We can't win. Enter WW1 and it's that sinister British Empire again, meddling in world affairs. Don't enter WW2 quick enough and we end up with the Poles whining at us for 80 years because they got defeated in a month, "where were you, Angolu?!" WW1 was one of the stupidest wars in modern history. As usual, mainland (central/east) Europeans start stupid fights with each other and then British men end up dying miles from home to finish them.
We were quite happy to just have our colonies in sunny places and get rich but peculiar little 'old world' types were determined to throw Europe into conflict, maybe so they could show they were still relevant/tough. It's like if you emigrate abroad, become highly successful, but meanwhile the guys back in your hometown are still having punch-ups in carparks.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything else you said except this. China is shaking it's ancient, wise head in incredulous amusement at the above inanity. For decades we've been told they'll attack Taiwan 'any day now', and still crickets. They are the last major power I'm worried about doing something stupid like the US and Russia.

In ww1, I'm not sure, but in ww2, 5m troops came from Britain and around 3.5m from empire territories, including anglosphere territories such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand, as well as India.
