You're right McCoy. I wanted to compile a list of less well known attractions in Poland (even Elblag was pushing it a little).

Wieliczka is VERY well know and so didn't make the list.

Exactly, although only secret in so much as Western tourists are concerned. In my opinion Wieliczka is well known outside out Poland whereas Kosciuszko Mound is well known amongst Poles but not so much with people from outside the country

Be careful BT haven't excluded that particular tel no as a "banned tel no". Use it once and then check your phone bill to see if you have been charged.

There are several telephone companies offering calls at 1 per minute to Poland. There was one offering calls at 0.05p a minute but I think that has been blocked now.

Another option is Skype. For around £ 4.00 a month you can call any landline in Poland free of charge using your broadband connection.

Come on guys.

It isn't Kaczynski's fault that he's being buried at Wawel-he obviously didn't request it. His brother has a lot to answer for and his first major decision since the crash doesn't bode well for the future. A dignified retreat from politics would have won him much more respect but it appears he may try to cash in on the sympathy vote.

The decision to bury them at Wawel is an awful one in my opinion. It simply wasn't necessary. People wouldn't have batted an eyelid if Powadzki was the chosen location so whoever agreed to this has made a decision that did NOT need to be made and in turn made it very controversial.

Now instead of Poland being able to mourn it's loss it will stir up people's political and personal feelings against the Kaczynskis.

How sad.

By saying LK shouldn't be buried at Wawel isn't a sleight on his character.

99.99 % of Poles shouldn't be buried at Wawel which makes it all the more astonishing that LK and his wife will be.

I'd rather see Lech Walesa be buried there (when he's dead of course) as at least he was a Polish and international icon in his day.

Well I don't believe you should be lambasted for not crying (if that's what you mean) but if you're indifferent about that happened last Saturday then in my opinion that is a little cold.

It wasn't just LK who died on that plane. His wife was well respected and that's before we move onto the military leaders, clergy, relatives of Katyn victims, stewardesses and pilots.

James86 and others, I think you're missing the point somewhat. It's not about whether LK was respected or not. There will never be a consensus so it's pointless arguing. In fact, it should be in bad taste to argue that point now but unfortunately the decision to bury him at Wawel is going to sadly spark that very debate and as ADSAD put it "It's very sad they didn't let us mourn almost 100 victims in peace."

I'm in the UK and this decision is like having Gordon Brown buried at Westminster Abbey !

Come on Bolek. I respect your opinion because you're entitled to have one AND to express it so please also respect mine.

My "thinking" is simply different to yours, that doesn't make it "narrow and misguided". The President may well have been a "hero" to some of the country but your generalisations are inaccurate as the country is not united in that belief.

Saying the President died whilst in the line of duty is a little dramatic I think. He wasn't the only person to die in that plane crash and the nature of someone's death shouldn't be a criteria for being buried at Wawel. As another poster very eloquently put it, "would LK still be buried at Wawel if he died if a heart attack" ?

I am not trying to stir up trouble, in fact, you're doing that by putting words into my mouth.

Stop jumping up and down and just accept that your opinion and views are not held universally.

When you say the President was elected by the majority of the people do you mean the the majority of the people who actually bothered to vote or do you mean the "majority of the electorate". To be pedantic, if it's the former then the President wasn't elected by the majority of the people-he just got more votes than the other candidate.

If the President didn't want a US state then why was he so receptive to having the US missile shield based on Polish soil ?

I wouldn't normally rise to the bait but I'm on my lunch break and can't think of anything better to do.

Is the museum on the same site where the prison was located or was the prison building demolished ? Sorry for my ignorance.

I've been to the Uprising Museum and I was very impressed. One small complaint is that my elderly mother struggled to read many of the notes attached to the exhibits due to the "atmospheric" and rather gloomy lighting. A pity that many of the people who actually lived through this era may struggle to fully enjoy the museum but that is only a minor complaint.

I have a real interest in visiting places in Warsaw heavily connected to WW2.

I've stayed at the Polonia twice and this hotel has class whilst all the other luxury hotels in Warsaw are glass and steel.

It was the only hotel left standing in Warsaw after the war and Eisenhower stayed there. The place has class coming out of every pore and I love staying there.

I'm a little baffled by Wroclaw Boy's statement as it's not possible to "sit outside" the Polonia as it opens onto the pavement (sidewalk)-perhaps they have an outdoor cafe since I was last there but I don't think there's enough space.

My mother was at several DP camps after the war including Fallingbostel. She was also at Braunschweig, Barum (where my brother was born), Marienborn and about ten others.

Her memories are fond ones. She recalls how they use to hang a curtain across the room to separate their living quarters from the rest of the barracks and how there would be dances every week with accordionists etc.

She also said the reason they were moved so many times is that the authorities didn't want the refugees to get too comfortable in one place and in a way wanted people to repatriate themselves.

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone with similar experiences.

I really don't like this "sharing of the egg".

Unlike Wigilia, this is rather a messy affair, eating part of an egg and then sharing the other part with someone who still has egg in their mouth...yuck !

It's even worse if the other person happens to have a moustache or beard and pieces of egg get lodged in there !
