Hello Polish people of the internet,

Do any of you know a Legacki?

Does the name mean anything? I tried looking for similar words in the dictionary but didn't find anything substatial.

Also, is there a difference between -ski and -cki? I was once told that the last name with one of those endings meant that they were a szlachta family. Is that true?

Thanks,
BarbaraD

There is no such easy rule. Yes, most of nobility had names ending -ski. But there were also -ski surnames which didn't belong to "szlachta". I have checked the list of nobility in russian part of Poland after Partitions and there is no one with the name Legacki or Legaski.

Have a nice day,
Barbara

LEGACKI: root-word legat (envoy or heir). Legacki probably emrged as a patronymic tag. No blue-bloods amongst Poland's Legackis, but szlachta membership was held by some bearers of similar-sounding surnames such as Lega and Legawski.

I know of a family, two sisters, a number of brothers (the one I knew is deceased)...father was a carpenter in Philadelphia.
Here's a site which has information on the family (it's an obituary)

Ken Legacki is a lawyer in Alaska. Dave has a son, also David who was a Navy Seal...he runs in marathons so you might find info for him that way. Good luck.

Legacki

LEGACKI: adjective from legat (legate, envoy); probably a patronymic nick identifying the envoy's son.
