Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

freedom from congested roads, road accidents and road rage

Sadly all these exist. The pedestrianisation that's happened already in Poland has been a success, and the proposed extension of that in śródmieście will certainly improve quality of life.

I can live with congested payments

People have to. There is a better way to live!

Real Estate / Buy an apartment in Warsaw now or wait [14]

The older ones are better built than the new ones and usually have lovely, original parquet floors and higher ceilings

This is generally true; they also have more character in general. If however you want a second bathroom or a larger balcony/terrace, those are more easily found in new or new-ish buildings.

Your neighbours can be a bit of a mixed bag

Also true. Those very nice buildings (some started in the late 30s, completed during the war) at the bottom end of Żoliborz have excellent flats however many of the residents are older people were placed there by the city, a step away from homelessness and often with alcohol issues. They may well be pleasant enough people, however it keeps prices down in the immediate vicinity. Great when you buy, not so good when you come to resell.

I'd avoid newer buildings with 'leisure facilities' due to differences in taxation rules.

News / The Fur is Flying! Animal Rights in Poland [87]

There is absolutely no need for natural fur coats. Artificial fur does look nice

Agreed. Though even artificial fur is less good than a decent fabric coat. In countries like Poland that have colder winters, coats in the shops tend to be very warm.

News / The Fur is Flying! Animal Rights in Poland [87]

If that is a main issue they should bring forward an alterative that would be more 'humane'

Do follow the thread. Jarosław Kaczyński has brought forward such an alternative; banning fur farms.

"hilst do-gooders in their ignorance are so supportive of 'animals'.

This gem of logic "brings forward" two interesting points:
- since you're ranting about what you amusingly describe as do-gooders, does that mean you're more sympathetic to do-badders?
- why did you write the word animal as 'animal'?

in China they don't have laws protecting animals, you can kick your dog or a cat to dead on a street

Is Chinese practice relevant to Poland?

Food / Black pudding & kaszanka [36]

Why is it so?

It uses (in the case of black pudding) oatmeal. Rather than kasza which expands when heated.

Work / Can I find a non-corporate job in Poland? [34]

bill they suddenly go rude and mad at me, so they assume Viber advice must be free

If you aren't a professional, why would you try to charge. Psychologists are a regulated professional.

Maybe I can try becoming a veterinarian or dental technician instead?

Quite a long and demanding training for the first, stiff entry requirements to the courses too.

What sort of work are you doing now?

It's well enough publicised here. The plans look great.

I suggest you follow current affairs in Warsaw rather than expecting people to look for 'sources' for you.

Where do you think are housing prices going?

Upscale prices are coming down, downscale prices are going up. If you see what I mean. A lot depends on the area now, more than it used to.

an older (maybe even pre-war) building versus a new construction

That depends largely on where you want to live; older apartments closer to the centre, newer ones out in the 'burbs.

smog

That's a real problem in Warsaw right now.

the millenials today

They're middle-aged already. Generation Z are the coming generation; and they're very different to what came before.

we have been conditioned to

Sadly.

Fortunately the good people of Oslo are breaking free from that. As part of their independent and free life. Another chunk of central Warsaw is due to be pedestrianised soon; this is seen here as a good thing.

Will they ride bicycles and horses?

They'll use excellent public transport.

Gaining freedom from congested roads, crowded pavements, road rage and road accidents.

Travel / Traveling! What to do in Warsaw and Krakow? [39]

Warsaw Rising mound or Jewish resistance mound?

As far as I know it's neither. It's called the Kopa Czwila.

I just looked up the place we saw in Kielce; it's the Kadzielnia.

artificial ones.

Just an ordinary coat is better if it's made with modern fabrics.

Where I come from, fur coats have never been completely respectable. They were seen as asking the question "what did she have to do to him to get that present?" Single/divorced/widowed women tended to avoid them for that reason.

There's a mound not far from Metro Ursynów. Probably not prehistoric but still worth a climb.

Have you seen that natural structure in Kielce, the one with the old quarry around? Full of visitors when we were there a few weeks ago, some climbing to the top..

News / E.U. Denounces Poland's Authority on LBGTQ Free Zones [150]

It was a very odd direction for that party to go

They're not known for thinking things through.

(considering their prezes....)

When he passes to the great cat basket in the sky (and he's not getting younger) all the stuff that people say but don't publish will come a-floodin' out. If these daft 'zones' are still a thing then, Europe will laugh so heartily at Poland there'll be earth tremors.

Quite. The fewer the better.

It would be good if it were a legal requirement that anyone who has a car has somewhere off-road to keep it.

