My family name is Wopschall, Wobshall (and a few other similar spellings). My family is Jewish, from Posen, although there are other people with the same name who are Christian. I am having trouble finding more about my family in Poland before they came to the United States in the 1860s. My grandfather told me the name means Weave Shawl, because the family at one time were weavers who made Jewish prayer shawls and other woven goods. Does this sound right? I appreciate any information you can share. Thank you -- Reuven

Any information on Mojzesz Wagschal, and earlier alternate American spellings Wobshall, Wopschall, Wobshal, from Poznan. Thank you very much.
