Very touristy at the moment and jammed with visitors from I'd guess Germany and Austria though not only.
You can see the Polish traces and also the Austrian and Ukrainian. Like a crossroads of Europe. Some people from other continents too. Probably a nice place to be a student.
It's not a vacation as such for me however Lviv is certainly jammed full of tourists at the moment. I was here a couple of months ago when it was a little quieter however this weekend seems to be the busy period. People from all over. I hear plenty of German being spoken, some French and also Croatian and other South Slavonic languages.
You wouldn't know a war was on at all. If anything, it's close to overtourism however at least people are here and spending money.
Even in Kyiv, there's quite a lot going on however the distance does put off casual visitors. That and a few other things.
That's not a difficult threshold to pass, lol. I can think of at least five Polish cities that are nicer than Krakow. Horribly touristy, everything you want to do takes place in the centre (e.g., all the pubs are in Kazimierz) and two of the four main tourist attractions (in-city ones being the zamek and Kazimierz) are a salt-mine and deathcamp you need to visit on out-of-city excursions.
Warsaw, despite being an incredibly ugly city of blocks and graffiti, is still a nicer city than Krakow if you're coming at it from a 'world metropolis' perspective, because Krakow feels like a little university city but Wawa is Poland's Gotham, and you'll get bored of Krakow a hell of a lot quicker after a few years of living there than you will the capital.
I really despise Krakow, incase you hadn't guessed. Completely jebac Krakow.
Both international and national... a person who visits who can understand Polish is hearing a lot of people also talking about where to go next and/or wondering how to get there....
The first time I was in Krakow I really didn't like it.... (PRL... and it seemed more badly damaged by PRL dysfunction than some other places). After that I kind of like it in small doses, a few times I had to wait 10 or so hours for overnight train connections and it was fine... in recent years modernity has turned a lot of it into tourist slop though there are lots of nice things scattered around.
Last time I was there (kind of a conference a year ago) I was mostly away from the tourists troughs and that was nice.

That can be said about many European cities. It's more touristy now than it was when I first went 20 years ago, but then it's become a very popular place to visit so it's hardly surprising.

I like that Krakowians think their little university town is the centre of the universe but Varsovians quietly know their city is infinitely better. Because it's not completely tiny and you don't need to go to 'the Old Town' to grab a meal and a pint. I like that a lot, lol.
I also like the fact that property prices in Poland are drastically lower than in Western Europe, but then that's basically the main reason to live there, right?

See, that's what happens when you don't know much about Poland....
Kraków, for all its many faults, is both the spiritual seat of the Polish state (Wawel) and a source of much high culture (held in lower esteem than the desire 'to grabe a meal and a pint' by some but not everyone can appreciate higher ideas).
Personally, if I had to choose between the two I'd probably pick Warsaw for a number of reasons but I respect Krakow's importance in the Polish scheme of things since a cheap beer is not my be all and end all.
