Studying in Poland at the Uni of Warsaw for 1 semester.

I'm thinking of going on a student exchange scheme to study history for 1 semester at the University of Warsaw.

I speak no polish but I am always willing to learn and very interested in the country.

Can anyone tell me more about UK students in Poland, do they manage ok, what is the University of Warsaw like and how about the living costs in Warsaw?

I don't know any British students here but I know a fair few foreign students from the medical academy and they seem to get on just fine. The university of Warsaw is very good and this is a good place to see the effects of history.

In terms of cost of living: a one room apartment (about 30 square metres) in decent condition in the city centre (within ten minutes by bus of the university) will be between £200 and £250. Go out into the suburbs and that can drop below £150 (but you'll spend more on taxis). A pint of beer is anything from 80p (in student type places) to £1.85 (in posh places). A meal out costs (per person) £1.00 (for just something filling to eat, especially veggie food or student cafes) to £10 (for a goodish two course meal and a beer/drink) to £25 (three courses in a really good place and half a bottle of wine). A monthly travel pass (good on all trams, buses and the metro) is £12 and a six-mile taxi ride about £3. You will be able to live fairly well on £500 a month but you could survive on less.

The good thing is that as a native speaker of English it is fairly easy to pick up work teaching English (just stick to the conversation classes) and even with no qualifications you should be able to charge about £10 for 60 minutes no problems.

It's easy to survive in Warsaw without speaking Polish.

the food is meat and potatoes and the students are nice, probably similiar to what you are used to. Poles seem glum and depressed (especially since winter is approaching) but give them some alcohol on a friday night and you will see a magical transformation of character...

Hi, I am a 5th year medical student from Australia, and would like to do part of my elective in Poland at the end of 2009. I know that some of the Polish universities have programs set up with EU countries - but do they except random elective students? Would it be easier to apply to the universities with English programs? (I speak Polish, but are these unis more likely to accept me for a month?) thanks for any advice! beata.
