I forget how much a pint was but a ten pack of cigarettes was 92p

I could buy a complete under age smokers pack for less than a £1.00, thats 10 Benson and Hedges a box of matches and a some mints. I really am a couple of years older than you.... In any case how can you relate sterling to Irish currency?

He has problems, I was almost happy that Ireland voted 'Yes' just to imagine the expression on his ugly face hahahaha.

hes a sad little fcuker alright. theres many a poster here that i dont like but this guy takes the biscuit, ahh actually he takes the entire tin. Sad, sad little nothing person....

I can remember getting a pint for a pound during happy hour, that was way back in 1995-96 mind you. Poland still has some cheap places but I'd have to go there and see how the prices have changed. I have Biedronka in mind. I used to get a pretty sizeable shop there done for 80PLN when it was PLUS. Now it's typically around 300PLN for a big shop in Tesco.

Biedronka

Apparently Biedronka has a bad reputation i cant understand it, they have great T-bags, 6 PLN or so for a hundred. Liptons are up around 14 PLN per hundred. Its full of scum but so waht this dude harrassed me yesterday for sopme beer money. I gave him 5 PLN as i drove away i just wished id filmed the whole eppisode and uploaded it here it was quite funny. perhaps next time.

The Plus shop another personal favorite, Aldy and Biedronka are killing them off around here.

Well there have been several court cases about them mistreating their workers--perhaps that has something to do with it!

Exactly, they have Saga (a Unilever brand) and Lipton as you said. Tea and coffee are really well-priced. What else? Fruit and veg are much cheaper than in the UK, in Biedronka and in the stalls. You can pick up good cuts of meat for much cheaper than in a deli. It's one of these places where they can somehow reduce the price of brand names.

Indeed the old "when i was a nipper" old fart speech

my first round... four beers... cost 1pound. that would be about 1974.
my mum took almost half my pay packet... 5pound !... for housekeeping.

in the uk recently i set aside 1pound for each item... bread, milk etc.

Tram/bus tickets here in Wroclaw don't seem to go up in price very often.

ciggies, we know are tied in to some rule or other.

places like Biedronka are now the norm for many people

Despite reading recently that wages are going up (thenews.pl)... i've seen no sign of it.

Prices in Poland really vary according to the season. It can be a matter of days when you can see a difference in sth as simple as a cauliflower. One week it was 2PLN and the next it was 6PLN for the same size. Strawberries are another prime example.

Exactly, it's always worth checking though. Most vegetables don't vary too much in price and the quality in Poland is high.

Some of the delis here are overpriced.

Nah it all depends on the weather, Tomatoes were considerably high at the start of the season due to lack of rain. the same with Cauli and Stawberries but they always start off expensive and level off at around 5 pln / kilo, i bet you wish you were back for that Justy.

Strawberries

Isn't it like that everywhere? If the crops were good for farmers, if the year was good then prices will be lower. Since every year and season greatly waries in here than those prices are also changing rapidly..

Yeah, pretty much. Still, Poland is the focus of the discussion. I don't paying good money for strawberries, they are mighty tasty.

Well.. I don't really trust anything anymore, I dunno what have been gm'ed and what haven't. All these strawberries look too much alike and take too much time to stall, hence I smell something's fishy. In good old days strawberries were getting too old pretty quickly so you had to eat them just after buying them. Now they look the same after a week or two in the fridge... dodgy stuff

I can remember back in the UK when a quid would buy you a decent motorbike , a rubber overcoat to wear on the bike , three pairs of good boots , three stone of monkey nuts , and a ticket to see George formby at the palace theatre....those were the days eh....?

Think they used 'Guineas' in that era perhaps ?

LOL

Yes, but advances in commercial refrigeration means that fresh food is picked earlier and can be stored longer. GM food doesn't <I think ? > make food last any longer ? More that it produces more hardy and plentiful crops.i.e higher yields etc.

Not sure strawberries have been GM'd anywhere yet :)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetically_modified_food

But I think you may be talking about 'Irraditaion' which is supposed to make food last longer
and you can usually see examples of this sort of food cos you can buy say, some strawberries in a plastic container and the ones on the top look great and there may be a couple that have some mould on the bottom.....but I am not an expert. When 'Irradiation' first came out, there was a big uproar about it....

I don't agree with GM foods but you will find it is in the food chain already in many Countries and you don't even know you are eating it. e.g. Soya is used widely etc etc. The biscuit you ate more than likely has a GM in it :)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_irradiation

I bought some Polish tomatoes at my local supermarket the other day and they were the freshest, most natural looking and the tastiest tomatoes I had in a long time.

:)

what you mean by that? it is true i miss Polish fruit and veg, absolutely no comparison to what you get in UK, so much more tasty. plus my folks grow their own strawberries, black currants, cherries, all the veg... you name it. i'm defo going for at least 2 weeks next summer.
