I think it is very dangerous assumption that poor and uneducated vote PIS and well-off and educated vote PO.

From economical point of view - I think there is big divide between west /east and less visible south/north.

I think west and south are much richer/better developed ( more populated) than other 2

The fact that Russian lands are better developed than Austro-Hungarian ones is certainly puzzling.

Not sure where you have this idea from? I would say Austro-Hungarian towns/villages are doing very well now....but east wall of Poland? I would say it is the poorest part of country.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

I don't think this guy who taught us had university degree but with sure he was very good. I think if he never had gone to Poland to teach he would not have discovered his talent.

I think probably 30-40 years ago when Poland was behind iron curtain any 'English native speaker' was a treasure. Not now.I think it is not easy to get job in these private language schools in Krakow.

@Dougpol1

I think some of them just go abroad for a year or longer for some experience, excitement, travel...... When I still lived in Krakow we got British guy who was coming to my Company and had lessons of English with us ( different groups, different levels Company paid for it). He worked in England as a restaurant manager - he passed this TEFL exam in UK and he came to Krakow to teach. I think he was really very good teacher....not teacher as such but no doubts he was much better than lots of my teachers I had at school.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1139]

You show me the tangible negatives and I can learn.

Tesco - are there any in France, Germany....Carrefour, Kufland, Auchan any in UK?. Clearly West European country keeps their own networks not keen to introduce any foreign. Poland was just flooded with them. Lots of them avoided paying much tax in Poland and transferred profits out. It has changed now - more polish shops more fair tax rules.

@Miloslaw
No I don't remember sixties but I think it was different in UK than in 'socialist' Poland. Not only homosexuality was not criminalised but also women situation was different. I think it relates more to fifties but in Poland women were encouraged to do any job in UK to get married ,stay home and look after husband.

Ha,ha not sure how it would work in Poland :-)

I quite like this one :

>>>>Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.>>>>

rzynastka for retirees, 500+ extended to first children, money for pigs and cows..

I think that if I lived in Poland maybe I would see things in similar way but by living abroad you can't help but compare and I don't think it is much different in other countries.

We just started building social housing in Poland and they are mainly given to the families on law income. In UK you have families of native British and with foreign roots - some with lots children living from generation to generation on benefits- all funded by working people taxes. What about Labour party in UK all nasty anti-Semitic remarks. There are not so many Jewish in UK but lots Muslims so again they want them to vote..... I know I don't live in Poland so I am not so affected by these changes/decision but I would not say it is just Poland. In some aspect I am happier with trzynastka for pensioners , 500 plus for normal working family on low income...(I think farmers are in general supported like this in France, UK ) than all for some fat cats in Government.

What do you mean by handouts? I would not say Poland swamps people with benefits. Principles of democracy-? People usually vote for party who promises/make impression that their life would be easier if they won. It is quite normal I think.

I visit Poland few times a year but I talk to people. I would not say I am under influence of PIS propaganda as I don't like their narrow-mindedness they are like polish version of 'Talibans'. :-).What does not change the fact that average 'Kowalski' is more interested if he would have job, price of properties, food, nurseries....

I think that if we named street after someone it should be poet, writer, inventor like Mickiewicz, Slowacki, Rej.....not after some political activist so it would be no need to change these names later.

What is exactly socialist about this government? 500 per child? What about UK other countries in Europe - There are lots, lots benefits, free houses for workshy there . Increasing salaries for teachers.....you were shouting loud they should be increased as teachers fought for it in UK.

I am not keen of PIS as on ethical, moral grounds they are very narrow minded and lack tolerance but they do much more for average person than PO ever did. PO was a bit like in 'Animal Farm' we are all equal but there are more and less equal.

I understand that you are British and you live in Poland now I am Polish and I live in England. I came to the conclusion that even by learning language, reading papers, watching tv....having native friends it is sometimes hard to understand some events as we were brought up in different culture.

In some aspect ( even with your class division) I find some things more socialist in UK than in Poland. One of them is state pension. And I will never understand mentality of 'champagne socialists' here they are just pathetic.

Feedback / What makes an excellent forum? [119]

I was on this forum few years ago and I remember there were some nasty sometimes personal posts here. I think it is much better now.

It is difficult to find fine line between hate speech and some blunt statements. I don't think there is hate speech now but some statements are blunt and not always thought through.

