Language / Terms of endearment in Polish [222]

every Pole feels entitled to his or her own version and its ad hoc contortions.

Yes and no. Those contortions you mean are basically a parody of infant`s first utterings. Boo - boo, goo - goo, are the easiest sounds to produce. Foo foo is more difficult that is why it isn`t in the list that you proposed.

That is why we can say bubuś to a baby but not fufuś. Do you get the drift?
Have you ever taken care of a baby longer than on hour, e.g,, when your wife was ill or sth? Probably not. :):):)

Yes, bubuś is a good one for a small child. I read it in the Polish translation of Le Petit Nicolas stories.

Language / Terms of endearment in Polish [222]

This shows again that there is no standard Polish language

There is, of course, but not only. Poland is big enough to host a dozen dialects. It is perfectly natural that living in southern Poland I didn`t know about positive meaning of bubek in Silesia.

Genealogy / Looking for two cities likely in Poland 1882/1883 [6]

Oh, Danes? I thought they were Jewish coz you mentioned Latvia. There was a huge immigration of Jews into partitioned Poland at the end od 19th century. After they were expulsed by Russian tsars, mainly from the Baltics, they settled in Polish cities.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

I wouldn't use 'some'

Yes, fortunately, it was just an example. But if it was an exam sentence, one might question it. My two kids got to the final stage but only after heated arguments with the examining body over the key answers which are usually very limited and strict. I had to prove with examples that certain usages were appropriate. That gave us additional 2, 3 points and we scraped through. I still keep tonnes on past papers that we had done in preparation. But it was worth it - thanks to points from Olimpiada, they were accepted into prestigious high schools.

Primary school exam is still easier than the previous junior high school one.

See pages from old junior high, the last stage. The third page shows a history quiz about American Natives.

that the requirements have gone insane in the last couple of years?

The requirements have been steadily going insane for years - but it is natural coz so have some kids` knowledge of the language. Now, the grammar issues are almost the same as at high school advanced exam.

he primary school exam was bordering on impossible,

Not really. Primary school exam is still easier than the previous junior high school one.

Hey, Dirk and Novi, how about doing a little translation exercise from primary school Olimpiada??? :):):)

You are right except that airport - no, it is displayed in a regular Natural H. museum.

Now, it is the first time in the history of riddle threads that I don`t know what I am showing you. I took that pic at the pet exhibition. What is this species?

Life / Covid vaccination for foreigners in Poland? [26]

If the reports are true that only 20% of medics signed up for it,

Yes, they are true. Most people I talk to are sceptical about getting it. The government will have to make vaccinations mandatory.

You mean boobek uttered as in book? Then I have no good news for you. Bubek is a pejorative word in Polish.

You're making way to many unnecessary corrections

Of course not. :):) My corrections are always perfect.

Are you kidding, pawian?

Of course not. I seldom kid in the forum. Don`t forget I am a serious and strict teacher.

presumably made by the student..

Yes,. maf, you are the only one who read and understood what I had written. Dirk and Novi should go back to school coz they can`t read properly. Or to an ophthalmologist coz their eyesight is very poor.

Funny. hahaha
Here you are:

showing two pages with the student`s comments and translation.

PS. Besides, do you really think my hand writing is so neat??? hahahaha

I do see a mistaken sentence about Britney Spears

Blame it on a British site which was used to provide that info about celebrities.

while previously you called her Diego,

Of course not. I see your dementia is even bigger than Trump`s. :):) I didn`t call any cat Diego, it was my student`s choice and I simply accepted it for granted coz respecting students is one of my priorities in education.

My student called him Diego .

See???

Nope. I don`t need one. I am under special protection anyway and no artificial preventive measures are necessary in my case. The :Polish saying: złego diabli nie biorą perfectly applies to me. hahahahaha

There is a town called Lubsko but it belonged to Germans 1700-1945 so your Jewish ancestors probably didn`t settle there.

Besides, a location in Poland can`t bear the sole name of Lubski - it sounds as an adjective.

Law / Advantages of getting married in Poland. [13]

Why is it easier to get mortgage in Poland if you are married?

Because a couple has a bigger chance to pay it off than a single person. A couple with kid/kids will be even more motivated to pay it off.

while previously you called her Diego, which sound Polish

I forgive you your ignorance about the usage of Diego in the Polish language coz you lost real contact with it long ago. Focusing solely on the Polish literature from 19th century and exploiting that old style in the forum certainly contributes to your lack of awareness that Diego has been heavily rooted in the Polish language due to various heroes or celebrities who bear/bore that first name and who have been widely known here.

Whereas, Midnight or Black Pearl are still pure English words so stop persuading me to use them coz it would sound really foolish. Do you want to pass for a fool? Certainly not.

Every year I tutor two, three students to English Olimpiada competition, either primary or high school. Those are extremely difficult exams. The second stage of primary school one includes the knowledge of social, cultural, historical, geographical etc facts about English speaking countires. This year it is famous people in the USA and Great Britain. Look at the pics showing two pages (out of a dozen) with the student`s comments and translation.

Sorry, Pres Trump is not included. Those Polish treachers!! Libtards! hahahaha

Thanks a lot for the help! :)

You`re welcome. It was my pleasure too coz I have learnt sth new. I am so old and have lived in this country for so long but there are still things which I had no idea of. It is really fascinating to discover new trends and styles.

Life / What do Poles really think about cats? [470]

So as almost the rightful owner, I rename her Midnight or, better yet, Black Peral.

hahaha the cat is located in Poland so she needs a Polish name. Midnight sounds silly for a name. I like that Black Pearl but it is too long, nobody would use both words, so calling her only Pearl would entail the loss of an important feature. Czarnusia is the best right now. Who told you it is common? I had dozens of animals and none was called like that. One black tomcat I had as a boy was called Murzyn.

Real Estate / Very cheap apartments for sale in Lodz - am I missing something? [16]

So what happens after you pay that money?

The last explanation: you are expected to do the renovation, that is why the rent is generally lower than for other flats of a similar size. However, you can`t demand the refund of the renovation costs if you decide to leave the flat.

Check sites with this wording: mieszkanie za odstępne.

E.g,.
regiodom.pl/portal/zakup-nieruchomosci/zakup-nieruchomosci-i-dokumenty/odstepne-za-mieszkanie-co-takiego-jak-wyglada-pr

kind of like poland right?

I see you suffer from some past mental injuries. Has Poland wronged you so much? hahahaha

You can negotiate the rent which is provided in the add. You also need to negotiate the terms of terminating the contract - suppose you invest a lot into renovation and two years later the owner decides to dissolve the contract.

Generally, it is a tricky business.

You usually pay 10.000 to the previous tenant who "invested" some money

That is one option. Another is that you pay directly to the owner for the privilege of being registered officially at the address.

So what happens after you pay that money?

You are allowed to rent the property. The contract might ensure you pay the same rent for 3 years. etc.

Real Estate / Very cheap apartments for sale in Lodz - am I missing something? [16]

if it is actually the sale of an apartment?

It is not the sale, but still renting. You don`t own that property which is in a private tenement house. You usually pay 10.000 to the previous tenant who "invested" some money in it and expects a refund/compensation from a candidate for a new tenant, namely you. It is a bit twisted, indeed. :)
