What's your favorite Polish beer?

Really? "Pilsner Urquell" is a poor imitation of the original, which was unique in the world. The Czechs were absolutelylivid about it's destruction and subsequently took steps to protect their beer heritage. Sadlt the Pilsen brewery was scrapped in 1992 or thereabouts. This **** is now "brewed" by South African breweries (sorry if this has been noted on this thread already).

It was an oak cask stored lager,using Pilzen water (rather the point wouldn't you say) and Sauer hops. The casks stood 30 feet high vertically and the beer was stored for 9 weeks off the top of my head (probably wrong.

Now of course it is chemical shite from Poznan, Tychy and Pilzen. Another famous Czech beer that was barstardised and is now undrinkable is Staropramen. It will rot your liver.

Only Radegast, Budweiser and a few others are drinkable.

Does Poland have any good beer at all? This is a serious and honest question. For beer to be pasteurised it has to be quality in the first place, with what are today prohibitively expensive ingredients if not subsidised by the state, as Budweiser Budwar is.

I used to drink in a Polish club with a few of my mates in London, many years ago the beer was all bottled no draught. But they also had a Polish vodka which would blow your head off, The guys came from different parts of Poland from before the war. So I don't know were it came from, they called it Polish white spirit, they should have called it Polish white lightening. I have looked for it many time since, so I guess you are keeping over for yourselves.

More every year. The ones round here are the four from Ciechanow, Dawne (from Konstancin), Mazowiecki and Warszawiak. The Amber brewery up near Gdansk also do some excellent beers, my favourite from them is Zywe. And none of the beers I've just listed are pasteurised.

Kaszub Specjal from Bytów Goch is a pale lager which is a Microbrewery.

Not anymore, the brewery in Bytow closed down about four years ago. I was looking forward to having some when I went there in 2008 but no such luck!

I've browsed beeradvocate.com recently (thanks to somebody, who put the link earlier in the topic), and Perła is a good one, pretty good are £omża, Okocim Zagłoba, Okocim OK and Warka. Highly estimated there (A) are porters, but this is the kind I rarely drink, so I can't tell.

Good one was Żubr... but it was probably when it was brewed by Dojlidy, before its sale to SABMiller or whatever.

Yes. Żubr has really changed - it used to have a very distinctive hoppy taste but now just seems like Żywiec, Tyskie, Okocim etc, all pretty well indistinguishable from each other.

I think I've mentioned it already but try Ciechan - it's a little different from the rest.

Never tried Perla, but will. Ten years back when I tried them the other beers weren't bad. This Krakowian top fermenting beer seems interesting! Anybody given it a go?

The Brackie beer. As a matter of fact, I just finished the 8th bottle. Goes great with the yellow cheese. Or Koźlak. Or Piwo żywe. Good night.

Brackie is an acquired taste from Cieszyń. I find it a bit sweet and 'flowery'. It is fine on a really warm day but, other than that, there are other options for choice.

Perla isn't even the best of the Lublin brewery's beers. Lubelski pils is excellent but Zwierzyniec is sublime, by far and away my favourite pasteurised Polish beer. Unfortunately neither of them are available outside Lubelski....

A cold ciechan on a warm day hits my buttons every time.

Back on the beer this weekend for my good friend the Doctor's graduation ceremony. Will try that Zywe stuff and hunt out the above in the delis of Katowice........

You almost certainly won't find Zwierzyniec in Katowice. You might find Ciechan, the best place to look will probably be organic food shops and health shops. As for Zywe, the Carrefours in Warsaw have it. Also worth checking would be Piotr i Pawel and Bomi supermarkets.

Thanks for that - BTW the first is great (though eccentrically priced - some of their British beers are cheaper than Tesco, their wines are 2o per cent marked up....

While in PiP be on the look out for Fortuna Czarne or Fortuna Miodowe. The best beer from Wielkopolska! :)

Yeah, it is, but there is also a brand of beer called that way, both unrelated. I prefer the beer though. :) Ohhh, important info, it's NOT a lager! :)
