Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

( ushownz)

it is "usiadz" which means - "sit down"

( pas-coo-ra)

not sure. Could it be pas-coo-da?

Then it could be "paskuda", which means ugly, very ugly..
However, it is a teasing, joking word said to a beatuful woman or a young girl, and she knows that she is not.

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

The two words are not pronounced the same in polish.
The bad word (chuje) sounds like "whoyeh" and the good one (to feel) - "chooyeh"

Hope it helps :)

Language / Polish sayings [236]

Na Boze Narodzenie przybywa dnia na kurze stapienie, a na Nowy Rok na barani skok - At X-mas we gain light at the size of chicken's step, at New Year the size of ram's jump.

Boze Narodzenie po wodzie, Wielkanoc po lodzie - Rainy X-mas, frosty Easter.
(can be reversed, it's a way of forecasting the spring)

Are they Polish sayings?

Yes, I heard them all :)

Modli sie pod figura a diabla ma za skora - he(she) prays but has a devil under the skin.

Pan Bogu swieczke, a diablu ogarek - A candle for God, a stump for the devil (said about two faced people)

Jakby suka nie dala to by pies nie wzial - if the ***** did not put out the dog would not hump her.

vet, you just said "My mother does not feel well". Nothing wrong with this statement. It does not sound like you used any swear words in error. Phew.

Language / Are the languages of Russian and Polish similar at all? [94]

Thanks, I'm desperately trying to find Polish lessons for adults in the Elgin, Il area, but am having no luck

I know it's far, but the only ones that offered polish language lessons are city colleges in Chicago, Wright College for one. Give them a call, they might know more.

Language / Polish or any Slavic language key to any other Slavic languages? [126]

When I was learning English, many words in the dictionary sounded similar, but they were pronounced different. I had French in high school in Poland, so it seemed like the same word could be pronounced different in Polish, then in French and English.

I guess, after centuries of mixing we are a one, big, happy family who sometimes have strong disagreements, but love each other nonetheless.

A lot of words are borrowed from other languages. Everybody in the world seems to know "OK" even tough it is not a part of any language, but English.

Language / Polish or any Slavic language key to any other Slavic languages? [126]

Some words might be similar in spelling. Example?

My Mexican friend gave me a letter to read. I read the words as I would read them in Polish. Most of the words I read sounded like a Mexican would pronounce them. I did not recognize most the words, but I was saying them correct. How about that?

Language / Polish or any Slavic language key to any other Slavic languages? [126]

I think it is true for most languages. If you speak Italian you are more likely to understand Spanish, if you are polish you will understand more Slavic languages. Most of them anyway. If you are from the Anglo-Germanic brood, you should pick up words accordingly.

See the ugly words above? I understand them even tough the last time I had a homework in Russian was in the 70-s.

Food / Pierogi recipe and filling from my grandmother [179]

I grew up in Poland, but I never made pierogi or goloabki myself. They require a lot of work. Besides, I lost my Mom early and had nobody to teach me how to do that.

There are tons of Polish Deli's in Chicago who make them just great! Works for me.

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

Did anyone hear the expression "pinda grochowa"? It usually said about a silly woman. However, saying "ty pizdo" to w woman is very insulting.

"My family likes to use dupa yosh (josz in Polish maybe) and goovno (guwno?)."

It is simply "dupa Jas". Dupa Jas is a dummy.

Love / Polish Girls vs Russian Girls [813]

Geeez, people - chill out. There is no need for anger or insults. Just have your opinions and move on.
...Polish woman or Russian...or German, or English, or Italian - just a matter of taste in looks. All of us end up in the bedroom and in the kitchen anyway!!! And it is fun to be there. Smile. Laugh. Love. :)

Life / Alcohol problems of Polish people [141]

I don't think polish people drink any MORE than other nationalities. They however drink different: mostly on the weekends and to get drunk. I work in American corporate environment and sometimes we go out for drinks. Well, they drink like fish and get pretty loud. In general, most Americans have a drink or two (maybe more) just about everyday. Especially the older ones living alone.
