Pietras from Opole, Poland. Help with information on Great Grandfather.

I need help finding information on my Great Grandfather Andrejz (Andrew) Pietras, born 1895 in Opole, Russia and came to the US in 1921. Last know residence was listed as Grudzonst, Poland but I don't think that was spelled correctly. Thank you for any help I can get.

You mean 'born 1895 in Oppeln, Deutsches Reich'...

Try to find the Civil Registration records for that year. If they survived the war, all the information you'll need is in there.

The second most common area for the Pietras surname is Opole Lublin, and that area used to be in Russia, so he probably was not from the Opole/Oppeln, that was formerly in Prussia/Germany.

It could be Grudziądz in Northern Poland as a guess from your spelling.

I only checked the LDS database quickly, and many Pietras listed there came from Germany. That's why I assumed Oppeln. But you're right, could as well be the other Opole. Thanks for pointing that out.

For the OP:
If you know the SSN of your ancestor (if he had one), you could try to find him in the Social Security Death Index and see where the SSN was originally issued. Then you could try to find his naturalization record in one of the courts nearby.

My great grandfather was Antoni Pietras from Zabrnie, near Debica and Tarnow, southern Poland. I was able to trace my family back to there. He moved to the US in 1907. You may want to look in that area as there are some people named Pietras in that area.
