Just a few weeks ago, we, my cousin and I, in searching into some of my Aunt things, who has been moved into a home, and has lost her sight. We found two names and address, in Warsaw, and we don't know if they were on which side of the family, my Aunt's married side, or her, name, same as mine, before marriage. I did send off letters last week, and am still awaiting reply. I know mail takes ten days each way. What is the best way to check if the address are still good, or if a change of address is on record? When can I check for this information? I have in the past, sent off request for help, to several places in Poland, and never got any reply. Why could this be?

What ideas do you have that can help me on this.

Why could this be?

Did you send the letters and requests in English or Polish?

oh, he speaks no polish

So his profile says.
I was just thinking that if a letter came for me from Mongolia in Mongolian, although I'd be curious, I wouldn't pay for them to be translated.

I sent the letter in English, since I don't speak, read, or understand Polish. And Yes I did put stamps on them. I found on my visits to Poland, many, many people speak English, more than speak Polish around here. I don't have any way of sending letters in Polish.

I would like some good ideas, not just jokes.

A few years ago, mid to late 90 to 97. I know if these people lived at the address shown for some time, neighbors would know of them, if they moved, and to where they moved.

Here in the USA we have what is called a Criss Cross Directory, where you can look up address, and get phone numbers. If a large building, you can find most of the people living in that building. If single family neighborhoods, you can find who live next door, or down the street. Does Poland have such a directory? If yes, who can use it, and where do you go to use it? Please advise, if you know.

I wasn't joking.
I recommend getting your requests and letters translated and resending them.
There should be a translation service either in a larger city near you or on the internet.
It is not enough that more people speak English here than speak Polish there.

Why don't you ring them? Click here for the telephone directory.
Again I recommend having someone who speaks Polish with you when you ring them otherwise it could be a very short and completely misunderstood call.

Good luck Mike!

keep any letters short and to the point... include an e-mail address... maybe include a copy of a family photo, which includes someone they might recognize, so they know u are serious.

some folks might take a week or two before replying, some never do.

the problem with genealogy/family history is that u care, but perhaps the other party doesn't.

one of the posters on the forum might do a translation 4 u... just ask.
