Future of Kaliningrad Oblast - is it possible to annex by Poland or will it become an independent country?
Russian regime furious that Poles have just restored the old Polish name of Kaliningrad - Królewiec - which is a close translation of its German name - Konigsberg.
I hope that now when Kaliningrad - that parody of a city - became Królewiec - Kónigsberg again, Russians will do sth to improve its appearance coz now it is a Soviet monster with ugly blocks of flats everywhere.
Check photos in 95 and 96 comparing Królewiec to Gdańsk - like two different worlds.

Urbanisation brings blocks and if you think PRL era ones are bad, go,to ultra-capitalistic Hong Kong and see some of the awful homes there.

It doesn`t matter. All Polish cities have such areas due to urbanisation etc. But your city of Gdańsk has also the amazing Old Town. While Królewiec has shyt because barbarian Soviet hordes rebuilt nothing and even destroyed everything what was still standing after the war.

And pictures don't even do it justice - you have to come here and see it for yourself. Walk into the churches and cathedrals, visit the parks and the beaches, breathe the atmosphere of modernity mixed with the past; breathe freedom, because Gdańsk is - in so many ways - a free city.
Can one be in love with a city? Because I think I am. :)

Parts of Wrzeszcz are like that. A nice place to go for a walk in.
And Gdynia us underrated whereas Sopot is the opposite.

Definitely. And Oliwa as well, with the Cathedral, park and historic tenements as well as ultra-modern Oliva Business Park, University library or Garnizon estate.
And Gdynia us underrated
Very much underrated! Gdynia, if you know what to look for, is an orgasm for a modern urban architecture fans.

The ruins of Królewiec Castle were blown up by Soviets in 1960s. Instead, they built the Communist Party House which has always remained unused due to faulty construction. Amasing!

That symbolises communist standards quite well. The whole city is such.

On second thought, I doubt it. Local Russians don`t feel connected with the city and the area at all. To them it is an alien culture.

It always bothers my why Poland hasn't recovered the Kaliningrad area yet. It's part of Poland. Do it the Russian way - occupy it and see what happens.
Lithuania have an equal or greater claim, and Poland can't afford to and doesn't want to have a large post industrial city with limited strategic value to them and with a resentful foreign population.
