News / New European Council's report: "Poland oasis of racism, xenophobia and homophobia" ... [343]

Kids see, notice, and are curious about everything.

And don't seem to care about different sorts of couples, or need any sort of special explanation. Only very screwed up people get worked up about that.

They are not a "couple"

They are the judge of that. Not you.

two men french kissing

In all my years, I've never noticed that in the street. Most people don't pay much close attention to courting couples anyway anyway. Do you film couples kissing and petting too or just stare at them?.

Quality of life is higher in all those cities than it is in Poland.

Yes. The three you mentioned are all places people want to go to. I like Warsaw, for it's scale, it's cultural scene, because it's home and because most of our friends are there. Outside Warsaw? Not so much. Still, I sometimes think I'd move to Paris in a shot if I could sell up and buy somewhere the same size/quality.

The RM sock puppet is getting embarrassingly stupid now.....his owner needs to turn him off before he makes a complete fool of himself. ...

Look like that, isn't it. Either a sock puppet playing an act, or someone particularly bitter at life.

Or explaining to a 10-year-old why those two men are holding hands and kissing.

Because they're a couple. Kids usually don't think twice about it. Hpw much explaining would anyone need to do...

Real Estate / Apartment rental in Poland: Termination of the agreement before the date [27]

which is easy and dont take long either

Not that easy, and such cases can be spun out for a very long time, almost ad infinitum. Plus, it would be a very bad idea for any 'landlord' to even think about it unless they've declared every last penny of income from that flat. And far from all of them, to say the least, have declared even a groat.

Off-Topic / Russophiles can no longer defend their beloved Russians. [84]

Nice way to give up on an argument you have lost

Exactly. Russia is laughed at by the whole world. Even Ukraine who they're invading with fake 'rebels' is holding off their invasion and laughing.

Soon they'll have no spies left, so many are being unmasked by easy investigation.

certainly better for the Polish market than those 'tesla' things. There's nothing they can do that others can't do better.

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [871]

besides the women and girls raped by the Russians in Berlin

Yes. And in Poland too. In both places on an almost industrial scale and condoned by the leaders.

The big difference is that (mostly) Germans have come to terms with the tragedies of the past. The Russians have not yet come to terms with their collective responsibility for crimes against humanity.

Shows what you know

Rather a lot, if you'd paid attention to the clause after the comma.

Not buying it

It's not for sale to you, and yes, cousin marriage is decreasing steadily.

some weirdo progressive idea

The NHS being for all, without conditions and free to use? If that's 'weirdo progressive', I'm happy with that.

Remember this thread is about Polish Roma. If you want to rant about your views on people of other cultures, there's doubtless oyrhe threads for that.

Personally, I'll be happy if Cindylou89 finds her roots. Roma, Sinti and Kal people in Poland and around have a rich and often tragic history. She doesn't say what country she's in, however people from those countries have emigrated around the world.

That's off topic, however our NHS is for everyone, smokers, fatties, drug users, inbreeders of every background. In that background you feel the need to reference, inbreeding is falling fast due to health campaigns. Those darned do-gooders...

Gypsies however don't traditionally inbreed that much, not in the UK anyway, and if they do, they're still as entitled to universal healthcare as anyone else.

filter out those whose genetic profile makes them ill adapted for the lifestyle.

Yes, that's certainly true. Marginalised people tending to put up barriers is also a part. Gypsy populations, although they've often accepted outsiders, including in Poland, are a classic example of this.

Inbreeding does something similar

Not always a bad thing medicxally, however often devastating and increasingly a thing of the past, fortunately.

do-gooder social policy

I'll always take that over do-badder social policy or even a laissez faire approach.

Like adding in African DNA

We all have that. Nothing 'political' about it.

gypsies act like gypsies (clannish, distrustful of outsiders etc)because of their dna.

More likely a response to the reaction of others. Nothing wrong with being 'clannish' anyway, though very few of us have to be 'distrustful of outsiders' in the western world nowadays.

I hope Cyndilou finds something interesting if she does a test.

Don't

They're actually quite good, and certainly don't 'fudge data'. My only concern with them is that American companies can get hold of your personal data and retain it; something I do not want.

They do show if people have Roma roots, however it's worth mentioning that Roma have been marrying out of their group for centuries so there's probably be quite a mix in the DNA. In any case, DNA is just biology; it's about heritage on a cellular level and doesn't affect the way we think or who we really are.

A lot of people who do them get a big surprise when they do them. There were some tests done for a TV show in the UK a few tears ago. Carol Thatcher took part and her result showed she was 24% Arab. I'm not sure if that came from Maggie, Denis or both. The funniest part was when some bigoted cow who was running a campaign against Gypsies as well as having other unsavoury political connections took part and and found she was mostly East European Gypsy and Ukranian. The look on her face when she got the results (before she went into meltdown and threatened to sue) was priceless.

I wouldn't mind finding out (and wouldn't mind having Gypsy roots at all) though I don't think it really matters; everyone outside South East Africa is the result of a long, complicated and mixed human journey.

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

I quite like KIa; they used to be my client. A few friends have recently bought Jaguars, both new ones and old ones. Nice looking, comfortable, but not very green; electric or hybrid is a big plus.

For us, cost isn't the consideration due to the tax-free thing, however reliability is, as well as cost of any repairs. Electric/hybrid worries me on that score.

