It's hard to answer this but Mr Marmite got a good one with the zebra crossings. They are hardly ideally located. The road planning dept here in Gliwice had a bad day when looking at the strategic placement aspect of them.

It's no different in Wroclaw.

Translators?? That manage to reduce a 20 minute conversational exchange in Polish to 2 sentences in English! What was the rest of the conversation content?? Should I be paranoid here?? Were they really saying horrid things about me? Cause they sure as hell said more than anyone's prepared to tell me!!

lol,you get used to it,i remember my ex and a taxi driver chatting for ages,I caught enough to not get paranoid but the "translation" was a similar 2 sentence affair....I think sometimes they just like the sound of their own voices :) (as half the world does..)

I can't get used to it...it's frustrating, irritating and rude! And I'm even more frustrated that I can't learn the language fast enough.....and don't even consider telling me to un-wind with a smoke!!! Or i might have to unleash some of the few Polish words I DO know...!

nom kay or kay rank kay

It works?? Is that to help me learn Polish, speak Polish, understand Polish or chill out that I will never get to grips with Polish???

Buddhist?? Dodgy ground here....for me? Wrong religion...I'll stick with Our father, focussing really hard on the forgiving others their sins!!!
And perhaps there's another useless thing in Poland?? Confession!! Seems to me , it's ok to sin away all week, as long as you go to confession after...then you can do it all again next week!!

joo who.......This is normal, I have been here 5 years and from the first week I learnt the following: "Why say it in one word when you can use 20!!!" There are no direct answers that do not involve, a relation, the people next door, the neighbours, the neighbours dog, the priest, the hospital, Zus etc....and you only asked where the nearest Chemist is!!!!!

Yep, although I am basically a solo artist who collaborates with others every now and then - I am thinking of getting a second member to do the parts I feel are not my strongest point - but I'm doing pretty well; just finished a new tune which should be able to do something as it's catchy, danceable and just has a pleasant feel over it. Every now and then I wander a bit off of the TripHop path...

M-G (by the way, to avoid any confusion; I am not that Flying Dutchman...I was just taking a shower, hence the delay in reaction)

I have just received a full page view of the site. i love your taste in *****. not much to speak about myself i dont do much after a car accident and a permanent brain injury leaving epilepsy. dont know if you know about it but its great for short term memory which you dont have. dont even remember the last weeks previous arrangement of tv shows. i used to love reading. the best i can do now is an article in the newspaper.

OK, not so much useless, but fascinating.... padded leather doors. What's with them in Poland?

I've travelled quite a fair bit, and have only ever seen them in Poland... heavy doors - usually in older style office buildings - with a leather padded / studded panel. Anybody know what I'm on about?

I think it was supposed to look fancy and in blocks have some sort of noise insulation.

That's what I figured. I'd not seen these doors in Russia or anywhere else in Central / Eastern Europe that I've visited.

Funny the quirky things that you notice...

Yep, they are not in Lithuania either.

Maybe it's cause the place is a mad house :)

padded leather doors

some installed it as soundproofing and also for their thermal value.
Other did it because they thought it looked cool.

the ban on registering right hand drive cars

those cars are freaking useless in poland. why would you even want one?

because cars in the UK are more than 50% cheaper than Poland + in better condition ...thats why we want to register rhd cars here.

If that were the reason (price and condition) you could easily buy a car in Germany of France, left hand drive and all. It's downright dangerous to drive a rhd in Europe or a lhd in the UK, for obvious reasons.

I concur ;

electric sockets...mine keep falling out...new flat 3 years old
Wine prices....Laughing Magpie Darenberg Estate £10 or 130pln in shops...

driving....indictators / red lights / parking /spaces /what are they?
car lights on all year, all day
paying toll between katowice + krakow when the road is being rebuilt for 2 years now

dogs.....labradors living in flats from 35sq metres is just cruel / shitting wherever
ZUS / tax costs
gilette razor blade prices being twice as expensive as uk
