Please do not quote excessively

In fairness it's Admin who makes the rules, the mods have to go along with his decisions.

rational explanation for the limitations beyond 'google rankings!!!!!!'

I have come to the conclusion that this is the only rational explanation. Google doesn't like lots of repeated text from what I've read, and limiting the quotes ensures less repetition. Do YOU like to read a lot of repeating text?

Like when he gave you the sack. Pam

You were the worst mod this forum ever had.

Do not start baiting other members with personal abuse, there will only be one ending.

If you read the Notice about post scrolling.. the form doesn't require scrolling -it can be made sticky.

I have no idea what you mean by this. Not going to explain - research first then complain (not the other, Polish-like, way ; ) Hint - play with the checkbox near the Preview button.

Do YOU like to read a lot of repeating text?

I don't think there is any need to quote reams, but I can't see the harm in a few short quotes, it makes it far easier for members to follow the conversation as such. Clearly I'm not the only member who thinks this way either. Thanks for the replies. Again, if a reply is long and addresses multiple posters, using short quotes is fine even if it's over 3..

I prefer the Polish-like way ;) I can't find anything about post-scrolling, but no worries, I've survived without it.....

I'll hold you to that ;)

OK found it. That just stops the scrolling at a certain point though from what I can see. You can click on the post area and then when you scroll up you can see all the messages and can type at the same time (referring to them without quoting).

I remember this feature now. It made it difficult if a long reply was needed, as the post box ended up dominating the screen so you couldn't read much of what was written. Maybe this feature was introduced as a new way of ensuring we don't write lengthy replies ;) I couldn't get on with it personally but maybe others find it useful. Post box will not change in size if it's sticky.

I certainly don't mind as long as the individual quotes aren't super long.

@ Admin/mods

Sorry to be a pain but the quoting rules seem to change all the time.
Regarding this post of mine:

polishforums.com/uk-ireland/poles-allowed-latest-polonophobic-outrage-82660/8/#msg1639010

This was originally 2 separate posts but someone has merged the 2 posts together, so that now it contains 6 quotes. How do I know that someone else is not going to come along and decide that I am taking the p1ss regarding the quoting rules and put it in the bin and give me a warning? If the rules are for a maximum of 2 quotes per post, why has it been merged in the first place? Confused.

If a post has been merged to another similar thread it will clearly say "merged". I have never seen two posts merged together so this must be an error or bug
Chemikiem

The post has not been merged with another thread. I made 2 separate posts in the same thread, one after the other. Someone has made one post out of 2 separate ones giving a total of 6 quotes in one post. I am wondering why this was done given that it is meant to be 2 quotes per post.

Happened to me the other day, too. I had a post with three quotes and decided to post another one in the same thread after a few minutes because of the quote limit. Both posts were merged without the annotation that Vincent mentioned.
Chemikiem

the quote limit.

Yep, you did exactly what I did. I think I confused Vincent because I used the word merge, and he obviously took it to mean merging of threads and not just posts. It just seems bonkers that the rules state 2 quotes per post and staff are splicing together posts to give quotes far in excess of what is supposedly allowed.

I give up on getting clarification, but at least mods might think twice about whisking posts off to the bin for excess quoting now........

Merged:

Excessive quoting

So what are the rules concerning "excessive quoting" these days?

You have been told many times about your excessive quoting

Sorry, mods, but I don't always go back to my previous posts and if you edit them after some while then how am I supposed know that? I think it would be better if you'd simply make a new comment with a warning.

I always try not to exceed 5 quotes per post and it seemed you were OK with that so far. So now it's not OK? If that's the case then how many quotes one is allowed to put into a post?

Three like it always has been.
But then someone will push the envelope and go four, then five, then six.
The only way around three is to divide your post and make it into two posts.
The Admin and the Mods have told us old timers many times that the thread should read like a book.
When quotes exceed three it disrupts the flow of the thread.
The bigger problem is the same posters that take a thread OFF - TOPIC over and over and over without getting a lengthy suspension like in the old days.

