Life / Tell me about Northeastern Poland [29]

Remember that Białystok is a regional centre near the east border with rural areas around it; it's benefited from a lot of EU infrastructure funding as a regional administrative centre. Suwałki mich the same.

many a Western Polish cities that look derelict

Which ones?

Food / Goose meat anyone in Poland? [20]

But they must have mixed it with camphor

Usually yes. It was also used without camphor for babies and young children.

When roasting goose, chestnut stuffing and apples are traditional.

Food / Goose meat anyone in Poland? [20]

I've done goose for Christmas and the amount of fat that came off it was huge.

Tasty though.

goose fat

Years ago in northern England, people used to buy goose grease as a chest rub for winter colds etc.

Food / Hopless beer in Poland? [30]

Alcohol content, taste, intoxicating effect.

It's nicer to have a few pints and feel merry than start feeling drunk too soon in the evening.

Food / Hopless beer in Poland? [30]

I like the drier kind (and really miss Double Diamond).

One problem with the craft beers though is some of them are way too strong for me. 6% is the absolute limit, and I'm happier with 3%.

Food / Hopless beer in Poland? [30]

@pawian
Probably.

I had a glass of 'craft beer' a couple of weeks ago on ul. Chmielna. Tasted just like grapefruit juice. If they'd actually said that in the long description, I'd have stuck to Tyskie.

Crft cider can be nice though; I had some rhubarb cider in England which was great, except for the price, 50zl a glass :-D

Food / Hopless beer in Poland? [30]

I have never tried such beer

I've had it. It's the kind of thing you try a small glass of as a novelty.

News / Why Poland has no problem with terrorism [64]

It's sadly possible. Though if they found TNT it's an issue. I gather the Germans want to extradite, so Poland may do that to avoid the hassle of a domestic trial.

News / The Leningrad Amber room finally found in Poland? [11]

There's a new development. It's not the first time there's been a potential lead on the Amber Room, and it may not be the last; all the same, it's interesting, not least because being underwater may help preserve any amber.

And of course if the Amber Room isn't found, there's still the 360 tonnes of cargo, some of it already identified as porcelain and, possibly containing other important salvage.

German steamer Karlsruhe was leaving the port in a great hurry and with a large cargo.... All of this, when put together, stimulates people's imagination.

News / Why Poland has no problem with terrorism [64]

Merged:

Far-right terror suspect arrested in Poland.

At least they've caught him. A German extremist with TNT and other items:

Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) has detained a German citizen suspected of involvement with a terrorist group and of holding radical, extreme-right views. He has been charged with possession of explosives and ammunition.

Places like Białystok, Ełk, Lomża. Are there any jobs there?

Not so many. One reason people move from that region to places where there are jobs.

cleaner and better maintained

Normal for rural communities.

Food / What Polish foods and brands do you miss when you go to other countries? [216]

ozory in a stołówka

Same here; I can't abide that either. Reminded me of pressed tongue sandwiches, a bad childhood memory.

I was once served some barszcz biały with small tube like bits of offal in it. I forget what they were, however I'll never knowingly eat them again. About eating brain, I've had brain curry (in Bradford) and wasn't impressed, though that was maybe more about the appearance than the taste, which was bland.

The same with salcesonik here in PL; probably an acquired taste...

that eel pie exists is beyond me

Evidently many things are beyond you. I've eaten Eel Pie. It is a traditional dish. And provided a link to a recipe; one of many.

Nor does the firm you cited deliver eel pie

Looks like you didn't read much of the link. They make and sell Eel Pies. £7.95 each...

They do deliver jellied eel... don't ship them by mail....not a traditional pie and mash shop

Looks like you didn't (or are pretending not to) notice that there are two links. One is to a company on the coast that deliver Eel Pies. The other is to a very traditional (perhaps the best known) London Pie and Mash Shop. They sell jellied eels (you falsely claimed this was impossible) and stewed eels by mail order (no ships involved!) to any UK post code.

I'm happy to link to any number of companies that do much the same, however the thread is about Polish foods rather than your attempts to argue about another countries traditional cuisine (of which your knowledge is self-evidently lacking).

Your reading comprehension is non-existent.

This one looks pretty good. Eels (including Eel Pie and Jellied Eels) delivered to your home or workplace: sallyjanespies.co.uk

They also deliver (to any UK postcode) smoked eels.

Here in Poland, I've only seen them smoked; and seen fewer on sale nowadays than a few years ago.

There is no "eel pie

There very much is; I've eaten it.
Here's a recipe: alleasyrecipes.com/recipes/3/1/eel_pie.asp
And here's another.

A few shops

Did you expect a deluge of them?

None supply jellied eel, which cannot be shipped by mail.

I wouldn't tell that to these guys...
manze.co.uk/chilled-deliveries/

Or to any of the other companies that deliver eels (stewed or jellied).

News / E.U. Denounces Poland's Authority on LBGTQ Free Zones [150]

Nobody is going to want the PR hassle and they will simply go to other towns.

Very much so; it would raise questions about why that location was selected rather than the 75% of Poland that doesn't have these 'zones'.

There's also the issue of stability, predictability and continuity; if a given local authority acts so bizarrely that they designate themselves as a so-called 'LGBT-free zone', what other counterproductive or potentially unwelcome decisions might they take in the near future?

Interestingly, due to demographic shift away from the East End of London, there are now some new companies (operating in the Home Counties) that supply Pie and Mash and also Eel Pie by mail order. They use eels from Ireland, since eel is no longer fished in the Thames.
