News / Poles say a big YES to our European Union [996]

Pilsudski's idea was actually Intermarium.

A step towards greater union. In his lifetime, a period torn by war, conflict and the growing threat of nationalism and fascism, people could only have dreamed of our European Union.

He looked firmly to the west.

I can't see any way for Poland to ever coexist with Russia

It could never be, without the larger and richer country terrorising the other - as they did. Hence Pilsudski and others seeing Poland's best interests as neither looking east nor 'splendid isolation', but looking very firmly westward.

It seems the 88% of Poles who support EU membership agree with that.

He would have clearly identified the European Union as a safety net against the two great powers, and the ability to tie up Germany economically without sacrificing the Polish identity would have been a huge thing for him.

Completely.

Pilsudski's brother was even more pro-European.

They both loathed the whole pan-Slavic Ciemnogrod thing.

He was a fascinating man - he always looked West, and would have been a huge supporter of our European Union.

The quote you mean is: "Do polityki garną się ludzie , którzy nic nie osiagnęli, a więc nieudaczniacy i darmozjady.
Polityka to dla nich deska ratunku, mogą godnie żyć nie dając w zamian nic ."

In English: "People who have never achieved anything, losers and freeloaders, are drawn to politics, Politics is like a a last resort for them; they can live with dignity giving nothing in return."

This is my favourite Pilsidski quote, about Russia.

"They are all more or less disguised imperialists, including revolutionists. The trait of these minds, always longing for the absolute, is a vivid centralism. They loathe varieties, cannot conciliate dissonances - such things dull their will and imagination to the extent that they cannot combine varieties into one whole; they reject even the idea of conscious social organizations. [...] Let everything happen by itself, vividly - that is the wisest solution according to them, because it is the simplest and the easiest. Which is why there are so many anarchists among them. A strange thing, but I have never met any republicans among Russians!"

but I wouldn't say that it will totally eliminate fighting violence wars etc.

It's certainly played its part.

Plus everyone's coming in w a hodgepodge of different ideas agendas traditions goals etc

One reason our EU works the way it does.

absolute bottom of the barrel.

It's basically a sinister cult, linked to right-wing Americans.

a bunch of total scumbags

A fair assessment.

I just hate to see my Slavic brothers and sisters fighting each other.

Our EU was formed after Europeans were fighting each other. So it will never happen again.

As for Poland's membership, I remember seeing Jan Nowak-Jezioranski interviewed after leaving church live on TV on the day of the referendum to join. He said he'd never imagined that he would live to see the day when Poland could join together with other free nations.

Work / Amway Poland - work - salary [18]

It's basically a giant scam t

Agreed. It isn't clear whether or not the OP has been offered a job in their office or been invited to take part in one of their schemes. I would hope that they don't hassle their clerks, receptionists etc to join the schemes, however I wouldn't put it past them.

the mind-control cult aspects are downright scary.

Agreed. I once attended one of their rallies. It reminded me of an American evangelical rally - the same language used, the same presentation techniques, the lot. When someone makes a pitch at you about Amway, they use the same sort of persuasion techniques as the sharpest sales people and worse.

that the way to make money was not by selling their detergents, but by recruiting lots of gullible people to do so and raking off a percentage of their sales

This is true - that's how it works. What Terri says is true as well.

Just about the only plus within the Amway movement doesn't work in Poland but has its uses in America. Remember the Amway suckers do it as self-employed (one of their buzzwords is 'independent business operator'). This means that Joe from New Jersey goes with his wife for a weekend to visit their aunty Mary in Ohio. They stay at a hotel there, eat meals on the way, and give an Amway pitch to aunty Mary's next door neighbour for ten minutes. This means that the entire trip, the hotel, the car hire, the petrol etc is a business expense - in effect a tax loss since the 3 dollars or whatever they make a month from Amway doesn't cover the losses.

In Poland of course, you can't get away with that.

You have to be careful. Amway's reputation is so poor that they use other trading names to draw suckers in - in fact, during the first few pitches they deliberately avoid the name Amway. 'Network 21' is one they use in Poland, others are 'Alticor'. 'Quixtar' and.

A sociologist described them as a "quasi-religious corporation having sectarian characteristics".

Law / Bus ticket fine in Poland (Warsaw) - what if I don't pay the fine? [36]

There are offices in several of the tube stations. Ratusz Arsenal, Centrum (in the mid level gallery between street level and platform level - use the central entrance if you're coming from the south), Pl. Wilsona and others.

There can be queues.

no market for something

The idea is to kill the market, before the 'market' kills the smokers.

You implied it heavily more than once, linking 'losses' to specific government programs

Nope, simply suggesting ways that society could use that amount.

When's the last time you heard of smuggled anteater meat in Poland?

You've never seen those ladies selling it in town? On ul. Poznanska.

No they don't contradict at all. Crime is opportunist, and you fail to (or ignore) the very significant difference between large and small scale smuggling.

Basically petty crime and serious crime.

I still say it's silly (and terrible policy) to count on a source of income one is trying to eliminate.

Who says they 'count on it'? They certainly appreciate fiscal revenues (society always does) however the excise duty is high for a reason other than revenue.

In fact they're talking about it today.

Which is on an island even further from mainland europe than Great Britain

As far as I know, the two countries work together on smuggling. As for getting it from NI to the rest of the UK, all lorries are checked on the ferry.

UK citizens

Fewer than you think buy tobacco smuggled in bulk. Nevertheless, one consignment, the one driven by the Polish guy, cost society a revenue of £2.5 million, enough to educate around 600 primary school kids per year.

