Travel / Warsaw bar scene [12]

I'll be in Warsaw in December, during the week, Tues, Wed, Thur. What bars, clubs, etc do you guys recommend?
I've read some reviews on the web, but was looking for some first-hand recommendations.
I'm only there for a few days so I wan to use my time wisely.
Also, is there anything that I should know, as far as customs, etiquette, etc, that might be confusing to me while I'm out on the town.

Travel / Warsaw bar scene [12]

Thanks for the info everybody.
A few have mentioned the dress code thing and getting turned away at the door. What should one wear to get into these places? I'm not into wearing extremely dressy clothing for a night of partying. Are jeans and a nice shirt OK?

Also, I'm from the U.S., not Poland, so will this get me turned away at the door?
Thanks in advance for all the help.

Travel / A few more questions (about Warsaw bars, dress code, conversations) [2]

Hi,

I have a few more questions regarding my December Warsaw trip.
A lot of people have mentioned a dress code to get into the clubs in Warsaw. What kind of clothes are acceptable? Is a nice shirt and jeans OK?

Also, do people tip waiters/waitresses, bar-tenders, etc? If so, how much is an average tip?
Is striking up a conversation with a person in a club or bar OK, especially with girls, or is this viewed as too direct or unordinary?

I appreciate any help. I don't want to make a complete fool of myself while I'm in town.

News / Weak US dollar in Poland and other countries... [180]

Joe,
You need to read snopes.com, or even wikipedia, and it's evident that this whole "Amero" thing is a simple urban legend.

The U.S. wouldn't weaken its position by taking on the weaker economies and positions of its two socialist neighbors. Also, the Canadians stand to lose from such an arrangement by taking on the U.S. national debt. And none of these three nations are close enough friends to simply help each other out.

The people of the U.S. and Canada would never except such a thing, as both peoples are proud and willing to defend their sovereignty.

All these conspiracy theorist need to focus all their energy on a real problem. That may yield a result.

Love / First time meeting Polish girl question... [23]

Hi everyone,
I'm sure I'm opening myself up for ridicule, but I have a question.
The other day in Warsaw I met a girl working in a store, and it seemed like we hit it off. We had a lot in common, and talked about things for close to an hour.

Towards the end of our conversation I decided to ask her out. She accepted, and we decided to meet near her work. While I was waiting for her another girl from her store met me and told me she couldn't make it.

This is fine, and I appreciate her having her friend come to inform me of the situation.
What I'm wondering, is whether I should have not asked her out so directly. I'm afraid that I may have put her on the spot, and she just accepted so she didn't hurt my feelings.

I really liked her. I guess its kinda a crush; which is pretty bad at my age.
Here's the decision I'm trying to make: I am thinking about calling her after the holidays, and just telling her that I'm sorry we couldn't meet up, and that maybe we can in the future, etc.

Is this a bad idea? I'm wondering if she would appreciate a gesture like this, or consider it some kinda stalking! It could be taken either way where I'm from.

I appreciate any input you guys may have. I'm assuming that Polish girls are like girls from anywhere else, but I'm certainly not familiar with relationship etiquette.

Thanks.

Love / First time meeting Polish girl question... [23]

"are you thinking of calling her at the store she works at?"

Unfortunately this is the only # I have. I feel asking for her number would have put her on the spot more than asking her out for the evening, since it's easier to make an excuse about the evening than it is to come up with a reason not to give a phone number. That's just my opinion anyway.

I appreciate everyones opinion on this. Most were reassuring. I left Warsaw the next day and haven't had an opportunity to talk since. I figure I'd wait until after the holidays.

I agree with what you guys said about having nothing to lose. But do you all think it would be that bad to contact her at work?

Judging by the fact that it's a small place, and she works her shift alone, I don't think there is a risk of getting her in trouble.

Thanks again,

Bryon

Love / First time meeting Polish girl question... [23]

Southern,

I didn't pressure or burden her at all.
We just talked about different thinks, casually, for about an hour. I think we both felt comfortable, because the conversation was so easy and relaxed.

Only when I had to go did I mention meeting later. I only mentioned this once, and also told her if she had plans not to worry about it.

There was no pressure at all.

Love / First time meeting Polish girl question... [23]

I though about the sex appeal for sales thing also, but I made a purchase from her in the first few minutes. The rest of the conversation just kinda happened. That's what has me thinking about her now.

I haven't connected conversationally with a girl like that in years.

Love / First time meeting Polish girl question... [23]

The Christmas card idea is something I'll have to keep in mind for next time!

Wyspainska, I did have her friend call her mobile right then, but she didn't answer. You're correct, in hindsight I should have just asked for her number, but since I didn't I may just call her at work. As others have mentioned, I don't have much too lose.

