Life / Overhead lines in rural and suburban Poland? [17]

As for Poland, are most people using electric stoves or gas ones?

Both. Often an electric hob and a gas oven. The preference is usually for gas. I prefer all electric too however most people don't. You can buy ceramic and induction hobs here however most people prefer gas.

The stoves in Poland never have decent grills; for Poles, grilling is an outdoor activity, so at best, it's a heating element in the top of the oven, and not usually a very effective one.. British style eye-level grills are completely unknown here (and I heard that new ones are banned in the UK now).

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

rural people, at least in my village, have stopped being embarassed with showing their support for non-PiS candidates.

Up the road from us in Łomianki, all (yes, all) the Duda adverts on the village street have been defaced. On each one, the M in 'Mój Prezydent' has been changed to an H, and the second d in Duda had been changed, bery logically, to a p.

Life / Help with Polish address - the correct way of putting that on an envelope? [29]

In any flat of that period or built before/after, you put the street name, the building number and the flat number. So Flat 10, in 69 Chujowa Street would be ul. Chujowa 10/69 - or ul. Chujowa 10 m69 if you prefer.

The dot after Ul is usual though not in any way essential.

Being factual is

You're not being factual. You're conflating any politics that's left of ultra-conservatism (i.e. almost the whole political spectrum) with Bolshevism.

Why would you cast aspersion?

Or a compliment, despite the blue curtain.

In some places yes. Looks unsightly but is cheaper and easier than burying them.

A proliferation of satellite dishes is a bigger problem here.

Thinking about it, they do contribute to the atmosphere though. The cables, not the satellite dishes.

That's of course what will be cheapest and most prolific in any supermarket.

A word of caution though, the farmers selling fruit and veg from the street stalls in cities just get their products from the wholesalers, much the same as supermarkets. It isn't fresher or more local, however it is sometimes lower quality.

Is it the posh, premium supermarkets?

No. It's a mid-market franchise. They differ a lot depending on how big the premises are, how good the owner is. Plus, it's virtually an MLM pyramid scheme with different tiers of profit margin, something like 'uplines' etc., so they (and their pricing) differ a lot. Some of them make their profit on vodka, beer, cigs and peanuts, others have more fresh food.

Oh and do Polish supermarkets offer locally grown produce?

Yes, but not only. Local is cheaper, however if you want tomatoes in January they won't be Polish.

Expensive doesn't always mean better.

One reason Biedronka is so good. They do have some expensive things, however they've got a lot of very good products at a low price.

Of course big supermarkets don't actually need much of a mark up on goods. They make more money from investing the cash they take in; they get steady business every day, but pay suppliers as late as they cant away with.

Much the same in the U.K. however they have some posher stuff too. Their champagne keeps winning prizes. I've not been in one here in PL however I imagine it to be a bit like Biedronka used to be, before the current owners bought it.

Not at all they started with the best intentions and then dumbded down quality

The issue was when they bought Lider Price from the people who own Geant; they ended up with a downmarket discount chain that lost out when Biedronka expanded and Aldi arrived.

He totally made Duda and the delegation look like idiots

An easy enough thing to do. Apparently they got a few minutes. I doubt they got to actually say anything after the introductions and Trumpet's spiel..

the visit appears to have been largely ignored in the US.

Many people there can't find their own country on a world map and probably don't know that Poland exists.

Duda is now coming 4th among young people,

Trzaskowski looks like he'll go through to a second round; when that happens all bets are off. PiS are disliked and distrusted so much.

It could easily be a repeat of a few years ago when the PiS/LPR/SO coalition was defeated by people coming together to get rid of those clowns.

I assume feel/products are mostly tailored to local tastes.

That's true of all supermarkets.

best for British expats I guess

Not especially. Biedronka and Lidl are generally better for that.

I heard that christianpaul.pl has some excellent designs.

He's a famous non-existent designer who says that Duda's wife is a 'real style icon'.

They have no shame about just making things up.

Poles

Or Polish voters...

Including the many Poles on:

the left

Narutowicz was a good man; it's a shame he was murdered. If he hadn't been, his impact would have been huge.

Political violence seems to be the favourite tool of the far-right, that and outright lying which we see at the moment.

premolition

'Premonitions' and intuition are very close and often confused with each other. The difference is that intuition is proven to exist, whereas 'premonitions' aren't; though they seem to happen and not all reported 'premonitions' are that easy to explain away.

I really wish for this gift to go away,

Many people say the same.

Tesco withdrawal from Poland won't change anything

Quite. Most of the big ones were sold a few years ago, and the ex-Lider Price Tescos have been largely eclipsed by Biedronka.

There's a gap in the market for a discount retailer though, and sooner or later one will appear.

99% of it is that, plus a few other techniques and lucky guesswork. The other 1% don't generally advertise or accept money for it.