Law / Bus ticket fine in Poland (Warsaw) - what if I don't pay the fine? [36]

What happens if i decide not to pay for that ticket

Are you from an EU country? If so pay it, or you will be hit by the costs of a Polish court decision and possibly court and enforcement costs in your home country. These are likely to be many times the cost of the original ticket.

should be able to keep contraband from coming through entry ports

They mostly do. The stakes are however so high that some people will always try doing it using often ingenious means.

some other way to get the money they currently get from tobacco taxes

That won't happen - the excise duty brings in much needed revenue as well as making the price of tobacco a deterrent.

It's response to a mistaken assertion.

It's also irrelevant. The demographics of 'central Asia and caucasus' don't impact on the problem of cigarette and alcohol smuggling from Poland into the UK, even in those cases where the contraband originates in Russia or the Baltics.

The loss of excise revenue (£2.5 million in this case alone) have an impact.

Life / What is Poland's view on obesity? How healthy, fit are Poles? [166]

Lonely and unloved Cartmans is actually a very apt description. Obese and neurotic millenials, people who think the internet is real and that food comes in packets and boxes.

The figures for this are soaring in Poland too. Interesting times ahead.

Life / What is Poland's view on obesity? How healthy, fit are Poles? [166]

There are even morbidly obese students, something you just didn't see even five years ago. Why is this happening?

There's a new study that's just been done among Canadians of Polish background, especially students (usually well-represented in studies done at universities) and the figures are shocking - there's a very high proportion of obesity, with all the health risks and effects on personality/self-esteem that obesity entails.

The evidence basically points to comfort eating as the main culprit, particularly junk food and high-carbohydrate meals. That and physical inactivity. The study talks about a vicious circle - basically they get fat, feel depressed about it, and eat more to try and make themselves feel better.

A significant proportion come from backgrounds where poor diet, depression and car dependence also led to obesity in other family members..

Poor diet, comfort eating and lack of exercise are basically making a generation with far too many lonely and unloved Cartmans. Something that is only storing up problems for society.

The soviet model remains

Yes. That and the Tsarist and post-Soviet mode tool. Very little to choose between them, and Russia (with the enthusiatic support of Russians in the Baltic) is the source of so much that is smuggled into Europe.

Much tougher action is needed against them, cutting off their export markets and depriving their authoritarian and corrupt regime of income.

police

I wonder what that £2.5 million in lost excise could have done for a local police force's budget.

The 1/2 price cigs can be purchased within a 5 10 minute walk in just about any direction from SkyTower in Wroclaw although I'm sure every city is different.

Yes, In Warsaw there's only one place near the centre where it's overt. Apart from that, you have to know that the little old lady with the stall or whatever has them.

In rural and suburban areas almost every kiosk

Again, not round Warsaw - the police etc are very keen on this.

bad liquor

With alcohol/cigs in large quantities, it tends to come through Poland rather than originate there. It looks like this is what happened with the lorry driver in the original post.

I've never been hassled by us customs they're more concerned about agriculture and drugs

If you look poor and have a large holdall bulging with carton shapes you're more likely to get pulled. Or getting off certain flights, often Dubai flights. These are two factors that increase the chance of being pulled. That and making journeys that are established cig smuggling runs.

In Poland counterfeit cigs have been popular since prl times

They sell them in the UK, often coming via Lithuania and Poland, sometimes from Belarus, hidden under containers of timber.

Some of the pics they put on packs are flat out disgusting lol I'm sure they've given more than 1 polish kid nightmares

They could have anything in them. Like that contraband Spiritus that they used to sell at Stadion. The yellow label always said "America's Finest Corn Spirit", basically moonshine from down near Rzeszów. Illegal, and society earned no excise revenue from it. A problem? A small one (unless you're a nurse waiting for her delayed wages) until there was a rogue batch contaminated by methanol and several people died.

Idk about Europe

A big penalty if you're a lorry driver - this guy got 3 years (to be fair it was tax evasion of £2.5 million). If you've just got a few hundred cartons in the boot of your car at Dover they'll seize it and either fine you or not, if you've got a suitcase full at the airport, the same. If you've got a couple of cartons extra and an extra litre or two of spirits (coming into Poland anyway) the stern lady says you must never do it again, winks at you and lets you through.

I think one out of three people smoke tobacco in Poland.

How much does a pack cost in Poland right now ?

It's really been falling over the past few years. When I first came to Poland, cigs were the (PLZ equivalent) of 2 or 3 zl a pack. Now it's about 16zl for Marlboro and not much less for the cheapies. The strongest ones (as in the rest of the EU) have been banned.

40zl+ in Britain. Here where I am now it's 4zl or less, not good for my lungs.

How's that worked out for

It hasn't been implemented anywhere - yet.

And.... it's very undemocratic

Such is life.

Your comments are odd today - nothing to do with the lorry driver caught smuggling - it just looks like you're trying to argue.

Pretty much.

That's not the prevalent view in the jurisdiction where the smuggler was caught. Anyway, he's got three years, which should help to deter others.

Government double think.

Or a joined up society. The salaries of the palliative care doctors and nurses have to come from somewhere.

Milk those tax cows! Yaaaahhoooooooo!

Excise revenues are part of society's income.

The revenue from jacked up prices can't be that important because the government itself is, in theory, trying to destroy that revenue stream entirely.

The opposite is true. As the number of smokers decreases, the revenue from remaining tobacco sales becomes more important. Not least to fund medical treatment for former smokers.

Hence anti-smuggling enforcement.

Perhaps you'd just prefer unrestricted sales.