When I'm there I just tend to walk most places, taxis in the evening

Uber is handy in Warsaw. Unless you live well out of the city there's very little point running a car, not least because parking can be a real hassle in centrum.

About electric cars, Polish car buying is quite conservative (plus there's lots of second hand cars from over the border) however eventually they'll catch up.

Travel / Traveling! What to do in Warsaw and Krakow? [39]

in Warsaw you can climb the Palace of Culture and Science

Personally, I'd rather use the lift than actually climb. Easier on the legs.

Poles seem to like observation towers, viewing platforms, etc. I've seen them obviously here in Wawa (PKiN, pl. Zamkowy, plus the Marriott Skybar), Wrocław, Gdańsk and the best of them at the university in Poznań.

Law / How do I verify a Polish company's existence? [249]

ul. Aleja Jana Pawła II 27

This address is part of the Atrium Centre which has various businesses in and also a 'virtual office'.

The phone number is a cellphone. There's very little online about them other than their website and registration details.

If any recruitment company asks for money upfront from prospective employees, this is a serious warning sign and I would not personally want to engage with any company who try that.

Food / What Polish foods and brands do you miss when you go to other countries? [216]

i don't know what to say

I thought it was a spoof at first. The Sheffield accent (almost the same as mine before I escaped) makes it funnier. South Yorkshire has never been a culinary gem. That's why we were all so overjoyed when kebab shops appeared in the mid/late 80s.

Lancashire butter pies from the wrong side of the pennines are an oddity; they do go down well in Poland though.

which knocks them out pretty quickly.

Better than the red hot poker, I suppose. No real need to wear fur nowadays; there are plenty of warmer and more comfortable alternatives. I've noticed that over the past few decades that there's less and less here in Poland.

Another wow. Yes, you can buy everything in GB.

Here too. Flying Tiger sell a good version.

allspice is sort of forgotten in GB.

Essential for some things. Has a nice effect on flavour/colour if you put a few into a bottle of vodka or gin.

Is calzone a traditional English dish

It's certainly becoming one. Fits nicely into the repertoire of UK cuisine because we have a long tradition of pies.

News / Polish People STILL denied US Entry [96]

Visas have been abolished. Good. But the entry can still be denied by an immigration clerk at the airport.

We were there late last year (both on an ESTA) and entry was straightforward, immigration staff were polite. A few countries have recently relaxed restrictions for Polish citizens; it certainly makes travel easier.

Life / Sobering-up station in Poland [13]

Can anyone tell me more about the izba wytrzeźwień

They still exist, however there are legal issues. A lady (she was a lawyer) got a huge payout several years ago because she was taken to one on the grounds of the alcohol level in her blood, despite behaving in an orderly way. Since then, the cops here have been far more careful about taking people to them without good cause.

Friends who've overnighted in them tell me that the police routinely steal any cash/valuables from people who are taken there.

I think it's quite a unique thing to Poland?

They exist in a few countries in the region (mostly further east). People are charged for their stay. The nurses on duty sometimes refuse to admit people brought by the police if they consider it frivolous (or an excuse by the police to rob someone).

News / Tipsy Warsaw Mayor gets Mocked [15]

from what I read it was said jokingly

Very much so, and it's of course the back end of the sezon ogórkowy in the media. If he's wanted to he could have made trouble (enough politicians have done that here) however he was smiling and laughing when he was joking with the DJ about playing Jamiroquai.

His popularity ratings here in Warsaw are high.

News / The Fur is Flying! Animal Rights in Poland [87]

PiS is putting forth an animal rights bill that would outlaw fur production (among other things).

One of the (very) few issues on which I agree 100% with Jarosław Kaczyński.

BTW, I'm not against hunting per se (and have done it), providing it's for either environmental management or ideally for food. A free and happy life in a forest and death by a swift, clean bullet seems far less vile than life in a hellish indoor factory farm ending with a lorry journey to a conveyor belt at an abattoir.

propaganda pieces for all kind of ideological crazies'?

There's nothing wrong with propaganda and those who highlight the issues with fur farms are certainly not 'ideological crazies'. They're people who dislike animals being killed using a red-hot poker.

This guy is nothing but a charlatan, a thief using the name of God to rip ppl off.

St. John Paul II refused to meet or even appear at the window for Rydzyk's followers, the so-called 'Family of Radio Maryja' during His last visit to Kraków. This speaks volumes.

Real Estate / Are the property prices in Poland too high? [19]

Are they really falling?

Vendors are still 'optimistic' about the asking price, however here in Warsaw fewer people are buying and rental flats are empty.
