News / Nazi gold train 'found in Poland' [90]

attention of the Daily Mail

They've got enough column inches right now from coronavirus, protests and Maddie McCann.

If this turns out to be fruitful, there'll be coverage everywhere.

History / Where did Poles spend summer vacations in the PRL era? [63]

Most Poles have in the past and still do, take most of their holidays in Poland.

You'd be surprised. Most people here have travelled, different places are popular year on year according to wherever Tui, Itaka or Rainbow are marketing.

History / Where did Poles spend summer vacations in the PRL era? [63]

Did they go to Croatian SR? Balaton? Here in Bulgaria? Italy?

Most people took their holidays in Poland. There were (and still are) a lot of holiday centres, some belonging to Trade Unions, some to various clubs and associations and some private.

They're very popular for weddings nowadays, however there are always still no shortage of holidaymakers in season.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [295]

A sad story. Excuse the link to the Mail. The Times had better coverage but is behind a paywall.

not all welfare payments are handouts by any means

Most aren't. If any.

some government programs (like aid to banks that get in trouble or weapons sales) certainly are handouts...

That's true.

The PiS mafia certainly looks after its own at a local level.

News / Nazi gold train 'found in Poland' [90]

28 tonnes of Nazi-era gold

Amazing if they find something though it could of course be another wild goose chase.

I did read a book a while ago about the Nazi's gold which said that around 99% of it had been located either where it was hidden officially or where a couple of hordes had been secreted in Bavaria, and the remaining 1% was probably stolen by a named GI who became suddenly and unaccountably rich.

The book of course could be wrong. Everybody likes a treasure hunt.

they want a state owned chain of grocery stores.

A cooperative would work well. Though not if it's just another PiS Spólka Nomenklatura.

At most, they'll just pour taxpayers money into buying up goods at a high price while dumping them on the market

Above all, they want reward jobs and 'opportunities' for their cronies when they're out of office.

UK, Ireland / Why are Polish people, especially women, so disrespectful toward the English? [442]

Poland and Lithuania, not England and Germany was the center of Europe.

That's not remotely true. Not even nearly.

Especially given population density, economy and cultural output. If anything, France, Northern Italy and the Low Countries were far better placed.

That is why Poland should not join the EU and lose her sovereignty.

You're a bit late for that.

Life / Popular and Practical Cars in Poland [49]

That's a shame, they used to be the best, especially compared to some French and Italian cars. I won't even mention the Morris Ital...

Someone told me once that Mazda never ever break down. You don't see many of those in Poland though. Lots of Kia which are popular here, and I think made in Poland.

your parties policies remind me of labour

Far more right wing than Labour, unfortunately, however it seems that's what's needed here to get PiS out, as they did last time.

Anyway, were the PiS flappers half as psephologically confident as you pretend, why would they worry about an autumn ballot?

Worth saying that if Nowogrodzka are paying you for this, they're wasting their (or the public's) dosh.

History / Life in Poland in 1800-1900 [18]

According to Wikipedia, Jaski (if this is the same one) was burnt by the Germans in 1944.

It isn't impossible that there was damage and destruction in the 1920 war, however the page doesn't mention that.

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaski_(województwo_podlaskie)

BTW, there's a Jaski and there's a Jaśki, both a few kilometres apart.

politicks solely because of his choice of sexual partners

I notice you use a plural. As far as I know, he's been with his partner for a long time now; no suggestion of promiscuity.

He's done rather well, succeeded against all odds, been a very successful Mayor of Slupsk and is very much respected. He doesn't expect to become president (although he would be a good one) however he's doing very well in the various roles that he has.

I don't think an openly homosexual candidate could win atm.

Not right now, however people in Belgium said the same, and it happened without fuss. Nobody would have believed that Trump could ever have won across the Atlantic or that tousle-haired clown in the U.K. Having said that, even JK has had to be very careful.

you can't judge a whole nationality based on a couple of encounters and make such assumptions

You're absolutely right. Worth remembering though that this is a discussion where some people have as you say, a couple of encounters, some have 30 years of being from one country and living in the other, some are from one country with their roots and a very large part of their cultural base in the other and yet others who've never been to either and are just throwing their two pennorth in.

The truth, as much as truth exists, is more nuanced.

and i'm disappointed honestly in the adults of this society this is horrible

Even the adults of this society are disappointed with it, however you are right to be angry.

There is a lot of "banter" on here

The Archbishop of Banterbury himself could scarcely do better.

Polonia / Polonia in Germany [59]

It's like being alive and not being dead.

You can be alive and German. Millions are.

Some families will always assimilate, and nationality isn't set in stone.

Kia cars are popular in Poland now.

The best way Poles can stick it to Germany

I don't think people particularly want to do that. Cost and reliability are the main factors.

I have to question the demographics of respondents, and how many are being polled

This is a growing issue. In the U.K., pollsters sometimes still call people on landlines; they are increasingly rare among urban residents under their mid-50s or among people who move around a lot for work. In rented homes nowadays they are almost non-existent.

Neither Poles (as a majority) will pay attention to reports nor those that do will put full blame on Pi

Normal everywhere now for voters, it's true here and it isn't specific to Poles either.

The PR matters far more than the policies now, the soundbites more than the economic and social realities.
