Germany's genocide had a deep-seated, historical, above all ideological, underpinning...
The Holocaust had nothing to do with the historic hate of Jews by the catholic church in Germany and elsewhere. The Nazis blamed Jewish bankers for the loss of WW1, thus creating an "enemy from within" (hint, hint...) to point the finger at. And don't forget that the first victims of the system were social democrats, communists and disabled people who were all sent to the concentration camps long before the Jews.