News / LGBT hate speech to be banned in Poland [208]

There are gay bars in Krakow. I don't think it is so bad...I think it depends what sort of people you mix with....lots are just indifferent.

Thinking about it - for anyone who is 'different' if someone is black, guy, disabled- life is easier in bigger cities.

To be honest I live in UK - all guy rights and everything but just imagine group of guys on Saturday night entering pub in rural Scotland or Wales.....can't imagine they would receive warm welcome.

I don't live in Poland now but I think that polish society is very divided now. There are obsessive PIS supporters who don't tolerate gays and the rest of society who acknowledge them and tolerates.I think in bigger cities you have guy bars and it is quite normal now.

Strange as from legal point of view it has never been illegal in Poland contrary to these 'very tolerant' countries in Europe when it was illegal 30-40 year ago.

Did you really research it in every country in Europe or it is your another anti-polish statement?

Language / Burak or redneck? [36]

I think in everyday colloquial language 'burak' has not so strong meaning. If someone does something stupid- one off- not according to general savoir-vivre we can call him burak.

>>>And nearly always overweight, a drinker, superstitious but not necessarily very religious, poor taste, a mistrust of anyone outside their immediate family and with a low IQ. True underclass.>>>>

I would not say that in everyday usage it has so strong meaning.

Another thing using word 'wsioch', 'wsiok' for someone's bad behaviour .....I am careful with it as some people( whose families originates from the country) find it very offensive.

@Joker

There are private language schools in Poland where English native speakers teach. These schools are quite popular in Poland and it is not so easy to get job there.

I ma sure they are not full of British paedophiles and murderers.:-)

No I have never been a teacher but I have been a student- If material needs to be tailored to the group that is why teachers need additional hours to do it and to be paid for it. It is customer service/service for which tax payers pay so they want to know what they pay for. I don't understand why it is the problem? Do it ,stay at school and be paid for it.

Average person on the street says: 'O teachers have just few hours, lots holidays wants lots money but we spend in office 40 hours a week'.....that is why I think it is very logical to create extra time at school it is transparent , honest and maybe needs introducing.

Thta is what is on the most Universities. Professors/Doctors have their rooms where they work between lectures.

Another option flexible hours/work from home but again it should be more defined.

>>>>and grading written work is often best done not in an office setting but in two or three rounds with time between them>>>> I don't quite understand what you mean by this?

I don't think that going cheap is just Polish problem. Look at British NHS- disaster - lot's tax payers money just wasted. Schools...all social class division good school are really private schools which are not free.

It's not about putting in X number of hours a week,

I am not sure what you mean about specific tasks? Big part of teaching is ...'teaching'- I think that the big satisfaction for teacher is to see result.

-teacher of polish language ...:result: students read lots, are well spoken, good at interpreting literature.
- math teacher...students are good at any calculations, logical thinking.....,
- foreign language teacher - student are able to communicate fluently.

It is not like office or factory job but more like customer service job- you teach, interact with students - give example by your behaviour, rules, ethics.

I am not sure but maybe on this forum you interpret things differently. I think that people in Poland respect education. I would say that University attendance is still quite high comparing to other European countries.

I am not sure what is wrong with standardizing hours- maybe just to make it clear that they do much more like preparation, checking tests....I don't think anyone has problem to pay for this time. This just should be done at school not at home. And it would be 20 hours lessons....20 hours preparation so they are paid for 40 hours. What is wrong with it?

I think everything needs some balance. I would believe some young ,dedicated teachers spend lots time on preparations/checking tests but there are also lots teachers doing bare minimum. How does PE teacher spend these 40 hours, exactly??

I don't want to offend you but I have impression that you are dedicated Guardian reader and Trade Unions supporter....lots of exaggerating and dramas and want, want....should be....

I can't compare it to UK - how many hours teachers work a week but I believe more than in Poland and classes are much bigger ( I guess that is why it is need for teachers' assistants). Plus it is like everywhere in budget salaries- 22.5 K start salary in London it is starving salary but in poor north town it is good salary.

Not sure children would pick accent from teacher? I guess they pick it from parents , friends when growing up.

I agree- not good idea.

So we will end up with Ukrainian teachers - they can relatively quickly learn polish.

Idea is good but I think language could be the barrier.....In small towns, villages not big chance for lessons in English.
