Language / Recommended for learners: Michel Thomas Method Polish Audiobook [60]

Wow...where do I start.

First of all I have lived in Poland for years and have experienced a pretty good cross section of English speakers. I am saying overall based on my experience I do not believe there to be a "fair share" of Poles here speaking English at a level rivaling a native.

I think your attempts to use the language to sound intellectual and to insult me have failed.

I also think your arrogance reflects a common trait I have mentioned here before.

There is quite a bit of difference between an American trying to teach Polish and a Poles trying to teach English :)

Nonsense. If both are fluent at the same level there is no difference at all. Learning from a non native speaker is the same in this example. It would lead to the same bad habits and non natural accent.

Still, I have experienced more than a fair share of Poles with competent English skills, easily rivaling those of some native speakers of the language.

The only ones I have seen like this lived in the US for years as children...and some of them have zero accent in English. More than a fair share rivaling natives though? I would disagree. I have spoken to people with PhDs in English and they still sounded like a parody from a Russian movie. It is all about where you grow up. I have never heard a foreigner speak flawless English unless they were raised in an English speaking society.

In Poland it's probably the same.-:)

I do think it is odd how bad some of the Poles who tell me they are English teachers actually speak English. They usually have pretty bad accents and I can't imagine how they teach anything accurately. Many of them don't even manage grammar correctly.

In my high school our language teachers were native speakers of the four languages taught...the same in the Uni I went to. I wouldn't want to learn Polish from an American who kind of knows it and speaks it with an American accent.

Love / Different relationship... can it work with Pakistani girl and Polish guy? [129]

I get dirty looks from ppl when im shopping with friendz. How bad is that?

It is horrible and primitive. If you are in a position to get away from your family maybe you should. You seem very unhappy and they seem very oppressive and backward. Don't let other people control you.

I bet im going to be the most hated paki on here!

Why do you keep saying things like this? If anyone hates you for anything you have posted they are idiots and don't matter. Worry more about what important people in your life think not a bunch of internet people.

They probably kill me

If you are serious...meaning honor killing is something you think men in your family are capable of...this is a big deal. I saw the 'lol' but you do have to consider this...I dont know how strict your family is.

If you love this guy and want a life with him it sounds like you know it will mean being excommunicated from family. You just have to decide which is more important to you. None of us can make that judgment.

lol i will lose all family ties

That is the root of things. Yes mixed cultural relationships are possible. But they quite often result in the loss or strain of one family or maybe both. You just have to decide...is he or your family more important. It sucks and is very unfair that others put us in these spots but they do.

i'm trying to decide. It is hard coz i dont know what to do

An internet forum is not going to be the place you find out either.

Some people here will give good advice...some will be stupid for laughs...some will be flat mean. If you need advice talk to people around you that you respect...grandparents, friends, people with life experience.

1.Yes

2.No

You should not ask this here. You are going to get a bunch of cruel people saying things that will make you question it. If you love each other and are good to each other don't sweat it. There are always challenges. You should now by now this forum is not the place to get reasonable advice about racial things.

Polish Christmas

It depends on the family. If the family is kind it can be nice. But like weddings and other celebrations here it lasts too long for me...a couple days of non stop eating and booze is unpleasant in my book. At some point it just hurts.

I already knew I hated carp and jellied fish cannot possibly taste better than normal fish. The two don't go together. Just refuse politely and if they are offended then they have the problem not you. As long as you are nice they have nothing to be uppity about.

Sometimes it pays to pretend you know less than you do. Bragging is never beneficial but playing dumb can reap much information.

I did fail to keep my composure one Christmas when said 'aunt' was mouthing off. I said something to her in Polish about how wonderful her jellied carp was (I hate jellied carp) and gave her a flirty wink. She rarely talked around me from that point on :)

Does she have an old "aunt" (I swear they call everyone they know a relative here) that hates foreigners and is comical to watch as she puts on a fake smile and slags you off in Polish because she thinks you can't understand?

Ah family :)

Love / Polish Pet Names For Girls. [156]

Don't ever call her this...not even in a joking way. I don't see how anyone could suggest this and think it was funny. Polish girls do NOT take such names lightly even if it is clearly a joke.

UK, Ireland / Hand washing at public toilets in the UK [75]

I just passed one in the Warsaw Central Station underground and looked in past the two old women attendants talking...the floor had several used paper towels strewn about. You could smell the urine. It did not look at all worth paying for. There are plenty of options near by.

Life / Reasons for moving to Poland [291]

I have never seen a cockroach here so they must stay out of my flat. I bet you need a stamp to allow them in and to register each of them with his own little zameldowania.
