Life / I'm British in Poland and I think that it's time to go back to the UK! [240]

When in Poland it's good to make an effort to be like them

Word 'Poland' in this sentence you can replace with any other country. If you visit any country you look around and behave the way not to offend people.

Last weekend I met Polish guy and he was saying to our friends 'You know in Poland in shops we have small plate for coins on the counter in the shop....here in UK I put coins on the counter and shop assistant looked offended' - exactly. Here it is sort of sign of anger in Poland it is just normal behaviour.

My positive comments were ignored

To be fair contrary to some people on this forum you are not rude but.....you started this thread wrong way. It would be better perceived if you said 'After so many years I came back and...I did not like this...this....but with this I was positively surprised'.

As someone mentioned above- It is American forum and free speech is allowed.....but it is not criticising one bad service it is comparing and SAYING THAT EVERYTHING IS BETTER IN USA so people are allowed not to agree with him.

Like : Graffiti is better in USA because it shows are of activity for different gangs and in Poland it is just random hooligans activity. Subject to debate....Some animals sign their territory by peeing so for me it is sort of jungle rules not civilised country.

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

@Dirk diggler

I must admit you are right. English are quite liberal but in any coffee shops ( especially near train stations) toilets are closed and they give you key if you have receipt. Otherwise...don't know about homeless but all druggies !!!

For me it is amazing how selective power of observation some people have. I live in UK , I have visited USA for 6 weeks and I am Polish....and I am not astonished by customer service in UK or USA. Shops and restaurants full of kids working there to earn extra money. They did not bring me to my knees with quality of their service. Some will do with elocution lessons as they don't speak by just mumble.

In general there are better and worse things in any country but saying all is bad in Poland is just stupid.

@Rich Mazur

Hospitals always ask for cash up-front? So what if someone is hit by car and is unconscious? Do emergency services check his pockets if he has enough cash before trying to save him?

I don't think so. It is the same like in USA.

They ask up front for some tests, doctor examinations ....just like any private services do.

Ha,ha exactly 'Towarzyszu' ...or in the form like 'Wy Kowalski'- I remember from old films.

In general- every country has its cultural/language rules and it is a bit stupid coming and criticising them. I would advise some tolerance and flexibility.

I got really tired of even hearing those pointless third person things like prosze pana or czy pan. .

I guess in your opinion the best would be if people in Poland just spoke English.

For me it is pointless hearing 'keep in touch' 'How are you' .....which means really nothing.

1. We never refuse to treat anyone in our ER. Ever.

Is it so great in USA?....it says about life-threatening illness or injury....You just did not feel very well in Poland....and had enough energy to argue about payment....it could be indigestion or hangover not life threatening illness.

According to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), any person who goes to an emergency room must be stabilized and treated for life-threatening illness or injury, regardless of their ability to pay. Hospitals are required to provide "emergency medical treatment" which is lifesaving treatment and/or stabilization, and provide treatment for women in "active labor" (water has broken).

I have never really followed it from your point of view but I think it is history now....I don't remember from my lifespan ever hearing anything anti Jewish in Catholic church. Maybe Jews similar Polish like to feel sorry for themselves. I think it causes bitterness and so much negativity.

I don't know maybe I live in UK which is not very religious and rather cynical country so i got more cynical now....If someone tried to tell here about Jews killing Christ they would laugh and say that Christ is some imaginary figure which never existed. ha, ha sad but at least not much antisemitism here.

Just changing subject but similar thing just as example.I know it is on smaller scale.
I recently read some article about Catholic church in East Anglia /Norfolk in UK (area where i live). It was permanently ( with some breaks when King/Queen was Catholic) prosecuted for centuries. Lots people were killed, many moved to France. And now - some catholic churches are back but lots are taken over by Church of England which is nearly 'dead' and changed to coffee shops. When you think about it...but as for today both religion exists in peace next to each other.

UK, Ireland / British people more intelligent than the Poles? [53]

to be fair I think average polish person stopped on the street will have problem to locate Japan on map or find Japanese capital.

I suppose some of Eastern countries have different level- kind of general education.

Surely you don't mean that we are all uneducated and closed-minded? ;)

Of course not :-)- I live in Cambridge- got you into complexes- too many clever people in one small town.

