News / Thousands of Polish women attend Czarny Piątek rally in Warsaw [780]

It is "Prawicowyinternet" indeed, after all there is not such a thing like "Lewicowyinternet" on YouTube,

Indeed. Youtube is full of crap, quality commentary is usually found elsewhere. I ccopied those photos from JasonDmz's online news.

Can't say I've ever noticed likes or dislkes on Youtubs. Seems odd to go looking for them on the computer screen, or for that matter caring what the educationally disadvanteged click like or dislike about. Still, I suppose it's good that people like you have something else to do with their finger...

Woman aren`t machines and factories for children.

That's the whole point.

Man must be with them to give maximal support to them and to children

And that is up to the woman, how many kids she wants or whether she wishes to be single or partnered.

Yes, hopefully these new protests will have the same effect as they did back in 2016, when the earlier bill was dropped.

Yes. It certainly shows the strength of opinion about the issue.

News / Goodbye Sunday Shopping in Poland - Hello Electoral Reform [246]

It will be interesting on Sunday to see how crowded the shopping centres are

Jammed full of people probably. I suspect Saturday evenings will be quite busy from now on too.

P.S. I can't send you a PM, it said your inbox is full. Perhaps as full as Arkadia Mall next Sunday.

Travel / Warsaw weather in april? [13]

how many degrees can I expect on those days?

The weather tends to turn nice during April. It's cold there right now (a late winter) so it might not be an especially warm April. By mid April you should be OK with a jacket in the evening. Bring some teeshirts to wear under your shirt just in case.

Never reveal your identity on the internet.

Or obfuscate; it's common sense.

News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1539]

those are only allegations

Formal ones, and the German prosecutors have confirmed they're looking at others.

"Scholars disagree about the degree of involvement of the Blue Police in the rounding up of Jews.

It looks like there were plenty of exceptions to the rule in that chaotic period. Certainbly the events at Slonim are very well documented, with eyewitness accounts.

I smell a rat here.

I don't think there's anything suspicious here, any agendas. Just the prosecutors finishing off their jobs before time makes it impossible.

Personally, I think there should be a moratorium now, whetrher the war criminals are German, Polish, Ukrainian, whatever; they're all (the few that are alive) past 90 years old and it's time to move on. War crimes prosecutors should concentrate oin the American baby-killers of My Lai now, before that becomes too late.

Indeed. I hope further reporting of the issue will make it clear that he is a Pole who was accused of war crimes. The prosecutors say there are other cases that they are investigating, which (given that age means they could be among the last people prosecuted for war crimes during the Holocaust) will receive a lot of opublicity, whatever their nationality.

News / Goodbye Sunday Shopping in Poland - Hello Electoral Reform [246]

Zoo is/used to be an odd station (due in part to its post-war history, legally belonging to East Germany but physically in the West, hence). Friedrichstrasse, Alexanderplatz and Hauptbahnhof all have decent-ish supermarkets.

I wonder if this would be possible in Poland; there's a supermarket in the underpass at Dworzec Centralny (every bit as grimy and noisy as the Berlin ones) that could make a lot of money on Sundays if they are exempt from the ban.

Why not shops across the border in Germany, too?

Yes, Maf is right; Germany is quite old-fashioned on Sunday shopping; it's allowed with certain conditions only.

I remember arriving in Berlin once on Sunday afternoon and being surprised/disappointed that most stores were closed

I had the same about currency exchange once. Everywhere was closed, even the exchange booths in large hotels in the area we were visiting.

As for the supermarkets in Berlin stations, these are open (as are small/medium sized shops), and sometimes the station ones are the best. I noticed a little while ago that they've started locking spirits up in glass cabinets. A nuisance since you've got to find someone to unlock them. I always come back from Berlin loaded up with German liqueurs and wine so this means it adds time to the shopping at the station. Travellers to Warsaw should remember to allow a bit longer to do this.

Case closed!

There isn't a case to close, except in your mind.

Anyway, the thread's about the current fiasco around Sunday shopping. One unintended beneficiary is going to be shops across the border in Czech; people in border areas will just drive over as they used to when currency exchange rates and lower alcohol tax made it favourable to do so.

Another beneficiary will be online food retailers; there are several already.

Those who lose most will be families where retail work, especially Sunday overtime, is financially important to them.

Post the references here

It isn't a debating society, and you're asking for something that is off topic. Stop stirring things.

Perhaps you should go and do some Sunday shopping instead, providing you can find somewhere that's legally open.

Wrong. The law specifically restricts operations to those who work under their own name and who issue receipts in their own name

Exactly. All loopholes have been looked at very carefully. The wife of the PiS posel was breaking the law.

I really googled it and got no results.

I found references to it in under a second. Perhaps you should up your game online.

Owners can be legally paid for there work and be a hired staff.

In this case, the newspaper in question considered it a significant enough breach of the new regulations to report on it.

PiS have always been known for their utter hypocrisy, and this is just yet another example of it.

A glaring example, since the posel in question wants the existing laws to be even tighter so no trading can happen

it's his responsibility to provide a link or accept that maybe

Since this isn't a debating society or an academic forum, there's no responsibility to do anything at all, as well you know.

News / Goodbye Sunday Shopping in Poland - Hello Electoral Reform [246]

It turns out that the wife of a PiS posel opened her shop all day (with hired staff). When a journalist who went there phoned up for comments, first she denied it had been open, then she claimed it was open for 5 minutes for a 'special customer' only, then when the journalist told her she'd bought things there, she said it was actually open for 15 minutes, and then when challenged, refused to speak.

Her husband is one of the strongest proponents of the ban on Sunday trading.

He always knows best

In this case yes. I'm surprised you don't remember.

since it's got Polska in its name, there must have been some, right

Really? It certainly did have one, quite well publicised at the time. Corruption.

You can always pretend it didn't.

Personally I rarely go shopping on Sundays, however for busy families, especially where they have to be elsewhere on Saturday, Sunday shopping is a good thing.

There used to be an action called Teraz Polska

Wasn't there a scandal about that organisation?

it's hard for me to get toooo worked up about it, a day without consuming.... oh my god the sky is falling!

Pretty hard for some families who work through the week.

Some Polish pasta is okay, but it tends to go from undercooked to overcooked and soggy in the blink of an eye.

It's the type of flour used. Works well in soup.

The funny part is that work inspectors.......are forced to work on Sundays to make sure the new law isn't broken :)

Sometimes even bad situations have their dry comedy...

Only the ostentatious would, Dolno.

There used to be a bar in the middle of Park Skaryszewski, one that had a big summer-only building next to it with a bar and dancing. Sometimes at weekends the clientele would be mainly Polish Gipsy. Always dressed up very well, and plenty of dancing to modern and traditional music. It was a great place to go; I wonder if it's still there.

Yet oddly enough, never have. Perhaps you look like a target.

they marginalized themselves as is oft the case with groups

If it was as simple as that...

Not a bad song (though I prefer the obvious Krawczyk one). They do know how to party, and to be invited to one of their celebrations is a delight and an honour.

I know a few Poles with part gypsy roots.

Some look identical to the rest of the population. There's a long and rich tradition of music.

Despite being often marginalised by other groups who live in the same territory, they hold fast to their traditions. They can often be very welcoming people, less dour than some of their neighbours.
