Life / Why do a lot of Polish people stare and why is good personal hygeine shunned? [108]

London public transport smells horrible. Not all the time, not all places, but I'm thinking the Central Line in rush hour or a typical crowded bus. Sweat, vomit, little old ladies unwashed for months, unkempt hair extensions smelling of old hair oil and God knows what else - why are then some of you so surprised to catch a little whiff of BO on Polish public transport?

I tried using public transport in Poland once in the summer and couldn't do it again as the smell was horrific, Probably comparable to any other city anywhere in the world but as I Never use public transport I wouldn't know. I'm talking about when you see people in shops etc smelling potently. Most of my friends in the UK work in heavy manual jobs and they never smell so hard manual labour is no excuse as BO can be prevented with anti perspirant. With regards to showering in my opinion showering twice a day is necessary as you don't wan't to put sweat and a whole days worth of filth in your bed at night, and when you wake up in the morning its only natural to have a shower before you go to work.

Nah Poznań... Well drivers from Poanań are the most aggressive ones I ever known. Theit usual style of driving is offensive and dangerous. They are also impolite and usually do not help each other in troublesome traffic situations...

Indeed they treat their cars as externalization of their selfish ego. An every stretch between traffic lights is used as speed contest, a matter of death or live where you're to obliged to prove you have bigger balls than other drivers...

I did wonder as I spent yesterday in Warsaw and other drivers actually showed a degree of courtesy which I thought was rather strange.

Law / Questions about gaining a Polish citizenship and the process of getting one. [29]

Why do you want polish citizenship? I'm not sure how long you can stay on a visa but I have an american friend who books a flight home every 3 months gets a stamp and returns, He's been here for 3 years with no problems. A flight to the UK every few months will probably do the trick as its outside shengen.

Life / Why do a lot of Polish people stare and why is good personal hygeine shunned? [108]

Couple of quick questions and i'm in no way trying to be derogatory

If I drive through poznan people always pull up along side and stare at me and then try to make me race them off the lights? Is this normal?

People also stare in suprermarkets, Usually the skin headed people and i had always put it down to the effects of drug taking. (i'm not paranoid several of my English friends have noticed this before)

Also why is the usage of aftershave, having 2 showers a day and the gelling of hair seen as a homosexual act? One of my friends here laughs at me and tells me that he only showers every 3 days and women love it and that by washing it puts women off. Is this usual behavior as several of my Polish friends have said this?

Just wondering.....

Life / Top 3 Most Important Things about which polish dentists will LIE to you bigtime [46]

You got robbed, Can you post the name and address of the dentist so other poznan expats don't make the same mistake? I just had all my teeth sorted for less than 1000 pln, fillings, root canal, an implant. Going back next week to get them whitened :D (and contrary to popular belief, well my friends here i'm not gay even though i want nice white teeth)

Life / How to take the driving test in Poland? [20]

If you don't mind me asking how old are you? I have a friend who is 20 and drives a mercedes 190 cosworth and he pays around £600 a year for insurance, He does live in a very low risk area though, If you have any relatives parents who live in the sticks it might be worth insuring the car at their address? My car is registered at my parents address and my insurace is less than £400 a year comprehensive with a yearly green card on a group 19 car.

Life / City heating system, any ideas on how it works? [15]

I have thermostats on each radiator and some strange digital box bolted to the middle of it. My apartment was built in 2000, In winter it was ok as i just set the radiators on low but i've been trying to dry washing which seems nearly impossible without radiators that work.

I have one set of pipes in the bathroom behind a tile and also another set in the utility room.

Life / City heating system, any ideas on how it works? [15]

Quick question regarding the heating in my flat, Its on the city heating system with a blue pipe and a red pipe coming into the building as opposed to a boiler, I havent had the heat on for a few months and now I can't get any heat to come from the radiators?

Any ideas how this system works?

Travel / Taking a car to Poland for Vacation help [13]

Personally, looking at the prices of elises in the states where they are an expensive car I would fly to the UK buy one like this

cgi.ebay.co.uk/1997-LOTUS-ELISE-GREEN_W0QQitemZ220424735949QQcm dZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item3352568ccd&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 &_trkparms=65%3A7|66%3A2|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A2|294%3A50

Drive it around europe for a few months and export it to America to sell for a tidy profit thus paying for your holiday.

