History / What Poland expected from western Europe? [78]

the dysfunction of modernity.

Which applied to every invention that humans made in history. Fire was used to burn your enemies` dwellings, wheels were used for the torture of the wheel, planes were used in air warfare etc. Only penicillin wasn`t used in the wrong way.

Does it mean we should drop modernity coz humans have tendency to misuse it?

History / We Remember: Cold War Warrior and True Pole Michał Franciszek Goleniewski [22]

to help diminish the bloodstained totalitarian communist system

Really? For 15 years he was an appreciated and promoted member of the most brutal organisation ever created - communist secret service. He had blood of hundreds of Polish patriots on his hands. Do you want to read the list of tortures they used to force their victims to give false evidence against themselves and others?? They not only tortured, they also murdered their victims.

He defected not because he wanted to abolish the system. He lost privileges, power and high earnings after the political thaw in 1956. He needed to find another source of benefits and encouraged by previous defections of his mates, he chose the West.

It is you which is supporting and endorsing the worst crimes of communism now.

Admit you hadn`t checked his background when you cried out Hurra in the op. Now it is too late.

What else will you say to defend that communist criminal?

The very least you could do is get yourself tested

That`s good advice.

So, Yozz, if you show a certificate with negative result and offer a good story in simple English, I think there is a great chance they will buy it.

Work / Black English Teacher going to Wroclaw [247]

This is why I voted brexit - Fed up of racist Poles.

Why are you so frigging selfish??? Instead of going to the UK and staying there, those racists will remain in Poland and spread their stupid views. You are even a bigger racist than they are. Shame on you, egoistic xenophobe!

And it was going so nicely - all petty rascals and jobless losers from my housing estate vanished one by one and gradually moved to the UK. Now we will have to deal with them again.

Shame, shame on you, Brits. You have disappointed me greatly.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

I see. So, hints will come in handy.

It is not metal. Sth else. It is veeeery big. You can`t travel in a vehicle, it is impossible and even forbidden but you can walk in and out.

Yes, very good, near the door. What kind of facility with such a door can it be - I mean - what is its function? In general, nothing specific now. And also think what can be inside that shallow hole at the top of the pipe. You just mentioned this item in your post.

No, the pics aren`t on canvas. Sth else but now it will be easy coz you know what I meant.

Nobody knows that. If you show them your eyes full of tears and beg for being allowed entry, they might let you through. Poles are kind-hearted people and it is easy to move them. But you certainly need a good credible story to prove your travel is essential. There might be a problem with their understanding it, though.

You can try to perform this act first:

History / We Remember: Cold War Warrior and True Pole Michał Franciszek Goleniewski [22]

that Goleniewski betrayed his own country

Well, that`s a similar controversy as Colonel Kukliński`s case. Half people believe he was a traitor, the other - a hero.

The case with Goleniewski is a bit different, though. Kukliński was always a soldier, officer in the army, while Goleniewski began and continued his career in communist secret services. Those were the worst thugs who did their best to brutally deal with any opponent of the regime - real or imaginary. Goleniewski defected in 1959 so it means he worked and got promoted to top positions in secret services for 14 years. In 1953 Stalin died, in 1956 the thaw began in Poland and hardened Stalinist communists lost power. The once-powerful secret services were put under strict control and ceased to be such a lucrative place. It took Goleniewski 3 years to decide to take his lover with him and find a new comfortable place in the West.

All in all, his work for communist secret service and his later antics with that Tsarevich imposture provoke a lot of doubt about his "heroism. " That is why I said the OP didn`t know what and who it was talking about.

I'm just a little bit concerned that I'm going to have trouble at customs.

Yes, your worry is justified. They won`t let you in if they stick to the EU post brexit procedures . I am sorry.

UK nationals and non-EU/EEA nationals resident in the UK or another non-EU/EEA country will not be permitted entry to Poland from 01 January 2021 for non-essential purposes due to EU-wide COVID-19 restrictions.

Check it at the best and most credible source here: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/poland

So, flying from Dublin won`t help coz you carry a British passport, right? Will you be able to prove that the purpose of your journey is essential? E.g., family connections? Yes, you can try to lie but if you run into pedantic eager beavers, they might want to check your info. .

History / We Remember: Cold War Warrior and True Pole Michał Franciszek Goleniewski [22]

Why is it that the most extreme acts of stupidy are always committed by white Western men?

We haven`t mentiond an equally interesting thing about him. He claimed that he was Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich who was miraculously saved during the massacre of the Tsarist family in 1917. Goleniewski also claimed to have information about Tsarist money.and he met female Tsarist family claimants. .

Hurra!!!

I see there is heavy drinking in your place now. :):)
I hope you know that Goleniewski had been a faithful Stalinist before he defected to the West. Later, when he gave away some Soviet spies in the West, Western intelligence still suspected him of working on Kremlin orders. Soviets intended to discredit top leaders of Western intelligence and Goleniewski was a tool to achieve this goal when he accused them of being Soviet moles.