USA, Canada / Trouble sending emails from U.S. to Poland... [6]

I'm having trouble sending emails from the U.S. to a friend in Warsaw, and she is having problems sending emails to me.
We've spoke on the phone and the addresses seem to be correct, so I don't know what else could be causing this. She has a googlemail.com address, and I have a gmail address.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?
I appreciate any help.

USA, Canada / Question about calling Poland from the U.S. [4]

I'm having problems calling a number in the Warsaw area from the U.S. I'm hoping that I have the right number.
I'm calling from my mobile, which is international and works worldwide, and I'm dialing 011-48-510-077-***. I keep getting a message saying the number is not recognized.

Does anyone have any ideas? Am I dialing it wrong or do I have a wrong number?
Thanks,
Bryon

Genealogy / How can I find a phone listing of a friend from Warsaw? [11]

Hi,

I have a friend in Warsaw, but can't find the phone number anywhere. I think I lost it while traveling over the holidays. Is there a way that I can use my friends name to get a number? An email address will work too. I don't want to lose touch.

Is there a Warsaw phone directory on the web? I'm not going back to Warsaw until the fall, and that's a long time to not talk to someone.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Work / Wage question, technical field (Warsaw area)... [13]

Hi,

I know this is a pretty broad subject, but I think any input will help.
I'm wondering what a fair, or even above average wage would be for an expat working in Warsaw or the surrounding area, when employed in a technical field, such as aviation maintenance.

I'm interested in a helicopter mechanic job in the area, but don't know what to expect or ask for in a wage.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Genealogy / Fabiszewski [5]

Hi,

I looked into this a while ago with little result, but I figured I'd try again.
I'm trying to determine where my great-grandparents came from, and was wondering if my last name, Fabiszewski, may give a clue to where in Poland my family is from.

I have little documentation from my family, other than a 1920 census from Pittsburgh that says my great-grandfather arrived in the U.S. around 1900.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Work / Wage question, technical field (Warsaw area)... [13]

Thanks.
Is 3000 to 5000zl enough to live decently in the area. I've only spent a week in Warsaw, and I'm not familiar with the actual cost of living, such as rent, food, etc.

I don't want to move there and struggle to get by.

What makes you think you should earn twice the average local salary, when you can't even speak the language, and are probably doing a job a Pole could do just as well?

Well, Polski_zyd, if there was a large number of Poles with my experience on western built aircraft I guess Polish companies wouldn't need to hire western techs.

I didn't post this thread to argue with you, but rather to ask a legitimate question.

Genealogy / Kochan and Mokowo, Poland [14]

Hi,

Has anyone every heard of Kochan, Poland.
I'm trying to locate the origins of my family, and found this location listed on U.S. immigration papers for a relative in the 1920's.

I can't find anything on google.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Konin and Fabiszewski

Hi,

I've been trying to find my family origin, and found some documents that point to Konin, Poland as my family's home town.
Where can I find more info on my last name, Fabiszewski, and its association with the city of Konin?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Kohan, Russia, Poland???

I've posted on here before in regards to my family history, and everyone has been very helpful. I've found some info which I think is leading me in the right direction, and am hoping someone can clarify this for me.

I now have some citizenship papers for my grandfathers brother. The paper states that he was born in Kohan, Russia, Poland. It states that he must not remain loyal to the Republic of Poland. These papers are from around 1920.

Does anyone known where this area may be?
I have been trying for a long time to determine where in Poland my family is from, and think this may be the only solid lead I will find.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the info. I did a little reading on the towns you mentioned. I just need to find a way to find out if one of these places is where my family is from.

Btw, is the name Fabiszewski fairly common? I came across it a few times while looking into this.

Mokowo or Kochon village info

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I visited the forum here, and I think I've made significant progress on finding my family origins. I still need some help though.

I know nothing about my great-grandparents, who immigrated to the U.S. about 100 years ago, but recently I was able to find where they are buried, as well as a ship passenger list that contains my great-grandmothers and some of her childrens names.

Her name was Pelagia Fabiszewska and the list states she came from Mokowo Poland.
I have also found a document from one of her children stating he (his name was Stanislaw) was from Kochon.
According to a 1920 census, as well as the church where he is buried, my great-grandfather's name was Alexander Fabiszewski, though he may have also been known as Marien.

I've learned this so far: Mokowo and Kochon are both small villages located in the municipality of Gmina Dobrzyn nad Wisla, which is located in Lipno County, in the voivodeship (state) of Kuyavian-Pomeranian, in north-central Poland.

I am thrilled I've been able to find the names of these villages, as I've been trying to find this information for several years. My question is, where do I go from here???

I really want to find some info within these towns to solidify that the info I have is correct. Can anyone help me contact the local government of church to try to find some record of my family? I checked out some local websites but they are in Polish, so I couldn't read them.

Any help would be great! I'm visiting Krakow in a week, and if I can be sure my family came from Mokowo of Kochon I would like to visit these towns while I'm there.

Thanks in advance for any help.