Hope that helps remind everyone what we have been told a hundred times already.

One of the most ridiculous rules ( yeah, the Admin can set the rules as he wishes and I have the right to say what I think about them).

Disrupts the flow my as*

@Lenka, yeah, I agree - I don't buy that explanation about "disrupted flow" either lol :) I mean, what's the difference if I post a comment with three quotes and someone after me will post one with two quotes (5 quotes one after another) or whether I post a comment with four quotes and then another poster will post a comment with one quote (also 5 quotes one after another)? The "flow" will be the same *shrugs*

The Admin and the Mods have told us old timers many times that the thread should read like a book.

An internet forum isn't a book. If I want to read a book, I simply read a book and not discussions on an internet forum :)

For me three quotes is sometimes too little, especially if I'm discussing with a few people at once - I don't usually have time to wait for someone to post so I could post the remaining part of my comment. It's simply a pain in the ass. But I don't care about their made up reasons anymore, I just wanted to find out what's the supposed/official number of quotes per post.

I don`t mind the quote policy: not our forum, not our rules, simple. :):)

However, I find it funny when I make two consecutive posts and later on they are merged into one by the staff, creating a mega post with 7 or 8 quotes. :):)

I've seen two threads merged into one, but I've never seen two posts merged into one. Could you please point out on which forum thread(s) I can view one of these mega posts. Thanks.

but I've never seen two posts merged into one.

Your request corroborates my earlier vague suspicions - the merge is done automatically by the forum`s engine.

However, it is amasing you know nothing about it. :):):)

I am not making things up - I have seen it happen a few dozen times in my forum history.

Could you please point out on

I promise I will but not now coz it must take some time which I am lacking.
But I remember having two consecutive posts merged in original Dyrdymałki thread. Be patient.

Thanks.

It is so amasing you decided to investigate this matter further. :):):)

Agreed 100%.

I have been warned and penalised many times for "Over Quoting" , I really don't understand why this forum has a problem with that.

I know nothing about it because I've never done this, nor seen anyone else doing it. Farther more, I can't think of any reason as to why this would need to be done. Two threads merged yes, but two posts no.

It is so amasing you decided to investigate this matter further. :):):)

I'm hoping to get a screenshot, and then get it framed. Having one of these 'mega posts' would be like owning a Van Gogh, as they would be so rare.

Yes, I know. So it must be automatic. But it is a fact - why would I mention it at all if it hadn`t happened? :):):) You know me, I don`t make tall stories here. :):):):):)

I'm hoping to get a screenshot

I am working on it but it may take some time. Stay tuned. :):)

I'm hoping to get a screenshot,

How about a link? :):):)

But I remember having two consecutive posts merged in original Dyrdymałki thread

Here it is, I remember replying to two members in two seperate posts which were later merged into this one
polanda.com/off-topic/dyrdymalki-niczem-84834/123/#msg1832047

It is quite recent, encompassing the time I had been aware of the excessive quoting rule, so it was impossible for me to create such a post on my own. It must be the forum`s engine.

to be continued.... :):):)

No, Vincent isn`t playing games, he really didn`t know about it. There are more things in heaven and earth, Paulina, than are dreamt of in forum`s philosophy.

This forum has a bigger problem than multiple quotes. It's the absence of Dirk, Velund, and Poloniusz as well as low attendance frequency by Bobko, BB, and Lyzko.
johnny reb 48 | 7,091
3 Apr 2022 #89
The absence of dolnoslask - rozumiemnic - Ptak - SigSauer - Slavictor - goofy_the_dog - sledz and the rest of the positive happy go lucky members that stuck pretty much about subjects of POLAND, stuck to the rules and not their personal political opinions to try to steer the public is what is missing.

I'm lost for words... ;D

See ? we need more light humor like that.
Novichok 4 | 7,927

that stuck pretty much about subjects of POLAND

Poland is the most boring of all PF subjects even to the Poles themselves or Polish threads busier than the Chicago thugs robbing stores.