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

Absolutely, I looked at one as well, but a fully electric meets my needs more

We're thinking of buying one., perhaps a Nissan. My old banger (I had it for 25 years) finally passed away and although I'm not much bothered about having one, given where we live my OH can get new cars tax-free, and wants to buy one. We both want something green, electric appeals, but definitely not a 'tesla'. I don't want to buy from Musk, and would rather support European manufacturers. It has to be safe and comfortable though, even though we'll only use it for going to the shops and weekend visits to the dzialka which is quite a long way from Warsaw.

I'd favour a hybrid, due to lack of charging stations for fully electric cars.

Looking at some of the cars on the Polish market, it's hard to see why anyone would buy a 'tesla' at all. Or any other American junk.

Hybrids are much more popular here, because of the lack of charging stations

This makes sense, and as petrol prices rise people will look at hybrids. No 'teslas' though.

Nissan Leaf

Lovely cars.

Tesla doesn't have any presence here at all, while other manufacturers are pushing their models strongly.

They've figured out which markets actually matter and where the real competition comes from.

Nothing suggests that he is in any sense a stable person. All that '420' stuff is hardly reassuring to his employees or to the sources of his corporate finance, either.

The people working there will burn out

Normal for over there, and meanwhile manufacturers in Europe and Asia soar ahead.

I've never even seen a 'tesla' in Poland, although Poles are keen on new vehicle technology.

and he looks like a complete wreck during public appearances

Libelling that spelunker (and then repeating the libel) was a sign that he's out of control. That will doubtless cost him dear, not just in legal fees and libel damages, but also in reputational loss; nobody is on his side. Like the jerk Shkreli (an individual devoid of any sort of morality or personal limits), he's all mouth. Nobody actually likes that, and when first of all people's jobs and secondly investors' money is at risk, it means he's finished.

And of course more stable and capable businesses, in Japan, in Korea, in Europe and even in China are developing all sorts of automotive technologies, ones cheaper (and affordable in e.g. Poland) to produce than his, ones that are better quality, ones that don't come from tarriff-land, and ones that people want to buy.

Just the right side of fraudulent trading. A very poor investment run by a very dodgy guy who may well yet end up sharing a cell with that Shkreli creep.

There's nothing 'tesla' can do that other companies round the world can't. Aside from Musk's public meltdown and drug abuse, there's not enough to even justify the price of 260. The people who still hold the stocks tend to be people who didn't react fast enough. Investors in Europe and Asia are shorting those stocks and laughing while they do it.

Travel / Best place to exchange money in Poland? [98]

They're actually quite expensive for larger amounts

Even very. Expensive for smaller amounts too; they charge a transfer fee.

Polish banks will negotiate hard if you want to exchange large amounts of cash

For a house or apartment purchase, it's worth doing that. Kantors will also negotiate (and provide you with a security guard sometimes if it's a huge amount of cah).

I do keep banging on about it, however WorldFirst are excellent for currency exchange and transfer (and they don't pay me or give me discounts for saying this)!

Study / Coming to study at UITM Rzeszow, Poland [10]

For once we agree. It's far from worthless. Although there are accreditation issues, it's accepted in certain countries who send students there, and it's worth mentioning that the degree the OP asks about is quite rare in terms of subject matter and modules studied; this is to its advantage.

Study / Coming to study at UITM Rzeszow, Poland [10]

It's certainly very genuine, is listed as a "non-public higher school" by the Polish government, however the accreditation for their courses comes from various overseas bodies including the US military (not that their accreditation is worth much outside their own activities). If the accrediting bodies are relevant to your country of origin (or where you want to work) that's fine. If not, you may wish to look elsewhere. In competitive fields this does matter.

nauka.gov.pl/en/higher-education-institutions/non-public-higher-schools.html

There are more and more programmes in Poland delivered in English, some of them are excellent, some less so. I would recommend choosing a state sector institution, or a private-sector one whose degrees are accredited by the Polish government and/or who have links with other academic institutions, ideally in Britain (which is the gold standard).

UITM is private, it markets its courses to anyone interested. Their main strength are their vocational courses delivered very often on satellite campuses.

Their aviation management programme is delivered together with Lufthansa, a positive thing, however it is a very new course and I would recommend you contact the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw for specific advice: ilot.edu.pl/en/

You don't say which level you'll be studying at. ILOT does offer doctorates, however if it's a bachelors, you would do well to look at the international rankings.

I wouldn't be shocked if Transferwise goes bust spectacularly

It's got a lot in common with 'multi level' scams. When you get random strangers promoting it online (including here), always but always with a link to click on that should be a warning sign. The 'referral bonus' has to be paid for somehow, and it's the customer who absorbs the cost of their marketing scheme.

I do recommend WorldFirst here, having used it myself for several years. I don't get paid for it though. No 'referral bonus', no 'fees' for doing an exchange and the cash is in a Polish bank account sometimes within minutes. It's saved me a lot of money over the years, especially when I was paid in dollars.

The rather loathesome "Money Saving Expert" Martin Lewis

I quite like him. To a point anyway.

Study / Tuition fees at American School of Wroclaw? [13]

There was another mother who didn't want her child to eat anything orange!!

I can belive that all too easily. A friend who teaches reception class at Primary school says that some of the parents are the bane of her life. Particularly ones who have unusual or strong religious views, or food fads like 'raw food' diets. She described the anti-vaxxer nuts as being "a different level of crazy".

At least in Polish schools they are less likely to indulge eccentricity. I don't generally like a 'one size fits all' approach, however sometimes it has its advantages.

Re the American School, they might be more open to accommodating oddities than the main Polish system.
