Polish kids in UK education system

I disagree, but I grew up in Poland, so many things don't seem to bother me.

Anywho, my best friend was Polish, she was the one who introduced me to "polishness" and well... I guess I didn't even acknowledge Poland as a country before then.

So anyway, she was very intelligent, articulate, quick-thinking, had been here for about 6 years (we were in college), and she was studying Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Sociology A-levels with me.

She didn't do very well in the written exams due to the fact she was a) dyslexic and b) lost interest (she discovered the circus... I'm not making this up! good, quick, immediate money rather than years more of toiling in university). But she COULD'VE done.

I think Poles are more inclined to work or gain a skill than go into further education in the UK, am I wrong? Probably, most generalisations are wrong.

Dyslexia not recognised in Polish universities, they consider it a form of stupidity.

Maybe it is just a myth,a form of cheating as an english proffessor recently announced.

No mate,trust me,its no myth,what it is is a serious ball ache. I was tested for my reading age at 7, I had a reading age of 13 but I spell like a 6 year old,still. I can proof read pretty much anything an pick out the mistakes but when writing simple words such as their or feild I fek up,often starting words half way through,ie fway then adding hal to make halfway....its a larf though :)

It can be reading disorder,not specifically dyslexia.

my brother was kicked out of primary school and labelled a bully by the teacher who actually bullied him because at the time it wasnt recognised as a learning disability (thats what they call it)my now 22yr old brother has dyslexia and my youngest brother whose 15 has it as well ...

EU is in full integration now shouldn't take much longer than 15 years, the EU HOPE'S!!!! To tame these wild dogs.

My brother was told by most of his teachers that he was stupid. He was put into the bottom set with the other kids who were slow, stupid, lazy, traumatised or dyslexic. One science teacher recognised what his problem was (not a teacher of English).

He now has a phd and spells well only with a lot of hard work and spell-checkers. He sometimes texts me and asks me if we'd like to go out for a bear. I usually say yes because he earns enough to pay more than what is really his fair share of drinks!

There was a recent survey by an english proffessor who almost demolished the case of dyslexia and made some interesting observations.

Dyslexia seems to be an umbrella term to describe more than one condition. My brother's spelling is atrocious, but that's not from a lack of reading, short attention span, hyperactivity, bad short term memory or any of the other things mentioned in the article.

It does look as though money is thrown at the symptoms rather than the causes.

I have also read that there is more dyslexia amongst English-speakers than with speakers of languages with more phonetic alphabets. We know that if you read a Polish word, when you know the rules, you can be pretty sure how it should sound, which is not the case with English.

Exactly.It is an umbrella.If there happens any thorough scientific research many people will start screaming.

Being not so sharp is one thing, but being as smart as you, and still marrying a dumbass is... well, stupid.

Poland's education system is a lot more intense and less slack than in North America, i'm not sure about the UK though.

Parrot fashion education where you get the pupil to cram facts from an early age was always the Russian way of doing things. There are advantages and disadvantages to this. In England the primary education system tried to get away from all this and would not even teach the times tables. Now, some of this former rote learning has come back in to fashion. Learning off by heart is one reason why Poles and Russians are not very good at the post graduate level because they are not taught to think for themselves and are therefore unable to create self though, simply a must in Msc and especially Phd study areas.

I'm half Polish but I'd hazard a guess to say I'm probably smarter than some and I'd even go so far as to say I'm probably smarter than you. Improbable you say? as to PL people who work hard in foreign countries ... they buy flats (why not in great UK) and and invest money here ... in 10 years time they will be back and will be owners and no immigration will clean his toilets himself will rent his flat form pakistan people who I prefer more than him. as to culture ... who adpots English culture there ... nobody Indian have their Pakistan people have their so I don't think it is attractive ... it is just place to make money.

English school kids are not dumb. Thats a horrible thing to say. Pitting one nationality of children against each other. Also english kids don't grow up and think 'Oh I'll get a job just because I am English.' They still have to work for it. Why do you hate English children so much?
