From a search of Ellis island records one of my ancestors was shown to be from Liehajci Russia. Well, could not find anything with this town name. I suspect that this is a phonetic spelling of a non-polish speaking recorder. So, opinions liehajci = Lichacze? (near Przemysl)

It's possible that these names show the same place.. But there could also be other variations of the name...

Merged: Litchatzew/Lichacze?

Looking for a town in Grodno. Ship manifest says they came from Litchatzew, Grodno, Russia. Could this be Lichacze?

I am not an expert on the names of towns. While I have been looking for my father's home area, I've run across names that are new, names that are missing, and names that don't appear anywhere else.

If you are lucky enough to find a name that comes that close, consider it correct. Also, pronunciation and spelling are two different things. If it was Poland and it is now Lithuania or Russia, the pronunciation could be very similar but the spelling won't be. This is also true when the travel agents or clerks would type or write something on a document. Many times, the passenger couldn't read or write, and it was the clerks job to interpret what was being said. So, a third or even fourth language pronunciation/spelling could come into play.