Life / How to take the driving test in Poland? [20]

I can put you in contact with some people who would buy an old 6 cyl zimmer, I know some of the drifters here who love the 2.5's as they are quite rare in Poland.

Travel / Taking a car to Poland for Vacation help [13]

Ah fair enough, worth bringing then but do you realise that roads here in Poland are terrible My 7 series BMW often hits the floor in some places as is the quality of driving and it would be sad to hear that such a nice car got ruined on Polish roads or by the sheer incompetence of other drivers. Have you got access to a lockable compound to keep it in once in Poland as cars do get stolen here and often vandalised by the local feral low lifes who are jealous of other peoples apparent success?

Why do you want to bring an American car to Europe for your holiday? Its not as though American cars are better than their European counterparts now is it?

Also you could probably get car rental for around £600 per month which will include insurance etc,

Just out of interest how much are you paying for shipping?

Life / How to take the driving test in Poland? [20]

I wouldn't trust an old citroen to that sort of trip, I would look at an old VAG diesel, ie passat etc or find a cheap bmw with the 2.5 6 cylinder M50 engine, Not the cheapest to run but really reliable and you could sell it for a profit in Poland and fly home, I sold a 1991 bmw 325i here last year for well over a grand after paying £300 for it in the UK with a few months T&T left.

Life / How to take the driving test in Poland? [20]

Thats why i used to use vegetable oil, kerosene, and red in my old £100 shed. I got stopped and dipped and they seized the car but after clocking up tens of thousands of miles in it i wasn't overly bothered, £200 fine and the loss of a worthless car for years of cheap driving.

Diesel is cheaper in all european countries, currently in Poland it is 3.60 pln which is about 70p a litre, Petrol is 4.30 pln which is around 80 - 85p a litre, Get something with a huge fuel tank as fuel in the euro zone especially germany works out at nearly £1.50 a litre, I usualy fill up at Dover with 110 litres and just about make the Polish border.

Here is one of the schools which speaks english but i will ask my friend about the other, zdajprawko.com

Life / cheaper international calling from Poland [30]

If you have the internet I would try Vonage, i pay £6.99 per month for unlimited calls to the uk and 2p per minute to other countries and have an english landline number with a proper normal telephone plugged in and it is really clear. You simply get a box which plugs into a spare port on your router which gives you a telephone plug.

Can't you just exchange your uk licence for a polish one? then you have 20 points to spend as you wish. With a polish licence your insurance in the uk will be expensive though..

Life / "Why bother!" - Experiences of life in Poland... [47]

I tried to get a contract phone here, Took in my UK bank statements proving that I could easilly afford the 150 pln per month and they still refused as my document from Urzad Miasta expires in 2012,

I also got loads of hassle from the police after being stopped in my car (UK registered) for not having a Polish registration document. I showed them my MOT certificate, Insurance Certificate and V5 and they charged me 100 pln for not having polish documents, How ******* stupid are these people.

Love / Polish girls attitude - what should I know about the behaviour of Polish girls? [30]

I'm not really sure if Polish women are better looking than portugese women but one thing is for sure they will treat you badly, try to control everything you do, be rude to your family, try to take you for every penny you have. They will expect you to spend every waking moment visiting members of their family and if you have a car you will be expected to ferry members of their family around at antisocial hours with no thanks in return.

I think that just about sums it up, so best of luck to you.

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

The typical complex 90% of Polish guys appear to have, I suggest you go over there and knock 10 bails of **** out of him for being such a provactive, mentally unstable poor excuse of a man. Seriously if he is thinking like this he is clearly unstable and needs sorting out.

Anyway condolences for being caught up in such a **** situation. Maybe some of the expats on here could pay this guy a visit on your behalf....

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

Polish women are generally very deceitful and this sort of thing is normal, I wouldn't worry so much and just thank your lucky stars that you won't see her again as she would have ruined your life guaranteed, They really aren't to be trusted.

Try french girls, they are great fun.
