Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [849]

Also, many weaker teachers will simply teach to the test - which might help short term test results but hurt their longer term problem solving skills...

Theoretically ,yes but unfortunately education system is based on tests/exams/certificates.

The important question is only how these tests are designed , I think some of them can teach you initiative and logical, critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1293]

Exactly-that is the clue- it depends where you shop.

To be honest I struggle with bread in UK- Polish one here is awful- it is not proper one from bakery but chemical s..t., in supermarkets or bakeries ...not great.

Most of them are heavy like growing in your stomach.

The only place where bread is delicious is on these market stands with fresh products- It is great choice in Cambridge but I think most of these are Italian recipes.

Work / Diversity in Poland especially in workplace [90]

HR - we talk about bigger Companies. Small one don't have much of HR - maybe form time to time some external adviser.

I ma not sure if I have so much trust in HR people - sometimes they act very sensible but sometimes don't want to be too much involved.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1293]

I find the chicken in PL to be completely tasteless. Fed on chemicals and kept in cages in the dark.

I think it depends where you shop.

I have very similar impression of British food. There are butchers in small towns but in general supermarket- meat-cut-packed- not sure what's inside. Don't even mention British sausages.

No offence but I always find it amusing as most Europeans find British food rather 'unappealing' but locals always feel upset about it.

Work / Diversity in Poland especially in workplace [90]

@jon357

Because it is difficult process - It is fine when team is diversified but if it is not and Manager needs to employ someone extra it gets difficult. If someone is different ( much older, different social class...) this person will not fit within the team and will not feel well there. There is a risk he/she will resign.

It is not only problem in Poland - Situation like this happened to me in UK but I also witnessed it in Companies I worked.

Work / Diversity in Poland especially in workplace [90]

@Spike31
I think question was about diversity at work not emigration. By Diversity I understand not only nationality but also sex, age , ..sometimes education.

Work / Diversity in Poland especially in workplace [90]

I think that diversity in Polish workplaces grows in a very natural way ( not forced ). There are workers coming from South of Europe - Italy, Spain, Portugal where unemployment is quite high. Recently lots Indians apply for jobs in Poland. ( especially IT specialist). I would say it is very healthy diversity which bring people with new skills ideas to workplaces in Poland.

I think that the only way to asses it would be checking test results for certain group of students. For instance there are 2 groups of students at school and 2 math teachers. It can be compared which group has better results.... They only risk is that in one group there are more clever students that in other :-)

if a better teacher replaces a bad one, it is OK

I think it is one of the fields which is hard to judge....I remember in my grammar school ( I guess it is still like it now?) they had list of how many pupils from certain year/class passed exams to Universities. I did pass entrance exams at Polytechnic by my match teacher was awful I was just relatively good at math/physics and got some private tutoring. So....

History / Why is Poland weaker than Russia? [390]

I wonder if me claiming I am Polish, not an American, would make them not charge me with espionage.

With sure it would save you some money. My friends- English-went to Russia few years ago. They were not impressed by one thing- As soon as it was noticed that they are from 'west' Europe some unexpected extra charges appeared everywhere.

Travel / Are Polish people as unfriendly as Slovaks? [84]

I think that it is also another reason. I knew quite a few Slovaks who watched polish tv. I ma not sure about coverage but they were clearly able to watch it.

Life / What do decent Poles think about true rightists ? [148]

From my observation in the UK- the second generation of European immigration assimilate very smoothly there.

People who can't read and write in their own language...How long would it take before they can run independent life in new country- 100 years :-(

Life / What do decent Poles think about true rightists ? [148]

Why?......I thought all these 3 countries invited so many refugees with open arms and no integrating policies now?- it is like catastrophe waiting to happen!

I suppose it is in any country not just Poland. Without language you feel quite isolated. Even in places like Belgium, Holland....where people are quite bilingual it can be tiring in any social meeting to switch to English all the time (as sort of international language nowadays).

I do believe they are strong and attractive enough to be easily adopted by new Poles, as you call them.

I think that the main reason that immigrants 'have to ' assimilate relatively quickly in Poland is that we don't have this 'postcolonial guilt'. We were bit homogenous before and I find it quite pleasant seeing second generation of Vietnamese immigrants speaking perfect Polish. Sign of good assimilation with natives :-)

this

Ha,ha I don't think it is true and....with world nowadays obsessed with PC you could upset other religions or atheists....

I have just read your exchange of opinions about too many exams in Poland and Mafketis ideas of one-to-one tutoring. From my observations standard schools in UK are overcrowded and not always so good but ....as it is class society in private schools and good universities ( Cambridge, Oxford...) education is superb.

Also- just my personal experience- all these exams which I took in Poland ( grammar school- technical University) helped me to work and learn quickly when under pressure.

UK, Ireland / SMART MOVE! Thousands of Poles are leaving the UK because 'life is a piece of s*** here now'. [26]

You and I both know that for the typical working class Pole, the UK just offers so much more in life, and that won't change anytime soon.

You generalize now. For some yes for some no. I would say as for today it is getting less and less attractive. Especially for working class Poles.

I am not sure many Poles would like to raise family in London where at least 1 stabbing a day seems like standard activity.

Life / Worst aspects of living in Poland? [82]

The next day you get a doctors note covering their whole notice period and you never see or hear from them again.

Sad but true. Another problem pregnancy- I live in UK ( now) and women work during their pregnancy as normal here. In Poland it is some sort of 'fashion' toget pregnant and get sign off by doctor for 9 months.

Language / How do Poles feel about foreigners learning their language? [105]

Especially, the ones that got suckered into learning from a UK teacher then come to American and haven't a clue.

ha,ha....UK teachers teach proper English in USA you just speak post colonial twang.

can catch them in either a lie or an English error.

O,Yes we know that you like to patronise people. The problem is that I have seen samples of you polish and it is not as astounding as you think but rather poor so picking on others is rather petty. TOO BIG FOR YOUR BOOTS

Life / My Last Link To Poland Died - Why Leaving Poland Was My Best Decision [249]

And where did I mention anywhere that I am religious? I just find putting off reading your immature, stupid posts full off hate to Poland - just one generalisation of country of 40 million people.

if you are real it is clearly something wrong with you and I would suggest some psychological treatment.

Poland's so free that you can be arrested or fined for crossing the street wherever you like!

And what is your point? different law in Poland and England in relation to crossing roads so what? The same as different laws in USA and UK.

We know very well that in UK you can do what you want like raping British girls for years because police, social services were too busy to cover it. Stabbing on daily basis in London because police is too frightened to stop and search certain minority....Invading someone private land with caravans and dump rubbish there including antisocial behaviour as they 'can'.,

UK so petrified to upset certain groups that they can do what they want.....Is it this wonderful British freedom????
