Future will depend on it's use as a political bargaining chip for Russia, and on further development in Russian-German relations...Neither Poland nor Lithuania will annex it...The people there may be quite happy with things just as they are.

I'm afraid I can't put forward my prediction about the future of "oblast" but the option "became an independent country" I would place in the bottom of the list without a moment's hesitation.
That act of protest against another putin's fosterling (Boos) - pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gieorgij_Boos and putin's power in general is quite often thing in today's Russia. I may take part in such a protest, however that doesn't automatically mean I want Moscow to be an independent country.
