Broady. :S

you've moved to broady? for serious? oh my gawd (said in best ethnic northern suburbs accent).

Follow the smoke haze, got it. :)

let me know what you think of it.

there is also e-55 on elizabeth st, good beer on tap, couches and laid back.

I'll tell you when you're older... ;)

im probably alot older than your good self young lady.

already found a man?

Don't be silly. You can tell her you found me in a magazine article. :P

hahaha...may have to try that one.

You're lucky I live in the slums and can't get on a bus to rip your face off... ;)

docklands hardly the slums, posh some may say.

Broady's fine... I think! How to compare it to.... hell!? Jokes! It's racially diverse and full of intriguing shopping centres... :S

pour the jokes on broady...just dont go looking for any ham.

Speaking of hell... I should be frequenting Hell's Kitchen in the next few weeks or so. If I can find it! I'll look for a barfly with dragon wings and a firey temper? ;)

i suggest starting from elizabeth street and walking up flinders lane and take the left alley opposite degraves. it is upstairs and you will have to fight your way through a haze of ciggie smoke.

who you going with?

id suggest catching up but not sure how i explain to my gf that im meeting up with a woman from the internerd.

back from the dead???...pity i have noticed at 11.25pm.

just quickly, are you heading out by yourself?

I like a bit of dinge, dirge and filth with my fresh beer and bass. :D Affordable... I like to settle in for the night. :)

also, head to hells kitchen (google the address), in the words of eddie murphy's landlord in coming to america, "you'll love it, its real fu<ked up".

hows broady?

dobranoc.

too busy listening to craig david?

hahaha...ash, you should have posted this in your melb thread. ive been checking that for the last 4-5 days. hardly enter off topic.

what are your pre-requisites?

ambience, price, location, etc.

im sure places that i would frequent may not be up to the taste of others.

for your more common places transport is an okay place.

beer deluxe way over prices for mine.

my brother swears by the drunken poet near the vic mkt, happy hour on all beers from 5-7 on fridays.

me, i prefer places like e-55 and hells kitchen.

here is an okay site: barfinder.com.au

ps mods: can you please move this thread to the australian section in pf?

long hangover?

I know little about the AFL culture down here, but if I was to say..

''Good old Collingwood forever,
we know how to play the game.
Side by side we stick together,
to uphold The Magpies name.
Hear the barrackers a shouting,
as all barrackers should,
Oh, the premiership's a cakewalk
For the good old Collingwood...'' Would that appease you...? ;)

im not pie-cist, some of my best friends are magpie supporters.

no, the cats are the team. but you should really find one you identify with.

Naked Beach Volleyball??

is that your sport of choice ;)

And the hair's no longer ridiculous!

cmon, its fabio.

How many are Collingwood supporters I wonder?

hahaha, you're getting it. ya gotta feel the hate, let it in.

Oh really? I would've thought it to be less rainy than North Holland? (But I suppose you're getting the full bucketfuls every once in a while!)

it really depends aj. we were on water restrictions all of last year and our dams were falling to 20% and the sky was falling. and then it literally did. we have had the highest record of rain fall for the year and summer.

I'm right near the Etihad stadium so I've *practically* seen a game already... is that meant to be an insult...?

why an insult?

finally after 6 months, the best game on earth returns.

and the shorts are no longer short.

the docklands. i thought you wanted the extra sleep and hence would move closer to broady.

and it isnt etihad, it is jihad stadium.

Haven't been to Australia, was just looking at some sport news and there it said that Australians have one sport all over them and that is "cricket" :D ... it said there is the world cup on, and Australia is favorite to win it.

Are you following it? ... we don't play cricket in Poland.

is this not the worst example of "how to do things"? can you imagine the the football worldcup dragging on over 2-3 months?

the only sport news worth following is afl. youtube it, will be confusing but a thrilling watch. maybe.

Hey, Ugg *is* an Australian brand... ;)

still ugghhhh.

Hey, I'm not looking for factory outlets, I'm more looking for facts on inlets...? Scenic bike paths, places to take ferry rides, good kebabs, cheap oil heaters, street festivals, rousing AFL teams to support...???

another bikie?? there are paths along the yarra and through carlton that i know of. you could always join the lyrca throng on saturday morning for the ride to mornington and back.

you can take a ferry from st kilda to williamstown. or get real adventurous and get the portsea to port arlington ferry.

not a big fan of halaal meat, so dont know much about kebabs. i prefer the lamb souvlaki's but the turkish bread, unfortunately they will never come together.

you dont need oil heaters in melbourne ;)

comedy festival coming up in april if thats your thing. most street festivals happen during the warmer months.

geelong cats, best afl team to support. but im guessing you seem more a magpies type!!!

