OK, so are you saying this guys a creep then? Because that's what I think he is.

Yea, creepy huh?

True, but we don't have female genital mutilation as a "custom" here in the US and it is a custom in Africa....I'm just wondering, not trying to be offensive.

mmost liely but not necessarily. how does he treat your girl? i've seen a similar thing in the past, a couple of times.. and in the long run it seem to work contrary to conventional thought.. i have no idea how to explain it but i've seen the most tender care and love in such relationship.. if you're creeped out.. put your foot down.. you're the adult here.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, we know of quite a few 1st generation Polish Americans (we don't know them well though) that seem to have this age gap and they have quite happy marriages. But we've met them all after they were married for a few years, and don't really know for how long the courtships lasted. You know, did they meet at 18 and 32 and get married at 20 and 34? Or did they meet at 16 and 26? I just don't know. He actually is a super nice guy and if she were already 20 or 21, and lived a little, I don't think anyone would have a real problem with it.

By the way, I'm only a cousin anyway, sadly it's not my job to put my foot down. The whole thing started out with him being her math tutor. As soon as it seemed to be turning into anything more there would have been a new math tutor if it were in my house!

If she also lives in the U.S. and they were to have sexual relations, it could be considered statutory rape, depending on the state. What do her parents have to say about this?

not at 16.. not even in one state.

Are you saying that 16 is the age of consent in all 52 states?

Michigan the age actually is 16, but if you are over 18 and with a 16 year old even if the parents know about it and allow it someone else can report it...anyway I really don't believe they are having sex. At least I seriously hope not!

they may report it but the state has no interest, per say.

well, unless you count puerto rico and canada. lol the there also is iraq.. :D

Under Utah law, a 14-year-old can consent to sex in some circumstances. But sex is not considered consensual if a person under 18 is enticed by someone at least three years older.

in that case there is a problem even if they are happy and he is genuine.

Anglo73 - I don't think he is a creep for this. But - I don't know him and you do, and you say is

He actually is a super nice guy

he can go to jail..yes

your not considered an adult untill your 18

If somebody older than that has a relationship with a younger person plan on
going to jail, even if you give her 1 beer and dont even touch her you still can be charged.

I dont see a problem with this.. yes, he is older, but only 10 years and at 16 I think she is old enough to make up her own mind if she wants to date him.

If it wasn't for it being illegal there for her to have sex with him, I'd agree.

Over here, I wouldn't see the problem at all.

all but two states require a couple be age 18 in order to marry without parental consent. Nebraska sets the age at 19 and Mississippi at 21.
Most states however need a consent of both parents or guardians if under 18
