Life / Public Transport Woes in Poland [11]

I am using Warsaw public transport since many years on a daily basis. What irritates me is (based on me daily commuting to work by ZTM)

1. People with prams using this as a nuclear weapon to get space in the standing area, whatever how many people there are on the bus / tram

2. People (mostly pensioners) occupying a seat on the aisle side, blocking access to the window side which is empty. They do this on purpose
3. People insisting on buying from the driver a ticket and slowing down everything, even when there is a ticket machine on the bus
4. Perfectly healthy pensioners thinking they have God's given right to about any place on the bus /tram. Less on the metro because somehow they avoid that mode of transport

5. People with shopping carts, using them as a weapon to get a place double as they should get

And the smelly ones - somehow they always find money to buy their alcohol but not for bar of soap - which is cheaper.

Food / Polish wine produced in the Zielona Góra region [41]

In the future, hopefully, things will develop well, but as I say, it needs a change in the law.

Still the two weblinks in my last posting clearly state there are producers who sell officially.

Did you ever try it Jon, Polish wine? And what's it like? Or Harry in Sandomierz?
Would like to get a bottle somehow, to take home to Belgium as a present, but that might be very difficult I guess.

And now I found this:

adoriavineyards.com/en/?ts=1403875630
polskiewina.com.pl

Pretty pricey though.

Life / How Much money for Gas heating in Poland's winter?? [4]

A lot of people have meters

We have a gas meter, but gas is only used for cooking. Central heating, together with hot water, is supplied centrally - as is the case in a lot of areas.

So for the central heating they calculate a fixed sum per m2 - and this you pay the whole year.
For hot and cold water the meters are checked twice per year and after each 6 month period they calculate if you should get money back on your monthly costs or have to pay extra.

Travel / Can i enter Poland 2 days before my visa start date? [9]

If you're from a country that needs a visa to enter, you will be rejected.

Justly so. Why all this third-world or US immigrants suppose they will get an exception to existing EU/Schengen rules?

In our flat it is calculated into the monthly fixed costs, which we pay to our współnota. They base it on the m2 of your flat. In our case it is 4 PLN/m2. I think in a lot of Warsaw homes they do it like that.

Classifieds / D&D Group for Expats in Warsaw needs one more player... [69]

Exactly. These are not people as we know it. They think normal life is playing games. I mean he can fill countless pages with descriptions of how this weird stuff is sooo much better than let's say a trip with your wife to the vegetable market in Wolumen, a beer with your mates at U Pana Michała, joining a neighbor (non-expat, not highlife) at a grill in his city garden. Now in all these activities there are real people involved. That is the difference. They do not have to make up some artificial round table. They have a regular job, kids, a life, shopping on Saturdays, movies and dinner on Sat evening.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

sodexo meal vouchers, on how they work and where can I use them

For sure they can be used in any supermarket. Where I come from they can however only be used for food, I am not sure what's the rule in Poland on this one.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

Wit which kind of cheese can you compare Wensleydale?
As for beers...let's see... Old Speckled Hen, Hen's Tooth, Abbot Ale, Bellhaven Twisted Thistle IPA, Bishops Finger, Spitfire Kentish Ale, St. Edmund's Golden Beer, Belhaven Black Scottish Stout.

As for Cheddar, it seems Valley Spire is still offered:

Is it much different from the Hatherwood one?

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

Merged: British week in Lidl

Next week there will a British week in Lidl. Besides Cheddar there will be cheese from Valley Spire - Stilton and Wensleydale. Are they to be recommended? There will be also be a rather extensive selection of British beers.

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

It seems that Lidl (at least the one I go to in Warszawa Młociny) has taken its Valley Spire Cheddar from the shelves. I wonder if that's the case in other branches as well?

I sure hope it will come back.
There will be a British week however in Lidl, and they will have two kinds of Cheddar, Heatherwood and another one, Somerset Vintage Cheddar. Is that one to be recommended?

Also I saw in Biedronka last week Cheddar as well, I wonder if that is consumable.

News / Poland one step closer to visa waiver by US Senate [59]

Poland wants to be the Trojan Donkey - everything to please the NSA and the torture practices in Szczytno. And still you have to face an idiotic, imbecile US official at the imbecile US Embassy -and still that same imbecile turns down your visa application. Btw I am mystified why anyone, anybody would like to go to the US voluntarily.

History / Poles slaughtered during World War 2 by partisans in Koniuchy [10]

It's easy to talk about these things with the luxury of distance but sad to make a trolling post about 'commies' when the incidents took place during the worst period of history in which to live and in one of the worst places. Sadly it was a time of massacres -

In this aspect, read "The Bloodlands" by Timothy Snyder. Very disturbing reading.
These kind of postings...you can smell them from a mile to come....You cannot wait until the word "Jew' pops up somehow.

Life / Driving Offences in Poland - How Fast can you go without being arrested? ;) [56]

I got asked for double that in exactly the same circumstances, showed them that I only had ten zlots in cash and asked if they took credit cards, was told to p!ss off.

The Law didn't ask me for any cash at all, they only wrote out a "mandat". Which I decided I would not pay. Only to get almost 12 months later a letter from my bank to inform me that they on the order of HGW they would have to block my bank account if I didn't pay up.
