Hello,

I am looking for any information on the surnames listed above. My grandfather is Stefan Joseph Ratajczyk born in 1886. He married first wife, Jozefa (Josephine) and had children, Stanley, Cecelia, Frank, Steve, Alex. When she passed away, he went back to Poland and brought her sister, Helen (or Helena) back and they married. She had 2 children, Chester and Theresa. Jozefa and Helen's maiden name is Guzniczak. The the papers from the passenger lists, it states that Helen is from Mokre, Russia. I think it may be now known as Bacze Mokre, Poland. If anyone has any information regarding these families, please contact me.

RATAJCZYK: patronymic from rataj (freeholder, farmer not in the service of the squire); or topo-patronmyic for son of the chap from Rataje

GU-NICZAK: from guz (lump, tumour), perhaps guźnik was the nick of someone covered with lumps and bumps and his son got dubbed Guźniczak; alternatively, the son of someone from Guźnia.

Thank you so much for the information on this. Stefan was my grandfather and unfortuntely we cannot trace anything back to Poland. Josephine was his first wife and one of children was Frank, my uncle. My mother is from his second wife, Helena, Joesphine's sister. I am looking for birth and marriage certificates and to find out more about the Ratajczyk/Guzniczak linage. Do you happen to know more on the linage of this family line or where I could find out more information? I am on Ancestry.com and cannot find any records whatsoever. Thank you for your input.

Stefan was married 4 times, Josephine was the first wife, Helena second wife, Jozefa Chordik third and Stella Swendrowski the 4th. :-)
