interesting points noimmigration, i'm not sure that you should be so quick to tout the "deeds" of britains past as your own, perhaps a term other than "we" would be more accurate when discussing ww2 heroics. Regardless of that, if you do use the term "we" then you should be equally willing to take the blame for the misdeeds of Britains past as well, including events leading up to ww2 which allowed Poland to be ransacked in the first place.

However you do make an excellent (albeit indirectly) that it behooves a nation to develop itself and its people first and foremost before it should rely on "mercenaries." I knew many Poles in London and the surrounding area that were making crap money, living in squalid flats and the firms they were slaving for were bathing in sterling.

Perhaps the problem is more to do with the monopoly that Big business interests have on government policies. And although many (not all) Poles are working in entry level positions or in mills and factories (and don't kid yourselves many are really being taken advantage of) for a pittance, it is still WAAAAAYYY better than what they can earn in Poland.

Don't blame people for wanting a better life. Take this up with those representing you in parliament, the domino effect has to start somewhere.

Y'know Paul, your post gave me pause to remember a few situations from my stay in UK:

For some reason I'm leary of it. I worry that it's just big business lobbying the gov't to try and get more workers to come in and work on the cheap. I am probably just being a worry wart, as you'd have to wonder who'd pay the huge expense to travel so far and then be taken advantage of.

to be honest, the situation was really, really tough on my mom and i don't think she ever got over the hurt.

My advice to you is to go home and go home and make a new start.

A child should be raised with two parents, I know this all too well. I would never want anyone to have to live like my mom had to. The pressure and abuse she felt definitely had an effect on me. Only if you have a very, very, supportive family could I encourage you to have this child. If that isn't the situation then don't. A child deserves the right upbringing and if that's not possible then don't be selfish and don't be a coward and don't bring a child into this world simply because you're afraid not to. I'm sorry to be harsh but I know this situation too well.

You need to HONESTLY evaluate what kind of situation you could offer a child. Yes of course you would love your child, but you must think about the day to day needs and challenges that would be involved.

People like to imagine the summer without imagining the mosquitos if you know what I mean. You really have to choose the season that will be best for you to develop in.

What kind of support would you have for you and for the child? These are difficult questions that demand honest answers. I can only advocate choosing what's best for a child, sometimes that's to not be put in a crap situation but i don't know your situation.

If you do plan on keeping the child then this guy MUST be held responsible. You may want him to be happy but it sounds like he's happy to ruin lives and take no responsibility for his part.

My feelings are you shouldn't take on a responsibilty that you can't handle. Be honest with yourself in asking whether or not you can be a single mother, and for how long, and what your long term goals are.

Whatever you choose, be proud and you be your own judge, your life is your choices, the rest of us are just talkers. I wish you the best in your life.

One could argue that the the UK as a country (and people) benefitted from exploiting other lands for cneturies. True modern Englanders (is that the term) should not be blamed for this fact, nor should they take credit for others' deeds from the past mind you, however it does justify on a macro level this "invasion."

But when it's all said and done the ones to be pissed at are in government and are the employers in either society.

If I were English, I'd be thinking "how could the government sell our culture down the river like this?"

I didn't get that message from your first post. The post wasn't about racism or bigotry that poles have encountered abroad but you steered it in that direction so i called you on it. Although I admit it was somewhat underhanded so i do apologize for that.

But besides that, stating that poles face challenges abroad due to the aforementioned seems like you're trying to right one wrong with another.

Now if you were to mention the looks poles get while in predominanantly (99%) noncaucasion countries then you'd be making a valid comparison as this would be a similar scenario. However all that still would have no real contribution to the discussion as to whether or not poles have racist tendancies towards non-caucazoid (in this case negroid [bio terms here]) people.


Actually to make assumptions and ascertations based on the difference of one's skin could be viewed as racial stereotyping (broadly) hence the question of racist behaviour and attitudes.

I've met class acts from uk, poland, usa, canada, scotland and ireland and also crap characters from the aforementioned places (except scotland, i've never met anyone i didn't like from scotland).

argh I don't know if this pisses poles off but it sure as hell gets on my nerves, i never use my na's and za's and u's correctly. and when i speak polish it's always in this translated kind of way where the words are correct but it just doesn't sound right. if it kills my ears then it's gotta wound theirs something awful.

Poles like their status symbols (as do many) and the status symbol of choice is a German engineered vehicle.

I can't comment on the most popular of them but i'm sure someone with more info can.

Skodas are quite popular (some would say too) and have a good reputation as they are part of the VW group, there are tons of Fabias and Octavias on the roads.

Daewoos are also rather popular (in Sląsk anyhow), i've no idea if they're still being made but i see tons everyday.

The Peugot 307's are also very common as are the Renault Laguna and Megane.
Not too too many citroens though.

I'm surprised I don't see more Hondas and Toyotas but they don't seem to have the pull the german cars do. I am seeing more and more Mitsubishis though, which for some reason i find surprising.

I think Volvo is still regarded quite highly and it does have the exclusivity appeal as well.

American cars in Poland, well aside from Chevies, it's a rich man's (or a well connected one's) world.
