Feedback / Alterations of thread titles - automatic or moderated? [10]

Users clicking on topics are more important than users creating topics. I will remember it.

One user creates a topic; hundreds or thousands may read it. Who wins? :)

Thanks, I didn`t see it before.

It's been there for about 8 years now.

But I wonder why are they used so selectively? Sticking to certain rules (resulting with changing titles of my threads, even in off topic section) looks odd in comparison to ignoring other rules in the PF.

I spent the last several days going through thousands of topics to make sure the titles are correct. I haven't gone through the Off-topic yet. But now, since Off-topic has become available also to non-logged users, we'll enforce relevant topic titles there too. So you're right that we didn't care too much about topic titles in the Off-topic section in the past, but that's going to change.

To sum up, it all sounds very disappointing to me as I am not allowed to start and develop threads as I wish.

When you create a new thread, you are supposed to be like a reporter. A reporter's goal is to present the content in a logical, relevant, and easy to follow way. Would you read a newspaper that feature titles like: "Funny!", "Weather", "Good one", "Problem", "War", "Winning", "Pitty" etc.? I'm sure you would not. Then put yourself in the position of your readers too. That way everybody will be happy :

What the f...k?

Why a user who is not interested in the topic would be required to click on the topic just to find out it's not interesting to him or her?

Feedback / Attendance on PF. How is it possible that forum has from 15-20 new users every day? [42]

Of course, some of them are google robots combing the net. They often come in waves and also count as guests! :):):)

The count on PF doesn't include 'robots' because they don't use cookies (required to be counted as a guest). If there are some big spikes of guest visitors, most likely someone posted a link to PF from a very high traffic website (like digg or a news article).

Polonia / Protect Andrei Poczobut (a journalist) against prosecution by the Belarusian dictatorship [4]

PolishForums.com was asked to post this important announcement in the name of The Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ). Here it is:

---------------------

Dear friends,

My name is Uladzimir Hutkouski (Vladimir Gutkovskiy).
As a member of Belarusian Association of Journalists and American PEN I plea you to protect our colleague Andrei Poczobut against prosecution by the Belarusian dictatorship.

Vladimir Gutkovskiy, bigopenworldmagazine@yahoo

---------------------

The Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) calls on сivil and public association o the USA, international organizations, writers and human rights organizations to expre3ss solidariti with the Belarusian journalist Andrei Poczobut who is being charged with libel against the president Alexaqnder Lukashenka.

According to independent express assessment, Poczobut's aricles under consideration do not contain libel, but only criticize the policy of the Belarusian authorities.

On October 21, 2012 the criminal case against the Hrodna-based journalist Andrei Poczobut migtht be sent to court.

The correspondent of the Polish nevspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, BAJ member Andrei Poczobut is being charged with violation under article 367, part 2 of the Criminal Code of Belarus "Libel against the President of the Republic of Belarus". The case was startede by the Investigative Committee of Hrodna region in June 2012, based on a number of the journalist's publications online.

On June 21 the journalist's apartment was searched and his professional equipment was confiscated. The journalist spend a week in Hrodna detention center, up till June 30, and then was set free under recognizance not to leave the country.

The Belarusian Criminal Code provides for freedom restriction/imprisonment up to five years for such violation.

This term might be added up to the previous conviction that Andrei Poczobut got on July 5, 2011: the lournalist was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years' deferment under article 367, part 1 (libel against the president). The law stipulates that the journalist will surely serve the sentence if he breaks the law within the two years.

The public association "Belarusian Association of Journalists" empowers its member, who is also member of the American PEN-center, Uladzimir Hutkouski to report this information to interested people and organizations in the USA, international structures.

We ask you to express your attitude to the criminal prosecution of the journalist and demand from official Minsk to dismiss the criminal charges against the journalist Andrei Poczobut.

We will be extremely grateful for your solidarity with our colleague and with all people of Belarus whose freedom of expression is being more and more restricted by the authorities.

Best regardes,

chair of BAJ Zhanna Litvina

Feedback / No blanket statements on PF - clarification [134]

Admin - would it really be fine to say "Polacks don't have a clue about Poland" in your opinion?

As a sporadic comment - it is really fine. But not fine as a blank, repetitive statement whose goal is to make other posters upset.

All equally offensive as dumb Polacks.

