except to point out that most migrants have not moved for economic reasons.

You continue to surprise. Very good, Mr. Ireland.

It's an exercise in soft power which all too often mutates into hard power when these..

Yes. This is correct.

This is a very important thing you've identified.

the Turkish guys that we had on PF were super cool

They hold grudges. Especially their women.

Tell me about it! I was once a member of a pan-Turanian internet board. :)

A Turkish colleague of mine once told me that they captured Vienna a long time ago. Over 100,000 of them live there. But they remember the Polish king.

Recently had an online run in with a Hungarian who's whole deal was Hungarian-Turkish solidarity.
He was like a Hungarian Crow but with Hungary-Turkey as the center of the universe rather than Serbia-russia..... based on some weird idea of unique Hungarian genetics....

Meanwhile, in the real world dna testing in the 1980s IIRC showed that a large majority of Hungarian citizens were Magyarized Slavs or Germans.... not that there's anything wrong with that and in most of Turkey ;it's very obviously a former empire with lots of genetic diversity and people who could pass for Polish and others that could pass for Chinese and pretty much everything in between.... there's even one phenotype that looks very much like Native Americans (esp women).

So many crazy people in the world....

DNA testing. *rolls eyes* Does anyone outside USA give a flying f*ck about them?

Our culture decides who we are, not some genetic nonsense. I had two best friends at the university - one looked like a Ghenghis Khan, the other like a Waffen-SS poster boy - both 100% Polish.

So many crazy people in the world...

Indeed. However, I wouldn't count Crow among them - he is only mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly, he knows a hawk from a handsaw.

I agree, cultural and linguistic identity are more important than genetics, but not everyone agrees.....

It would only be true racism if Slavic people were not Caucasians. Native Poles are 100% white.

Oh, so Hitler wasn't really truly racist towards Slavs when he considered them Untermenschen?

Native Poles are 100% white.

Tell that to American racists. You have no idea how many times I read "they're not white, they're slavs" about Poles.

Untrue, Ron!
You sound just like Whoopie Goldberg who said some years back that Hitler wasn't racist towards the Jews, since technically the Jews were white.

There is very little genetic or ethnic link between Hungarians and Turks. The same can be said for Bulgarians, though they were once part of The Ottoman Empire.

I agree, cultural and linguistic identity are more important than genetics, but not everyone agrees.....

Agreed, but I still think genetics plays a small part.

So true! Racism exists amongst white groups, Black groups and Asian groups too. It's not all about skin colour.....

Almost no linguists think the languages are even from the same family anymore despite some superficial similarities (vowel harmony, agglutination).

I still think genetics plays a small part

Of course it does. But I think cultural and linguistic identity are more important (and what European countries are failing to pass on in too many cases now....).

Racism no longer really has any practical meaning. Hysterical overuse has drained it and when I hear people use it unironically I just assume that the person has mental health issues.

Agreed.

You are completely correct, it is no longer about race but about cultures and religion.....the colour of your skin is no longer an issue, but too many politicians still play on that without understanding the true problems.

@Close, Maf.
The Budenz thesis has been disproven, however, both Hungarian and Turkish do share similar Uralic roots.

No, the current consensus is that Hungarian is from the Finno-Ugric family and Turkish from Altaic (not all linguists accept Altaic as a valid grouping).

There are structural and phonological similarities in the modern language but a lot of those are typological rather than genetic an the reconstructed proto-languages..... not so much.

Historical linguists group both families as distant, if hardly "kissing" cousins.
Finnish is much more closely related to Hungarian than Turkish, I will admit.