I want Bikies at my doorstep and Underbelly in me backyard... ;)
Hey, where I'll be living, I reckon I'll get it! (The things we sacrifice for an extra hour in bed...) :S

broady? dallas? roxburgh park? fawkner? thommo?

Edit: And nobody told me about the wall of cars I'd meet on Citylink.. :S

I mean is that meant to be your idea of street art or did I just discover the weakness of your tram system???

Yes! I want answers!!! ;)

i never get citylink so got no idea.

i think its a weakness of our public transport system as a whole. try hoddle st/punt rd at anytime. awful.

im shocked that places like doncaster, templestowe, donvale have no train station nearby.

where i live its not too bad, 2 tram lines and a train line. but the further out you're the further you're farked.

Well I though that would be found on Swanston or Collins.. but I found a little bit of this a little bit of that everywhar...

ugggh, commercial areas, ugghhh.

if you're looking for decent factory outlets then head north to smith street. bridge rd used to be the ****, bit now its just chains saying they're factory outlets but charging the same as myer/david jones.

then again, whatever floats your boat.

I'm at Docklands baby. ;) Living it up... (for now!)

you go girlfriend.

It didn't rain *that* hard. ;) I appreciate the differential...

you will maybe have time to learn that you gotta carry an umbrella with ya at all times.

it is drizzling at the moment.

By the way... where's the ruff end of this b1tch? ;P

melbourne in general?

take a trip out to scumshine in the west, dandewog in the south east, frankston in the south east. in the words of eddie murphy's landlord in coming to america. you'll like it, its real ****** up.

Australia / Places to live in Melbourne... [36]

Hey, Sob. I appreciate your inside help.

I get there next week and have another 3 weeks to check things out. Should be able to locate a great place in that time...

nae bother.

glad i could kind of help, just lucky that you decided on the norf.

ive no idea about the south side of the yarra.

No I think the centre is something I picked up in England... just like ''going into town'' is..

yeah, it did sound more uk oriented.

Now I need to ask the most important of all questions... Which football team to cheer on this season?? Essendon?

Up the SWANS!! :))

nah, not the bummers.

i support geelong and thoroughly recommend impartial supporters to take them under the wing.

Any suggestions? Flemington??

Any idea how long that trip would take? From the centre to Broady?

is that a sydney-ism?

here is the timetable (20-30 min depending where you lay your head):
tt.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/tt/XSLT_TTB_REQUEST?command=direct&language=en&outputFormat=0&net=vic&line=02CRB_&project=ttb&itdLPxx_selLineDir=R&itdLPxx_selWDType=T0&sup=%20&count=1

if you want inner city living then Flemington, Kensington, norf melb are your best bets on that line.

Nooo! There must be public transport...? Trains?? *Gulp!* Hitch hike?? (Hitch a hitchings???) ;)

i take that back, there is a train line that runs up there but obviously no idea how close to where you're going.

and just remember no one travels to broady, everyone is travelling out of there.

No kidding! And I was heading to Melbourne for its quaint history of old curiosities... ;)

you should be, she has ole skool charm does this girl.

Speaking of picking up the slack and curiosities... remember this golden jewel of Australian prime time television?

i do remember that show. you must be of my vintage to remember it.

nearly as good as simon townsends wonderworld.

how ya go ashley?

No, alas, work based training in glorious Broadmeadows... :S

broady, thats hilarious.

well, there is your multicultural experience.

you'd need a car to get there.

Ok, well I guess as long as it's not *too* hectic. I do like the sound of central though... :)

busy on weekends but mid week should be quiet.

I was afraid that might happen... *sigh*, modernity... And for what? And extra 2 miles an hour?? :S (As long as they still rattle!)

hahaha, there are even newer ones.

if ya want ole skool then there is a city circle tram that is free.

or live it up: tramrestaurant.com.au/en/

my middle name is lazy.

im guessing you're either studying at rmit/la trobe?

is that where you are commuting?

fitzroy is far from multicultural or leafy and green but is diverse and arty and well serviced by pt.

also a good place to use as a base. plus only 15-20 min walk into the city.

you obviously been on gumtree to check prices and the like?

And I want to get on these funny things...

Honk Honk!

they look like this now (sorry, cant be arsed copying to my hard drive and then uploading pic):

Polish tram

can no longer view pf at work, and my memory aint the best to remember to log on.

what are you looking for?

renting by yourself or with others?

how far out do you want to live?

you prefer a more snobby scene (south) or an alt scene (norf)?

im no big fan of south side and if i was giving advice id suggest innercity places like richmond, carlton, fitzroy.

if you prefer city locale then maybe south melbourne or east melbourne.

all these options are going to be very $$$$ though but you dont want to be too far out.