UK, Ireland / British people more intelligent than the Poles? [53]

I think it is more about education and general 'open mind' than intelligence.I know it is not very serious but I was quite impressed by young Japanese in this film. I would assume that Poland is completely alien land for them but on ( not very good map) they had general idea where Poland is.

I have bad feeling that average British person stopped on the street would have problem with it.

Law / Getting married in Poland (documentation, church) [42]

If it was only church marriage I don't think you can register it.

In Poland official marriage is in registry office. If you are Catholic you can combine both. If you have some registry confirmation from Philippines I think it would need to be translated into Polish language and submitted to relevant office in Poland. I ma not sure if it can be done by post or your husband will have to do it by himself.

Classifieds / Polish domiciliary carer worker in Bromley area [20]

No, you made it up. I did not wriggle out of anything and you are very good at twisting things- what I said was ' work shy on benefits will not go to do this job'- and as a matter of fact it does not matter if it was English, German, French... whatever. Some people will not do it. That is just how it is.

And most people with families will not do it either as hours are awful that is why I said that English will not queue for it..

And you start going on my nerves too with this twisting and some odd oversensitiveness. Time to finish this discussion:-(

Classifieds / Polish domiciliary carer worker in Bromley area [20]

Maybe, I never did this kind of job but no doubts it is hard. Again if someone from Poland ( EU) who speaks English decides to do this job and does not like it she/he can always go back. It is not prison.

just pointing out that this job is looking for women to exploit. It might even be a front for prostitution, and Londoners are smart enough to know that.

I am not sure why you are so angry.

Maybe they are dodgy or .....maybe they just struggle with staff. I don't know but I don't assume things if I don't know.

low paid job- They don't pay below minimum wages as it is illegal so who is exploited?.

Please, don't twist my words I said 'these work-shy on benefits' I did not say English are lazy.- I understand in your opinion it is better to do nothing and moan, moan moan instead of doing some job? Any job start somewhere, them move on. NO on minimum wages you can rent room for yourself ( don't say about London).

To be honest 'Polish' is only in title of this thread. I assume that they look for someone who speaks English I doubt they pay much plus hours are not very sociable and work probably hard. I don't see crowd of English queuing for this job. With sure not all these work-shy on benefits.

I think it is also advertised in UK and they struggle to find someone so nothing offensive.....

If it was written in Polish and directed only to Polish it would be different matter.

Ha- I think there is one thing that Jewish and Polish have in common- we like to feel as a 'victims' of the world :-)

Talking about Polaphobes... I vaguely remember was it few months ago...some Rabbi in New York organising some hateful march in front of Polish embassy....

That is why I always preferred living in bigger cities. If I was to live in one of these little villages I would feel like ,buried alive'!!!!

Anyway I plan to visit Krakow next year during Jewish festival and these restaurants on Kazimierz serve very good food :-)

while traveling through Polish villages might well yield stares, occasional cat calls or unwanted and self-conscious staring!

Remember- life in little villages is dull like dishwater water so looking at someone who is different is quite a bit entertainment.:-) they would look at anyone different.

The latter I have on good authority from Polish Jews returning to their parents' villages during the late '80's, early '90's, and being identifiably Jewish, had less than positive experiences:-)

I think that as dolnaslask said it is different generation.I think lots of older people could have not so good memories about Jews action too ( joining UB special services in 50 -ies which tormented and broke lots people.)

[moved from]

As far as racisim in Poland, I feel once again that a random, identifiable Jew would be at far greater risk than a black woman, as the latter is not seen as a threat to take over Polish society.

I don't think that it is the case. I was born and educated in Krakow and unfortunately I don't live there now but we have Jewish culture festival in Krakow, there is small Jewish community which is settled very well , Kazimierz has changed from rundown area to pleasant ,booming district....In general I was brought up in quite positive attitude to Jewish culture but since I emigrated my feeling cooled down. I think there is quite strong anti polish feeling among some Jews in America which is quite sad.

Life / Should I expect racism as a 'black' woman in Poland [149]

When I worked for a large firm here with several people of colour, both men and women, the ones with horror stories to tell were men with dark skin who had Polish wives or girlfriends

I believe you. I think its hidden complexes so by nasty racist behavior they feel them selves more important.

It is not different to leaflets left i Huntington after Brexit- 'Polish vermin go home'.

their

Thank you for advice but I am still very Polish :-)
