How about the fight over Berwick?

Or the West Lothian question?

Could be academic before 2010, now that Labour in Scotland support a referendum on Independence.

Bring it on. The less of Britain that London has to subsidze the better :)

That's city with an S and an H.

The less of Britain that London has to subsidze the better

London could quite happily exist on its own without the rest of the country to have to deal with.

But The Treaty of Union was signed in 1707. Both sides have had multiple opportunities to rescind the treaty but the union remains intact. In all honesty, there would be few implications for Constitutional Law but the process of ostracising wouldn't be that hard. We have different legal systems after all.

Parcel of rogues etc

multiple opportunities to rescind the treaty

When ? - I can think of only two, 1715 and 1745.

If the necessary collective will was there to bring about its retraction, it would be done. Parcel of rogues indeed

Yep, thats democracy - seems to be heading that way now. :-)

Not so sure if it needs to be done but Salmond has been pushing this agenda for many a year.

Indeed Salmond has, its the raison d'etre of the SNP.
The SNP have been in power for just over a year now, look at the accomplishments - stunning.
All political pundits from all sides admit they have played a blinder so far.
Bodes well for the Independence referendum in 2010.

Sometimes u need to state the obvious :) Salmond speaks with conviction and is generating widespread support. He knows that he won't run out of steam

most english are not of polish origin
17,000 poles came to england after the war compared to a population of 50 million thats nothing.
the biggest influx of poles in england came in the 1900's when 300,000 eastern european jews came to england,100,000 of them were polish.

It was more like 170,000 Poles who remained in the UK after WW2, Although the total is 228,000.

The Poles here in the UK are not GENERALLY hated - there are some individuals that hate anyone who isn't english - but they are few and far between.

But on the whole most people I know would welcome any of my Polish friends into their homes (and hearts in my case)

exactly, i have put it the same many times myself, there are people on here who just like to post 'well the english actually hate the polish' just to start something, what they are posting is utter rubbish.

Granted, there is a minority of people who are biggoted and don't like anybody who is foreigh, its not just Poles, after all the Polish are no more special than any other nationality in the world. In every nation around the world there are idiots who do not understand or are to ignorant to really understand how they themselves actually feel!!!!

I think in this case there is a bit of the old 'polish victim' going on and a few iditots who post biggoted texts. Pretty simple, maybe to much so but hay its about opinions :)

Come to Australia! Where brits are the annoying drunken fools with backpacks and poles are exotic mysterious people with an interesting accent. No one will force you to clean toilets and drive taxis here, that is for the Indian guy with the masters in computer science! Pay rates are good, the cost of living is lower than UK and the quality of life is excellent! The plane ticket will probably kill you though, expect to pay about 4500-6000zl

In fairness I think when you live in another country you ought to learn their language, not visa versa, I live in Poland, I therefore, take the responsibility of learning Polish. It is a bit unfair to to suggest English people should learn Polish. Although I understand your sentiment, English speakers (not just English people) generally are bad at learning foreign languages, I think, because today it is the main language and tomorrow, when it is Mandarin or Hindi I wonder will it be different?

Really? I do not mean to be insulting but your English is not all that great.

Excuse me, I must have pressed the wrong quote button.

sunka.

Fair enough, I have spell check set up on this, I can't spell, thank goodness for it.

I have worked in different places in England and years ago I was referred to as a F!"king Paddy Bast"£$£ by some English people (now it is kinda fashionable to be Irish). I find that some Polish will have to go through that as well, as I see it the Poles are the new Irish, the main difference is that Polish people don't generally speak perfect English (ha ha, I am not saying that Irish people do either) , you gave us your language and we gave you back literature ;)

But there is no bad blood between Polish and English, so I am very interested about this topic.

I hope so too.
It is amazing how people project their narrow understanding on you. Who or what you are is almost immaterial.
I suppose categorising is a simple way to form order out of chaos.

How about something like this:

It's all part of a cultural exchange programme by which Australia gets drunken Brits with backpacks, and we get their drunks with backpacks. Is the bit about backpacks really important?

Keeping Walkabouts in business since 1999.

The backpacks just make them easier to identify.
