News / E.U. Denounces Poland's Authority on LBGTQ Free Zones [150]

It was kind of dumb of PiS (but I repeat myself) to create an easily available symbol of resistance

Exactly. They didn't really think it through.

They expected support and found they didn't get it. I was walking very close to where Po3 lives a couple of days ago; there were several visible from his front door. He must be seething.

Apparently Flying Tiger have had to reorder those rainbow bags several times; there's probably a factory somewhere producing them just for the Polish market.

scooters

They're everywhere now. I live on the edge of Kampinoski Forest and you even see them abandoned and awaiting collection up here.

which you refuse to do.

You don't get to decide.

And meanwhile, the few PiS supporting rural districts which are considered zones are heavily criticised and every day Poles hang more and more rainbow flags in solidarity with those that PiS have tried and failed to intimidate.

News / The Fur is Flying! Animal Rights in Poland [87]

Are they slaughtered gently or savagely?

There is no such thing as 'gentle slaughter'.

We are however talking about proposed legislation here in Poland rather than anywhere else.

There's nothing to understand; the political and social situation here is far more nuanced than an outsider can easily comprehend.

And the ridicule that PiS have brought upon themselves by their rhetoric is already rebounding on them.

ah so those are 'bad' as well.

Yes.

Surly people should be eating grass

Really?

I'm not going to debate with you or anyone

The one wise comment you've so far made.

Read that bill first

Have you read the bill?

So banning 'cruel' fur farms you in fact you condemn all animal husbandry

Really? No. Not really. That's actually one of the silliest things you've said.

banned poultry producers ... h and what people who loose their livelihood gonna do eh?

Have you ever been in a poultry factory farm?

BTW, you conveniently forget that factory farming is less labour-intensive and employs far fewer people than conventional farming...

For ruining Polish economy,

You seriously 'think' that banning fur farms would "ruin Polish economy"???? How much fur do you even see people wearing here nowadays? (Not that you see anything here, being elsewhere).

You know master

If that had a meaning....

Life / Sobering-up station in Poland [13]

Yes, but it still shouldn`t prevent victims from sueing them

There was the case I mentioned. That one was a little untypical in that the victim and the witnesses were lawyers.

Otherwise, being drunk at the time would certainly make someone's account be considered less reliable.

Real Estate / Buy an apartment in Warsaw now or wait [14]

Hugely so. Very few 'dodgy' areas (and a sluggish housing market in/near those places).

There are some lovely bits of Żoliborz. Annoying for shopping though; it doesn't do well for supermarkets.

Well and F him for that, evidently he is turning senile

For disliking cruelty to animals and seeking to do something about it?

"animals' because in the long run it is not about animals but about a crazy ideological agenda.

That's one of the lamest responses I've seen here. Even by your pathetically weak standard of logic.

Food / Black pudding & kaszanka [36]

It took me 20 years to figure this out!

Hard to know which is 'better', kaszanka or black pudding. It probably depends on how you're serving it and what with. Plus, with comfort food it depends on the context and the memories. Right now, I'd eat either.

Deniability. If the person was drunk, the police can say they don't know what they were doing.

I seldom wear a jacket/coat/anorak in winter

same here. People stare because they think I'm underdressed.

I must be a typical Northerner.

You're an honorary Yorkshireman.

Genealogy / Funny Polish surnames [64]

There's a Polish writer (I've met him) called Gniewomir Kuciapski.

I gather he's changed his name now.

It's perhaps surprising (and certainly cheering) how many balconies here have rainbow flags very prominently displayed.

the most anti-gay country in the EU

Yet the commercial gay scene here is thriving.

constant noise of the low-flying aircraft

We get that here, on the other side of Babice; it's the wrong place for an airfield. It affects quality of life, potentially affects real estate prices, and with all the amateur pilots taking off and landing in a built-up area, risks an accident one day.

Having said that, Żoliborz is still a nice place to live. Whether the proposed new bridge and the road building connected with it affects that is yet to be seen.

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

Really boring town

Agreed. Turek too.

I didn't realize until yesterday that it has quite a nice old town

It's nice. Kutno, further along the railway line, is similar. Both have an OK town centre.

None of these places though are particularly affluent, and it will be a while before we see much of an uptake of electric vehicles there.

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

No. The last one started to need repairs a few years ago which coincided with going away for work, so we sold and didn't replace it. There's no need for one in a big city, especially one like Warsaw with good transport/bad traffic and parking problems.

If you're handy for the metro and shops there's not much point. It's usually (especially at peak times) quicker to use the metro here. Plus, on the rare occasions I'm in Śródmieście nowadays, it's usually in the evening for a meal/drink so it would mean a taxi anyway.

A few people I know in Warsaw (and back in the UK) ditched theirs during/after lockdown.
