Ok
Give me 10 mins.
I have had too much coffee today and it is too cold to do any more for now.

Ok here it is, I put in a those reular sized candles so you have an idea of scale.
I have not tried to restore it in anyway for fear of messing it up, i keep it oiled and wrapped up in cloth.

Notice the vertical and diagonal scratches on the last photo, it reminds me of that thing when you have killed someone you mark them off but it is probably just fancy.

I have a few more photos of the same knife.

Can anyone tell me anything about it?.
It was given to me and I was told is a bayonet and was from World War one.

If the photos don't work just post something and they will work next time.

Looks like a polish 1911 mauser bayonet. Likely it has never been used and only dropped once.

I did not get it in Poland but in Lithuania.
But you reckon it is from 1911?.
What about the markings?
I know you like to take the mickey but i also know you are interested in this type thing and i wonder which you will go for?

Yeah fair enough, it could even be a "W".
But that slot on the back, is that to slide it on to the end of the gun?.

I know very little about knives, except which end i prefer to be on.

There is the number "91" on it but that could just be the manufacturers?

Its probably the batch number, or the cast number

Yeah,
Well if you find out anything more,
I would be interested to find out more.

Just thinking about it, if it is from 1911, it is the oldest thing here.

That is so cool that you actaully have these .

I got it drunk, in a bar, a guy tried to sell it to me, a big crusty Lithuanian who could barely stand he was so drunk.

I said "what would i want with a knife, I don't want it" so he gave it to me and then proceeded to give me another knife, of no historical significance, said his ex had tried to kill him with it and he wanted rid of it.

He was so drunk I just took them and thanked him, rather I have them than some stranger, if you know what I mean.
Not much of a story but that's how it happened.

Did he try to give you his wife too?

Naw, he fell backwards unconscious and just lay there, he was locked out of his tree.

Looks like a standard WW2 era Mauser bayonet, could be from any number of counties though as they were licensed all over,Poland,Jugoslavia South America....Check the slidey out bit, there will be markings there for sure if its actualy German/nazi. (the ww1 era bayonets tended to be far longer).

Yeah,Hi dan, hows it hanging? Been a bit busy here so on and off when I can get time.

Okay, anyone else?.
I would like to know what it is, at least you all agree it is a bayonet, or a bonnet or a bouquet?.
But an approximate age and area would be nice to know, anyone?.

1) 50/50.
2) Phone a friend.

3) Ask PF.

FYI...

I have my grandfather's medals; he was in the Polish Army in WW1 and then in the Polish-Soviet War. His medals are: Pilsudski 10th Year Anniversary, Polish-Russo Service Medal 1918-1921, Haller's Swords for Americans, WW1 Victory Medal, Cross of Valour, and Lithuanian Campaign Badge 1919-1921; I also have his Polish Eagle Hat Badge. There is a picture of him in my profile, between WW1 and the PSW. I recently had the medals mounted and put in a frame - looks great in the office alongside family photographs. IF anyone wants to see a picture of it, e-mail me as I am not sure how to post a photo on here.

Try this website: polishmilitaria.com

Col. Wesolowski is in Florida, USA, and I've had some correspondence with him. His prices are over the edge on ebay, but if you know what your Grandfather was awarded and have the money to spend - he is a good and reliable source. He is a bit stingy with information with the knowledge/information sharing, but once you beyond his abrasive exterior - he is OK.

Sorry to hear that Polska man. I have a couple of medals from the 1960's you are more than welcome to have them, oh and I have a WW1 victory medal too. Polish defense 1960s and RPL Merit Medal. Ehh, you can have'em.

The colonel is a very "interesting" character - he is an amateur military historian, and I am at Harvard for my Master's in history... and well, e-mail me if you want the rest of the story! ;)