Most probably, you don`t really know what and who you are talking about. As usual.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

It looks to be high up as I can see lighting.

Yes, a street lamp! Well, so we know that object is in the street. Also, consider the material it is made of. What exactly? Now, think, what kinds of objects that size and of that material can be placed in streets or close to them?

a metal tube/pipe with what looks like the remains of concrete casing

Yes, but it is not a common metal and not concrete but sth nobler, namely granite. Besides, look at the site - where is it placed? A hint: the pipe has a hole but it doesn`t go through the whole pipe - it is only about 10 cm deep. Why? What is there in that shallow hole?

you take deliberately misleading photos for use in your riddles ;)

Most of the time - I don`t think about it when I take them. It only applies to about 10% of my photos.

Those images don't look as if they've been projected either.

They were sort of projected, if we use the correct word correctly., namely to visualise sth on a surface. What kind of surface?

Life / What do Poles really think about cats? [470]

You have one strange cat!

Yes, but it only adds to the general fun we have with her.

The whole situation with our cats reminds me of a popular cartoon series about young tomcat Filemon and old experienced, even jaded tomcat Bonifacy who, between his numerous naps, explains the world to Filemon.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

I can't see me rushing to try them to be honest.

hahahaha You are like my kids when very young. They also used to refuse some innovative ideas from me and prefered to rely on the traditional Polish cuisine of my wife. Only with age did they become more open for new tastes. E..g, I taught them to ear sushi, though initially they couldn`t even look at it without disgust.

I put home-made chilli jam in my fish finger sandwich at lunch.

Reminds me of sweet buns with ham topping which I microwaved.

They just look like pics most probably taken with a digital camera

Taken, yes. But not developed in the traditional way that old photos were or digital ones are today. Simply speaking, what are the pics made of?

Travel / Do Poles like to hunt? Hunting in Poland. [211]

I was just wondering what polands view on hunting is

Divided, just like everywhere. Some Poles think it is needless cruelty, some are indifferent, others support it.

and if they actually do hunt in poland and if its popular.

Hunting is posh among well-off males. I know a few lawyers, doctors, dentists, public servants who have chosen this activity coz it is fashionable in their circles. Costs of guns and annual fees to the local hunting lodge can be high.

It has just occured to me: hunting animals, especially such a big game as deer etc does require certain dose of cruelty in your psyche. It seems some people are born with it and they need to regularly let it out. . Isn`t it better if they kill animals within the law and have their natural cruelty under control rather than they use it against other people, also injuring or killing them in worst cases?

That is why I am not against hunting - let it be.

Hey, did you know about this old Polish custom - your first hunt is celebrated as a special event and your face is smeared with the blood of the animal you shot. I also read about this custom in books about Poland in the past.

Life / What do Poles really think about cats? [470]

Everything else was Satan's project.

Yes, also cows coz they can transfer mad cow disease onto us. And bulls too coz they are used in corrida which is a good reason for human participants of it to go straight to hell for useless torturing and killing innocent animals.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

That's what I find strange about your food combinations.

Not only you. But my poor wife already got used to it. hahaha

It wouldn't occur to me to fry them.

I buy a small container of stir and fry sprouts every week. As for their blandness - yes, when raw. But frying changes it into an interesting taste.

I recommend everybody to try it out - you won`t be disappointed.

Life / What do Poles really think about cats? [470]

maybe she will develop it later on.

It is probably some mental disfunction. The only sounds which resemble meow is when sb accidentaly trods on her in the kitchen.

Also, she doesn`t purr. But instead, when fancying caressing and stroking, she jumps onto my desk and performs a sort of step dance - I scratch her delicately and she dances. She is so funny - I can`t stop laughing whenever I see her. Getting that cat was 10.

snakes :)

Which are warm and dry and velvety, not cold and slippery.

Hopefully she won't move on to non-food items........

She eats strange things for a cat - e.g, cakes. My wife realised she mustn`t leave any newly baked cake on the kitchen table in fear of being devoured by the cat. I once played a joke on her and offered her a thick piece of cabbage from gołąbki - she wanted to eat it! She would if I didn`t take it away.

I also don't like snakes

Don`t be so cruel. Snakes are also God`s creatures. Look at her - isn`t she beautiful? And her belly is checkered black and white. What immortal hand or eye, dared frame her fearful symmetry?

Yes - ala Jewish. My mum taught me how to cook it - she had a lot of contacts with Jewish ladies who decided to stay in Poland after WW2.

Yes, Hawk! The war came too early and that modern plane didn`t take part in it.

What is it about that surprise??? :) It is a riddle whcih I can`t solve......

I clipped this photo a bit but you should know what it is.
