Food / What Polish foods and brands do you miss when you go to other countries? [216]

Pie and mash shops are a dying breed

There's something of a revival now. Personally I wouldn't touch it.

Eel Pie (and eel and ham pie) has a long tradition. I've eaten eel and ham pie, however it isn't especially interesting and (like eel in most other places, like Poland) belongs to a time when there was less variety of food available.

land of the free...LMAO

I've never felt especially 'free' there. Certainly less so than in Poland or the UK.

which one

It must be a very strange feeling to be on the wrong side of history...

through divorce or parental break-up, which research has shown to be traumatic for some children

Another issue here is also the usual urban/rural split; this does have an effect in some countries, both on schooling and the general environment that kids are raised in.

Worth pointing out that most of these ridiculous 'zones' here are underpopulated backwaters; none of Poland's big cities (where there's greater scrutiny of decisions and a wider talent pool of local politicians) has taken such a bizarre and ill-advised decision.

I don't like it that much unless it's crispy bacon fat. Unless it's what you mentioned that you put on bread. Delicious, though I see it mistranslated a lot in Poland as lard. Lard is the refined kind that comes in chilled block; nobody would eat it as it iss. Dripping is the delicious thing that goes so well on bread.

Exactly. And a significant cohort are children with serious intellectual and/or physical disabilities who were adopted several years after birth and after spending most or all of their lives in institutional establishments..

But hey, some people out there think it's the end of the world if an unwanted child is adopted by a carer who isn't overtly heterosexual.

The French town of Saint-Jean-de-Braye has broken its partnership with its Polish sister city of Tuchów

One among many.

drastic images

Not as drastic as the unwanted erotic dreams of outspoken homophobes.

The mentality of those who rant the loudest (and longest) about the subject is very telling; they hate something about themselves that they'd rather not be. Similar to immigrants who hate immigration.

Notice that the comment above clearly suggests that his first thought on the matter is the mechanics of what he imagines two (or more) men do in bed.

Rather than more basic rights of safety, cohabitation, pensions or even the sex life of two (or more) women. Perhaps female sexuality doesn't cross his mind as much...

Genealogy / Want to find a person [777]

It sounds like one of the E.T.A Hoffman surnames assigned to Jewish people in Warsaw during (I think) the first decade of the nineteenth century. These tended to follow themes. On one particular day all the surnames were types of fish (his wife had apparently cooked a nice lunch) and on another day they were all musical terms.

There's an English surname, Oliphant, however as I recall the origin is something to do with olives.

keep ignoring him as his panic of being alone spirals to new and more insane heights.

Probably the best approach. With narcissism manifested as overt hatred of specific groups in Polish society who have done him no harm yet he still feels the need to start multiple trolling threads about on an online forum, it's best to avoid getting sucked down the rabbit hole of someone's poor mental health.

But there are a lot of fascists and maniacal rightards instead.

Sadly, and very few (if any) of them with actual first hand experience of the matters they spit so much bile about.

Food / Black pudding & kaszanka [36]

I suppose it could. In the ordinary stuff where the bits of fat are much smaller, it soaks into the rest when you cook it. Black pudding doesn't need much oil when you fry, so presumably it lubricates too.

I've only ever bought the basic kind.

Hmm, those pieces of fat are quite conspicuous.

The cheaper kind in supermarkets don't have that. That pic is from the most traditional supplier who win prizes.

Do people ever eat it uncooked?

I've seen that happen however it isn't very common.Usually it's sliced and fried.

Here's a black pudding for comparison. From Chadwick's of Bury, a very traditional maker:

These 3 are said to be a little different

Kiszka certainly; it's in a class of its own. I feel hungry now!

Krupniok

Though not hungry for krupniok; there's just something about it.

Simple

Simple, the issue isn't.

Simple, the mistake that PiS made certainly was. They picked the wrong enemy. They picked an enemy far stronger than they are, an enemy who are used to adversity and who have never been defeated despite so many failed attempts.

Polish people aren't fools, nor are they instinctively haters. Most people here are used to a very nuanced and subtle political and social environment; PiS dropped a bollock and didn't realise that. Hence the outpouring of support and the general scorn on the boobies of PiS.

I saw one of those and was squinting at it to see where the battery was :-)

The electric ones with GPS that you rent look fun. I wanted to have a go on one but my partner (same-sex so not off-topic) pointed out that 4 mojitos and an electric scooter don't mix well...