Did I put the word 'dumb' near the word 'Polacks'? No. You used it in a derogatory way and that's what we won't tolerate. If you only used the word 'Polack' it would be fine. Same with the word 'Jew' or 'Paki.' What makes the difference is putting dumb words like you did in front of them. Playing games won't rescue you from getting banned.

Admin,if some one doesn't like to be called that, then they should let others know.I myself am not offended by that. It's when someone puts dumb in front of it and an s after the k that I find it offensive.

Exactly. It's like going back to kinder garden. If you REACT to what a bully says, you are a victim. Then it's easy to control you. If you don't react or take it as a joke (most 'racist comments' are actually used in a joking way), YOU are in control. It's simple as that. I don't know why most people are so easily manipulated by bullies using meaningless words.

But you have some Polish-Americans on here calling themselves Polack - does it mean that it's okay for us to use it, too?

For me, it is OK to use the word 'Polack' on PolishForums (as long as there is no pattern saying that the poster's agenda is to discredit Poland or Polish nation as a whole). I personally don't find this word offensive despite the fact I'm Polish.

Do you think it's possible to use words like "paki" and "limey" without being racist in any context except when quoting someone?

There was a movie where two British Pakistani people jokingly called each other 'paki.' IF the word 'paki' is not racist for THEM, it is not racist for me, either. Why should it be? Should I claim to know their culture more than they do?

Ban racist statements full stop, regardless of reason.

It is very possible to use 'racist words' without being a racist. Moderators can determine if there's a pattern and the context of the message.

Exactly. It depends 100% on moderators' personal taste (that's why not everybody can be a moderator). There's no other way (unless we make the forum pre-moderated and send each post to a judge who would approve or disapprove it). Or maybe you have another idea.

Perfect, although we need to talk about the word "continuously" here. How often is "continuously"? 3 times, 4 times, 100 times? What's your take on this?

If someone wonders if the word 'continuously may apply to him/her - it is usually a good indication that he/she may be banned.

we're all sick to death of reading crap like "the racist nation of Israel" and whacko conspiracy theories involving Jews.

If you want to know, you and 'Harry' are on top of the list to be suspended. Being smarty pants won't let help you guys much this time.

Will this change now?

Freedom of speech will never change on PF. But if there is a pattern suggesting that a forum user is continuously posting blank racist or derogatory statements against a nation or a group of people, such user will be permanently suspended.

Feedback / Look alike screen names - is it allowed in PF? [15]

A very strange question indeed.

Agreed ;)

I was wondering if PF allows look alike screen names

Yes.

I think its a pretty grey area where a judgement has to be very carefull..

A 'look-alike' name is not equal to 'the-same-name.' Mods have means to distinguish that quickly and 100% accurately. You may also hover on username and check the registration date.

Feedback / How about Helped Somebody feature ? [9]

Who could click on 'He helped me' button? Only a topic starter, I guess (if all then soon the number could be meaningless, ie. too big..).

Feedback / An efficient (accurate?) way to search these forums (or how to google-search this website) [16]

Or is there a fast way to search and find the thread that I am looking for that I don't know about?

So you don't know what you want to search for? Your message suggests you actually want the information to be provided for you (like news etc.) so that you just consume it without critical thinking. What if the provided information is intentionally misleading.

News / Controlling the internet ACTA in Poland (Like SOPA) [34]

Some people say that Boycott
google.com/search?q=define%3Aboycott - not wars or violent demonstrations - will be the key to successfully fight for your rights in the future. If people are united, there's nothing that can defeat it. It is reported to work well both online and offline ;).

News / Controlling the internet ACTA in Poland (Like SOPA) [34]

Have a look at the top of this page. Particularly the name of this forum.

Ditto :

And yet no big discussion about ACTA here:) Even and especially it is about Poland.

If you check some archive posts, my position about it has been clear from day one (ie. PF = freedom of speech). Some people argued how inappropriate it may be, but if nothing is done soon they will be the ones to cry to go back to the free Internet. Hopefully it won't be too late.

however it could be an end to downloading films and music

I wouldn't worry about films and music AT ALL (even though this actually helps some people to wake up because when they see a blank screen they start to think what's going on ;). You should worry about self-censorship (ie. you will not post truly what you think because you'd be afraid of being detained).

Feedback / Quote attribution name removed and tested :) [116]

Did Admins/Mods explain the change of the quote attribution name policy?

It was explained right at the very beginning - see the last word of the thread title.
